-Flash back-
July 28th, 1928
I could barely contain my excitement as my parents took me out to the woods to shift for the first time. It was a full moon out and the legend of a powerful werewolf shifting under it would gain special powers was about to be proven right or wrong. I was hoping it was true. My parents thought I had gone nuts when I told them about it. I was more excited about that than the fact I could find my mate tonight.
Shifting was painful and long. It took me a total of three hours to finally shift completely. Chief was the biggest wolf I’ve ever seen. He was about five inches taller than my father’s wolf and was over a head taller than my mother’s. He was pitch black and had a white diamond on his chest. He was magnificent.
For hours my parents and I ran. We had so much fun. We came across a small cave and decided to take shelter for the night. We would return to the packhouse in the morning. Once we shifted back, we untied our clothes from our ankles and made a fire for the night. I was exhausted and collapsed almost the second I laid my head on the ground.
I woke up with the most awful sound imaginable ringing in my ears. My mother screams as a large group of rogues invade the cave. The three of us stood together facing the group. Soon fighting erupted. We were outmatched. I was fighting two of them, when one started coming at me with a silver knife. I raise my hands to protect myself, waiting for the feeling of pain to hit me, but it never came. I opened my eyes to see the tip of the blade centimeters from my face, stabbed into a wall of dirt. Everyone stopped what they were doing to look at me.
I look down at my hands as I realise I just did that. I controlled the Earth. I look up at my parents just in time to see them both stabbed from behind with silver blades. I fell to my knees and in my absolute anger, the earth came up and swallowed every last rogue that was in that cave. I stayed with my parents, crying for hours with the pain of losing them and the fear of what I had just done.
Our pack warriors soon found me, I didn’t tell them what I did. I was scared that if I told them they would blame me. So I hid my power. I came home that night, Alpha of the Silver moon pack.
-End of Flashback-
The Princess and Prince took their time to tell me that Princess Isabella had shifted for the first time on her 18th birthday. After the death of her mate, Ryker, she had released her anger and caused a devastating storm. Her own storm had caused a lighting bolt to go through her body and therefore knock her out. The doctors took her in and said she was absolutely fine, nothing was wrong with her. She didn't even appear to have a scratch on her, let alone look like she had been hit by lightning.
No one knew the cause of her coma. I couldn’t imagine what the girl was going through. By losing her mate that night she lost a major part of herself. I'm sure eventually she will find her second chance mate. It was very common for wolves to find a second mate. I’ve been to a few parties to know it to be true. In fact, my parents were each other’s second chance mates. Their first mates had rejected them, and then they found each other. All it took was a look into each other’s eyes.
When you look into each other’s eyes, a flash of silver could be seen in their eyes. It was their bodies way of recognizing the bond they shared for each other. The other person would make them stronger as they mark each other. A bond was sacred, and each one was chosen by the Goddess herself. I always have wanted that bond, but I’ve never been blessed with one.
After telling me the whole story, they excuse themselves to get ready and depart to another pack not too far from our southern border. I meet them at the doors before they leave.
“Your Majesties” I bow my head to them.”I hope you have a safe journey to the rest of the packs”
“Thank you for your hospitality Alpha Xander. Please be at the Palace in two days. There will be tents outside of the palace walls to accommodate any warriors that come and join the fight. If you have any questions, feel free to call any of us.” The Princess adds before they all shift into their wolves and take off.
The next two days pass in a blur as I prepare the pack for my departure. Kyle is going with me as well as 50 of our strongest pack warriors. The rest will stay to keep watch over our lands in their absence. Kyle’s parents were the beta’s of my parents, so I made the decision for them to be in charge while I’m absent. I would try to get a hold of them every night for any updates though.
So we are all driving towards the palace to help put an end to this war. I know it will be quick as rogues really are not much of a fight. But it still had to happen. Rogues are wolves that have been banished from their home pack for doing something awful. I say it is a worse fate than death. But if they are growing into an army, we have no choice but to deal with them.
Soon we reach the palace walls where our drivers are escorted to the large white tents scattered across the grounds. One tent in the middle was red. It was clear to me that it was a commander's tent. In the middle of everyone else’s in order to protect the one in charge. Once we are unloaded, my fifty men separate into groups of ten and are placed in the tents around me. The campsite was already filled with werewolves, but I could tell there were still plenty of tents that needed to be filled.
Kyle and I start making ourselves comfortable in the red tent when a messenger comes in to inform us our presence was requested by the King and Queen. We follow the messenger into the palace and onto the second floor. To say this place was huge was an understatement. Once we arrived into the throne room, two people sat on the thrones. You could feel the power coming off of them in waves as if it were trying to say, ‘Behave or we will kill you’. Their aura’s are definitely strong.
We knelt in front of them and bared our necks instantly in submission. This was to show that we knew they were in charge. As an alpha it was hard to admit that there was someone above you, but we didn’t have a choice unless we wanted a death wish.
Queen Brook was radiant. She had the skin tone of a perfect tan. Her hair was tied up in elaborate braids that held her crown up. Her bright green eyes matched her dark brown hair perfectly. She was beautiful for sure. I know one thing though… Beauty was power.
King Roland had dirty blond hair that curled slightly underneath his crown. He sat up tall as his square shoulders and chiseled jaw showed no weakness even as his daughter laid in the building next door in a coma. He was strong and you could tell he didn’t let his emotions cloud his judgement. His large brown eyes stared down at me approvingly.
