CHAPTER NINETEEN _ THE CONFRONTATION

717 Words
The academy courtyard buzzed with excitement. ‎Students huddled in groups, gossiping about the upcoming Winter Ball. Invitations were already being exchanged, laughter echoed through the stone walkways, and every conversation seemed to end with the same question. ‎"Who are you going with?" ‎Olivia sat beneath the large maple tree, quietly reading while Becca and Liam argued over which decorations the Student Council would choose. ‎Then... ‎The chatter around them suddenly died. ‎Click... ‎Click... ‎Click... ‎The sharp sound of heels striking the pavement drew everyone's attention. ‎Mia. ‎Dressed flawlessly even in her academy uniform, she walked through the crowd with the confidence of a queen. Several students instinctively stepped aside to let her pass. ‎She stopped directly in front of Olivia. ‎Olivia slowly looked up from her book. ‎"...Can I help you?" ‎Mia folded her arms. ‎"I've been looking for you." ‎Liam immediately stood. ‎"What do you want, Mia?" ‎She ignored him. ‎Her icy blue eyes never left Olivia. ‎"So..." Mia said with a fake smile. "You're enjoying all the attention?" ‎Olivia frowned. ‎"I don't know what you're talking about." ‎"Oh, really?" ‎Mia took another step closer. ‎"Funny." ‎She leaned in just enough for only Olivia to hear. ‎"First Asher can't stop staring at you during training..." ‎"...and now people are whispering that Omar defended you." ‎Olivia blinked. ‎"Omar?" ‎"I don't need you pretending." ‎"I wasn't pretending." ‎Mia laughed softly. ‎"You know what I hate the most?" ‎She looked Olivia up and down. ‎"Girls who act innocent." ‎Becca finally stepped between them. ‎"That's enough." ‎Mia looked at her. ‎"Stay out of this, Becca." ‎"No." ‎Becca's voice remained calm. ‎"Olivia hasn't done anything to you." ‎Mia smiled again. ‎"Not yet." ‎She turned back toward Olivia. ‎"Listen carefully." ‎Her smile disappeared. ‎"If you think you're going to steal what belongs to me..." ‎"...you're making the biggest mistake of your life." ‎Silence. ‎Students watched from every direction. ‎No one dared interrupt. ‎Olivia slowly stood to meet Mia's eyes. ‎"I don't want Asher." ‎Mia scoffed. ‎"Maybe not." ‎Her gaze hardened. ‎"But he wants you." ‎Those words hit harder than Olivia expected. ‎She hadn't noticed. ‎Or perhaps... ‎She hadn't wanted to. ‎Mia stepped closer until they were almost face to face. ‎"So here's some advice." ‎"Stay away from Asher." ‎"Stay away from Omar." ‎"And stay out of my spotlight." ‎She brushed past Olivia's shoulder as she walked away. ‎The crowd slowly began moving again, whispering louder than before. ‎Liam clenched his fists. ‎"I swear, one day she's going too far." ‎Becca sighed. ‎"She already has." ‎Olivia remained silent, watching Mia disappear into the crowd. ‎She wasn't thinking about the threat. ‎She was thinking about one sentence. ‎"But he wants you." ‎Across the courtyard, hidden behind the second-floor balcony, Asher had witnessed the entire confrontation. ‎His jaw tightened. ‎For the first time... ‎He realized his feelings for Olivia were no longer something he could hide. ‎ ‎Liam sat quietly beneath a tree, staring into the distance. ‎Becca walked over and sat beside him. ‎"You've been thinking about Olivia again, haven't you?" ‎Liam smiled weakly. ‎"Is it really that obvious?" ‎"Very." ‎He sighed. ‎"I care about her... more than she knows." ‎"Then tell her." ‎Liam shook his head. ‎"I can't." ‎"Why?" ‎"I'm scared." ‎"Scared of what?" ‎"That she'll reject me... and things will never be the same between us." ‎Becca was silent for a moment before smiling. ‎"Then ask her to the Founder's Ball." ‎Liam looked at her in disbelief. ‎"Are you trying to get me killed?" ‎Becca laughed. ‎"I'm trying to stop you from wondering 'what if' for the rest of your life." ‎Liam looked toward the academy building where Olivia had disappeared. ‎"...I'll think about it." ‎
