More than Business

The soft hum of the TV filled the dimly lit apartment. The credits rolled as Angela stretched her arms above her head, letting out a sleepy yawn. Laura was sprawled across the couch with a bowl of popcorn half-empty on her stomach, and Boston sat with a cushion tucked behind his head, eyes closed but not asleep. Angela (smiling): "Okay, I don’t know about you two, but I’m calling it a night." Laura: "Same here. I’m not even going to bother moving. I’m crashing here." Boston (opening his eyes): "I second that. My place is too far, and I’m too full of pizza to move." Angela chuckled as she gathered the empty plates from the center table. Angela: "You guys are hopeless. But fine. There are extra pillows in the closet, and a spare blanket in the hallway drawer." As Angela headed to the kitchen, Laura followed her with a knowing look. Laura (teasing): "So… are you going to talk about what happened earlier?" Angela (pretending not to know): "What happened earlier?" Laura (grinning): "You and Boston. The way he looks at you? Girl, it’s practically glowing off his face." Angela set the dishes in the sink and leaned against the counter. Angela (softly): "I know. He hasn’t said anything, but I feel it. I just don’t know what to do." Laura (serious now): "You care about him, don’t you?" Angela: "I do. He’s been in my life for so long. But I don’t know if it’s that kind of care. I’m confused." Laura: "Then don’t force it. Let things happen naturally. But whatever you do, be honest with him — and yourself." They shared a quiet look before heading back to the living room. Boston had already claimed the couch. Boston (playfully): "I’m assuming this means I get the couch? Thanks for your sacrifice, Laura." Laura (snorting): "Please. I’d rather take Angela’s comfy rug over your snoring." Everyone laughed. – The blaring of her alarm was the first thing Angela registered. Then the time. 7:42 AM. Her eyes flew open. “s**t!” she yelped, throwing the blanket off her as she scrambled up. Laura groaned from beside her, pulling a pillow over her face. Boston was still knocked out on the couch, snoring softly. Angela dashed into the bathroom, brushing her teeth with one hand and texting Laura with the other. Angela:You didn’t wake me up! I’m supposed to be at the office in 18 minutes!! “Why didn’t you wake me up?!” she yelled through the door. Laura’s muffled voice came back, “I thought you set your alarm!” “I did!!” Angela came out in a panic, half-dressed, hair still a mess. “Ughh I can’t be late. Not today!” Fifteen chaotic minutes later, she rushed out the door, her heels in one hand, phone in the other. — By 8:22 AM, she stumbled into Argent Corp, out of breath. “Miss Angela,” the front desk assistant looked up, surprised. “You look... lively today.” Angela forced a smile. “Fashionably late.” She tried not to panic as she rode the elevator up.then she whispered to herself “He’s probably in a meeting. I’ll just sneak in and pretend I was here all along...” But the moment she stepped out on the executive floor, her heels clicking against the polished tiles, the door to Kevin Argent’s office opened. And there he was. Immaculate as ever. Sharp grey suit, crisp white shirt, no tie today. His gaze lifted slowly from the tablet in his hand. Kevin’s POV – The click of her heels had been the first sound to pull him out of his focus that morning. He hadn’t even looked up at first—he didn’t need to. Her energy was unmistakable. A bit chaotic. Always too honest. Too... warm for his world. When she stammered out her apology, flustered and wide-eyed, he had almost smiled. Almost. Instead, he gave her the cool, measured response he was known for. But now, sitting at his desk, the numbers on the screen blurred. He glanced toward the glass wall separating his office from her desk. She was sorting papers, bottom lip between her teeth in concentration. Every few seconds, she would push her hair out of her face or mutter something to herself. She had no idea he was watching her. And he hated how often he did that. Angela Martins was just another intern. A temporary placement in his structured world. She was supposed to file, organize, observe. Not stir something under his skin with her careless smiles or the way she crinkled her nose when she didn’t understand a report. He leaned back, trying to refocus. His phone buzzed—a text from his mother. “Dinner this weekend. Don’t say no. Your sister will be there.” He sighed. Family dinners meant questions. Why he was still single. Why he looked tired. Why he hadn’t come home in months. then he got an idea in order for him to avoid questions from his family. He replied with a simple: “Fine. Saturday.” Then his eyes returned to the desk outside. Angela bent to grab something off the floor. She popped up again, brushing dust from her skirt. His jaw clenched. He ran a hand through his hair. “She’s distracting. That’s all this is.” He tapped the telecom button. “Miss Martins.” “Yes, sir?” Her voice came through, light and breathy. “Step into my office.” He didn’t trust himself to watch her anymore—not from behind glass. He needed her right where he could see her. Up close. And under control. Kevin’s office door opened just as Angela’s soft footsteps approached. She looked up, a little startled, but managed a polite smile. “Miss Martins,” Kevin said, gesturing to the chair opposite his desk. “Please, sit.” Angela settled down, clutching her folder nervously. He folded his hands on the desk, watching her carefully. “I’ve noticed how you’ve been working late, staying past hours to finish the files. That dedication is... commendable.” Angela blinked. “Thank you, sir. I just want to make sure everything is perfect.” Kevin gave a small nod. “Good. Because I’m going to need that level of commitment from you. This internship is more than just filing papers. It’s about understanding the core of this company.” She leaned forward, interest piqued. “I’m ready to learn.” He studied her for a moment, then glanced at the documents on his desk. “There’s a business trip next week. I want you to come along. It’ll be a chance to see how things work beyond the office.” Angela’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really? I’d love that.” Kevin’s lips twitched in a rare, almost-smile. “Good. It’ll be a test. To see if you’re cut out for this.” She nodded eagerly. But little did she know that it was more than just a business trip As she stood to leave, he added, “ Oh,And Miss Martins?” She paused at the door. “Keep up the good work. But remember, this world isn’t always kind to the unprepared.” Angela smiled, heart pounding as she left. Kevin watched her go, feeling a strange tug he wasn’t ready to name.