Soon he motioned us to stand, we obliged and stood there awaiting our orders. Without a word he got up from his throne and stood in front of me. I gulped nervously and watched him carefully. Slowly he stuck his out in front of him and held it out to me. I take an internal sigh and shake his hand gladly,
“Thank you for coming as soon as you could Alpha Xander. I can’t thank you enough for your service to me and to our people. I hope that this war will end soon and we can all move on with our lives. I was told you asked to know the whole story and you now know what has happened to our daughter.” He said this with a sad look in his eyes.
“Yes, your majesty. Both myself and my Beta Kyle know what happened. And I’ve come up with a few conclusions while we were on the way here. I believe that the rogues must have known about your daughter’s powers.” I say with certainty. When I say it out loud it makes me believe it more myself.
“Yes I believe you’re right. We have no idea who is in charge of the attacks though. Luckily none of the attacks have been fatal for us. And every time we capture one to take it to be interviewed, they kill themselves before we get the chance.” He sighs and I can tell he is starting to get frustrated and restless. With him standing so close, I can tell he isn’t getting much sleep at all. Same with the Queen. They are doing all they can, but can’t get the results as fast as they would like.
“Tonight we invite you both to dinner in our part of the palace. We want to personally thank you for coming. This means a lot to us. For now, go and get settled in your private tent. We will send an omega to get you in about an hour. You will take a tour around the palace and the grounds. Then we will serve you dinner.” We bow our heads in understanding before he take the Queen's hand and he escorts her out of the throne room.
When we turn to leave, I hear Kyle say through the mind link, “Wow. They will serve us? That is a great honor. They must really be in a tough spot right now”
I knew he was right. The King and Queen were separated from both of their daughters right now. Their eldest was off recruiting men personally, while their youngest was sitting in a hospital room. I had to hand it to them though, they were holding it together a whole lot better then what I could do.
We head back to our tent and unpack our belongings. Soon though we are being whisked through on our tour. We hit the training building first, we see that there is training in session and we don’t stay for very long. We then cross over to the hospital where staff is setting up a tent outside as a precaution with incoming battles. We step inside and the typical smell of hospitals fills my nostrils. I've been in hospitals plenty of times, but the smell still makes me queasy. We walk around for a bit as the omega explains where we can find everything.
“Where is the Princess being kept?” I ask suddenly. I surprised myself by even asking it. I don’t know where the thought even came from. I had a good feeling that Chief had something to do with it. Ever since we had that weird sense of pain in our chest, he has been quiet. He says some things to me every once in a while, but I haven’t heard from him in the past couple of days.
I could tell I put the omega in a tough spot. Of course he didn’t know where she was. I waved off the question quickly and we kept walking. Soon we reach the end of our tour and arrive on the top floor of the castle. I have to hand it to them, they sure do have a little bit of everything in this palace. We knock on their door and wait for the King and Queen to answer. Once the door opens, they usher us inside.
“Your Majesties, thank you for inviting us. It is a great pleasure to be here in your home.” I say once they close the doors behind us.
“Please, Roland and Brook will be just fine” the king says as a matter of fact. I’m slightly shocked and when I look over at Kyle, he is equally shocked. To greet the king and queen without formalities is rare. Seeing our shocked faces, the king quickly adds, “We knew both of your parents. We knew them very well and they always called us by our first names, so it only seems fitting that you do as well.”
I nod in understanding although I had no clue my parents knew the queen and king on a first name basis.
“Maybe it was before our time.” Chief speaks to me
“Well look who decided to finally join the party!” I grumble back to him
“Well something has been off with us and I’m trying to figure out what” he says quietly.
Once I know he isn’t going to say anything more, Kyle and I sit down with Brook and Roland and strike up a nice conversation. With beers in each of our hands we all relax. Soon dinner is ready and we each grab a plate. I look down at the plate before me and smile to myself. Chicken alfredo was the dinner tonight. It just so happened to be my favorite.
“Is there something wrong dear?” Brook asks me.
“Oh no of course not. This is just my favorite dish. My mom used to make it. It was the last thing we ate together before they passed. I haven’t had it in years.” I laugh. She smiles before taking a bite. When I take a bite I involuntarily moan as flavor erupts in my mouth. This was the best alfredo I’ve had in my life.
Laughing erupts from the others. I join them after I swallow my first bite. Brook laughs so hard she ends up crying and Roland isn’t far behind. “It is our daughter Isabella’s recipe. It is her favorite dish as well. She would say that it always brought the best out of people” Brook says happily.
I smile at the thought of that. Once we are finished we have the most amazing dessert called blueberry tea cake, which I came to find out is also one of Isabella’s recipes. This girl definitely knew how to cook. We find ourselves sitting on the balcony when I soon have to pee.
“Your Majes…. I mean Brook. Where is the bathroom?” I ask her.
“Down the hall, second door on the left.” She tells me while pointing to the hall. I thank her before rushing off to it. After I realize myself, I notice the door across the hall was opened a crack. Of course my curiosity gets the better of me, and I take a small peak. I could tell it was one of their daughter’s rooms. I took a deep breath in and caught one of the most amazing smells. It was very faint and I could hardly make out strawberries and champagne.I couldn’t help but notice my wolf stirring a little at the smell. I push the thought out of my mind quickly and return back. I find myself soon thinking about those eyes I had in my dream. Something was off and I just couldn’t place my finger on it.
I’m on my fourth beer when I hear the sounds of a horn. It was a battle horn. There was no mistaking that.
“Well boys, it's time to get to work.” Roland stands up and we all follow him downstairs towards the battle.
