Students flooded the corridors, their conversations filled with excitement over the upcoming Founder's Ball.
Olivia smiled as she listened to the chatter.
For the first time since arriving at the academy, she actually found herself looking forward to something.
"Miss Olivia."
She turned.
Standing at the end of the hallway was Professor Kael.
His hands were folded behind his back, his expression as unreadable as ever.
"I need a word."
The smile on Olivia's face faded.
"...Yes, Professor."
Kael led her through the academy until they reached the highest training tower.
Unlike the other training rooms, this one was empty.
The stone floor was scarred with burn marks, cracks and deep sword cuts left by generations of students.
The heavy doors shut behind them.
For several seconds, Kael said nothing.
He simply stared out of the enormous window overlooking the academy.
Finally...
"You failed."
Olivia lowered her head.
"...I know."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"You don't."
She looked up.
"You think you failed because you couldn't control your fire."
He slowly turned toward her.
"You failed because you hesitated."
His sharp eyes seemed to see straight through her.
"You fear your own power."
Olivia swallowed.
"I... I don't want to hurt anyone."
"And yet..."
Kael stepped closer.
"One day, you will."
Her heart stopped.
"What?"
"If you continue fearing your abilities..."
"...they will control you."
Silence.
"You've seen what happens when you panic."
She nodded.
"My fire..."
"Is unpredictable."
"No."
Kael shook his head.
"You are unpredictable."
"The fire simply follows your heart."
Those words struck her harder than any criticism ever had.
Kael walked toward the center of the room.
"There isn't much time."
"What do you mean?"
"I've decided."
He folded his arms.
"Beginning tomorrow..."
"...you will train with me."
Olivia blinked.
"Personally?"
"Every morning before classes."
"Every evening after classes."
"Every weekend."
Her eyes widened.
"That's..."
"...a lot."
"It isn't enough."
Kael's tone never changed.
"You must master your abilities faster than any student before you."
She looked confused.
"Why me?"
He didn't answer.
Instead...
He said something that made her heart sink.
"You will not be attending the Founder's Ball."
Silence.
Olivia stared at him.
"...What?"
"The evening of the ball will be another training session."
She couldn't believe what she had heard.
"But..."
"The ball..."
"My classmates..."
"I've never..."
Her voice trembled.
"I wanted to go."
"I know."
"No..."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
Tears welled in her eyes.
"For everyone else, it's just a dance."
"But for me..."
"It would've been the first time I actually felt like I belonged here."
Kael remained silent.
She looked away, trying desperately not to cry.
Outside the window, she could already see students laughing together as they planned the biggest night of the semester.
She had imagined herself wearing a beautiful dress.
Dancing.
Laughing with Becca.
Maybe even convincing Owen to attend.
Now...
It was gone.
All of it.
Professor Kael watched her quietly.
Then he spoke.
"If attending the ball means more to you than controlling your abilities..."
"...then you are not ready to wield them."
Olivia closed her eyes.
"No..."
She whispered.
"They mean everything to me."
Another silence settled over the room.
Then...
An idea formed in her mind.
She slowly looked back at him.
"What if..."
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"...we make a deal?"
His expression didn't change.
"I'm listening."
Olivia took a deep breath.
"You said I need to master my abilities."
"I do."
"If..."
She hesitated.
"If I can prove to you that I've learned to control my fire before the night of the ball..."
"...then you'll let me go."
Kael stared at her.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Then...
A faint smile—so subtle it was almost impossible to notice—touched the corner of his lips.
"A bargain."
He walked toward the window again.
"You have four days."
Olivia's heart raced.
"If, by the evening of the Founder's Ball, you can demonstrate complete control over your flames..."
"...you will have my permission to attend."
Hope flickered inside her.
"But..."
Kael's voice became firm once more.
"If you fail..."
"There will be no arguments."
"No second chances."
"You will remain here."
"And you will train."
Olivia straightened her shoulders.
For the first time since entering the tower, determination replaced disappointment.
"I accept."
Kael nodded once.
"Good."
He extended his hand toward the center of the room.
A small training torch ignited with a single blue flame.
"Then your first lesson begins now."
Olivia stared at the tiny flame.
She had just made the biggest gamble of her life.
She had four days...
To conquer the one thing she feared most:
Herself!
