Chapter 9.5
The crystal shattered.
Glass scattered across the Spell Hall.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Everybody was staring at me.
Again.
I folded my arms.
"Stop staring."
Nobody stopped.
I sighed.
"This kingdom has a serious staring problem."
"Don't move!" Zoland suddenly shouted.
I blinked.
Then casually walked past him.
"Okay."
"Zilla!"
"What?"
I bent down and picked up a book from the floor.
The moment my fingers touched it, the book shot into the air.
"OH MY CHRIST!"
The book started flying around the hall.
Students ducked.
Teachers jumped aside.
The book smacked one unfortunate boy on the forehead before continuing its journey.
"What is wrong with this place?!"
---
A student suddenly stood up.
His hair was blue.
His eyes were blue.
Even his uniform had blue flames dancing around it.
He looked excited.
Too excited.
"Can we test her?"
The room immediately became silent.
A girl nearby gasped.
"Are you insane?"
"What?" he asked.
"I want to see what happens."
The girl's face turned pale.
"The last person who tested an unknown bloodline disappeared for three days."
The boy shrugged.
"That's not my problem."
---
I pointed at him.
"I don't trust him."
"Nobody asked."
"Good."
---
The blue-haired boy stepped forward.
A bright flame ignited above his hand.
Blue.
Pure blue.
The temperature in the room instantly rose.
Students backed away.
Teachers looked nervous.
Even Zoland looked annoyed.
"Sit down."
The boy ignored him.
---
"Let's see what happens."
The flame exploded forward.
Straight at me.
Fast.
Hot.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
---
I screamed.
"WHY IS EVERYBODY TRYING TO KILL ME?!"
---
The blue fire reached me.
Then something happened.
Something nobody expected.
Not even me.
---
A pulse burst from my body.
Invisible.
Silent.
Powerful.
The air itself distorted.
The flames bent.
Literally bent.
Like they had crashed into an invisible wall.
The fire curved around me.
Spinning.
Twisting.
Flowing past my body.
Not a single spark touched my skin.
---
The entire hall froze.
The boy froze.
The teachers froze.
Even the floating books stopped moving.
---
"What?"
I looked around.
"What happened?"
---
The boy frowned.
Then threw even more fire.
A massive wave.
Large enough to burn down several buildings.
The flames rushed toward me.
The invisible force appeared again.
The fire bent.
Twisted.
Split apart.
And scattered harmlessly throughout the room.
---
The students started shouting.
"Did you see that?!"
"Impossible!"
"That's not a shield!"
"What is that?!"
---
Then three more students joined.
Different elements.
Fire.
Wind.
Lightning.
All at once.
---
The attacks collided with the strange force around me.
The energy twisted.
Compressed.
Folded.
Then exploded outward.
The backlash knocked students off their feet.
Several instructors crashed into walls.
One teacher lost his wig.
---
I stared.
The room stared back.
Again.
---
"Why are we fighting?"
I asked.
Nobody answered.
---
Finally Zoland stepped forward.
"Enough."
His voice echoed through the hall.
Immediately everyone stopped.
---
The strange energy faded.
The room slowly returned to normal.
Except for the fact that everyone looked traumatized.
---
I dusted my dress.
"Can somebody explain what just happened?"
A girl slowly raised her hand.
"Normal barriers stop attacks."
"The Sixth Family doesn't stop attacks."
"They redirect them."
"Think of the world. Think of Earth."
"When the Sun releases solar storms, Earth's magnetic field bends the energy away."
"Your Energy Field does the same thing."
"The stronger the attack becomes, the more the field twists and redirects it."
"Wonderful."
"Can Earth's magnetic field pay my rent?
The entire hall groaned.
---
A few minutes later, Zoland returned carrying a mountain of books.
A literal mountain.
He dropped them in front of me.
BOOM.
The table shook.
---
"Read."
I stared.
He stared.
I stared harder.
He stared harder.
---
Finally, I picked up one of the books.
Then threw it directly at him.
THUD.
---
"Will that pay my rent?"
"No."
"Then I don't want it."
---
Zoland rubbed his forehead.
"I've never met anyone like you."
"That's because I'm special."
"That's not what I meant."
---
Eventually I carried the books outside.
The kitchen staff handed me coffee.
Fresh bread.
Eggs.
My favorite breakfast.
Finally.
Civilization.
---
I made my way toward my favorite place.
A giant tree overlooking the estate.
Far away from the castle.
Far away from the weird people.
Far away from the magic.
---
I sat down.
Opened the first book.
Read one sentence.
Closed it.
Opened it again.
Read another sentence.
---
"These books still won't pay my rent."
---
Meanwhile...
Inside the castle...
Zoland stood before the First Master.
The Second Master.
And the Third Master.
A magical screen floated before them.
Displaying everything that had happened.
Every second.
Every attack.
Every reaction.
---
Silence filled the room.
For once...
Nobody spoke.
---
The Third Master's mouth was slightly open.
The Second Master looked shocked.
Completely shocked.
---
And the First Master...
The First Master simply stared.
His eyes fixed on the image of Zilla.
The coffee.
The books.
The giant tree.
The invisible power.
---
Finally he spoke.
One sentence.
One sentence that made the room colder.
---
"It really is her."
Silence followed.
Nobody dared ask what he meant.
Because for the first time in ten thousand years...
The impossible had happened.
And all of them had witnessed it.
