— 5 — Chapter One
Iris
Let me tell you the two rules I had made for myself, and then let me tell you exactly how
quickly I broke both of them.
Rule one: never fall in love with the objects. I had been a provenance researcher for six
years, which meant I had handled things — authenticated, catalogued, traced, documented
things — worth more than I would earn in several lifetimes. A Flemish altarpiece that had
survived two wars and a fire. A Tang dynasty horse that had traveled from Xi'an to a storage
unit in New Jersey without anyone knowing what it was. A Degas pastel that had been in the
same family for four generations and came to me with such a clear, unbroken chain of
ownership that authenticating it was almost simple. You do not last in this work if you fall in
love with the objects. You hold them carefully and you know them completely and you let
them go.
Rule two: never, under any circumstances, fall in love with the collectors. The people
who acquired beautiful things — who wanted them, specifically, who had that quality of
focused acquisitive desire — turned it on people too. Everyone in my field knew this. We
talked about it the way doctors talked about patients: professionally, with appropriate
boundaries, with the understanding that a boundary was a boundary precisely because crossing
it was both possible and consequential.
I had maintained both rules for six years.
I broke the second one within four hours of meeting Cassian Varro, though I would not
have admitted that to myself for another three weeks.
The auction was a Thursday evening event — the kind the house ran four times a year,
mid-tier collection dispersal, nothing exceptional on the walls but enough of interest to draw
the serious buyers and the people who wanted to be seen near serious buyers. I was working,
which I usually was at these events. My job did not end when the authentication report was
— 6 — filed; I was expected to be present, to answer questions from the directorship if issues arose, to
observe how the documentation held up under the scrutiny of actual buyers.
I had seen the Severini's documentation six weeks before the event. The acquisition was
clean — legitimate sale from a private European collection, full chain going back to the artist's
estate, no gap years, no missing periods, no complications. It was one of the easier pieces I'd
authenticated that quarter and I had filed the report and moved on.
When I stood in front of it that evening, I understood that the documentation had told me
nothing about what the painting was.
I know how that sounds. I am a provenance researcher; my job is precisely the
documentation, the chain of ownership, the paper history of an object. The aesthetic content of
what I authenticate is not my professional concern.
But I have also been looking at art since I was eight years old, when my father took me
to a gallery in Edinburgh on a wet Saturday and I stood in front of a Lowry and understood,
without being able to say why, that the painting was lonely. I have never been able to fully
separate the professional looking from the other kind. The Severini was about something —
about the feeling of a thing in the process of failure, holding its form while the coherence
dissolved — and I stood in front of it for four minutes because I was working out what it was
saying.
I did not know anyone was watching me do this.
The man who introduced himself as Cassian Varro at ten o'clock was — I registered this
with the same professional attention I gave to objects — someone whose surface gave very
little away. Tall, dark-haired, with the kind of controlled physical bearing that spoke of either
military background or the discipline of someone who had spent a long time learning to
manage how they occupied space. Italian features, though his English was accent-free.
Somewhere in his late thirties. Expensive suit worn with the ease of someone who had never
had to think about whether they could afford it.
He looked at me the way he'd presumably looked at the Severini: with full attention,
completely, taking inventory.
— 7 — I did not find this flattering, precisely. I found it — interesting. It was a quality of
attention I associated with people who saw things as they were rather than as they were
supposed to be, and those people were rare enough that meeting one was worth noting.
'You own the Severini,' I said, because I had done my research and I knew the lot
provenance and I recognised his name from the purchase record.
'Yes,' he said.
'Most people in this room don't know what they're looking at,' I said. Not to flatter him.
Because it was true and I was constitutionally poor at performing opinions I didn't have.
'I know,' he said. And looked at me in a way that made me feel the sentence had a second
referent.
I excused myself and went back to work and spent the rest of the evening being
professionally competent and not thinking about Cassian Varro, which was not the same as
not thinking about him. It was more like thinking about the space he had occupied and the
specific quality of the attention he'd brought to it.
He called the auction house on a Wednesday. Not the director, not acquisitions — me,
specifically, on the internal line that only professional contacts had access to, about the
provenance work on a Modigliani sketch with a documented gap in its ownership history
between 1938 and 1947.
It was a legitimate query. Exactly my specialty. I had no professional reason to decline.
'Ms. Calloway,' he said, when they put him through. His voice over the phone was the
same as in person — low, unhurried, the kind of voice that had decided a long time ago it
didn't need to perform anything.
We discussed the Modigliani for twenty minutes. He knew more than I expected — had
done actual research, not surface preparation, had questions about specific German archival
sources that told me he'd read the relevant scholarship. At the end of the conversation he said,
with no particular change in tone: 'Have dinner with me.'
'I don't date clients,' I said.
— 8 — 'I haven't purchased anything from your house yet.' A slight pause. 'Technically I remain
a prospective client.'
'That's sophistry,' I said.
'Probably.' No apology. 'Thursday. Eight o'clock. Aldara on the Embankment. I'll have a
table.' Another pause. 'I think you'll come.'
He ended the call before I could respond to that, which I found either very confident or
very rude and was unable to fully separate the two.
I spent three days deciding not to go.
On Thursday I put on the green dress — the same one I'd worn to the auction, because it
was the right dress for the occasion and I was not going to pretend I wasn't thinking about
what the occasion was — and went to Aldara at eight o'clock.
He was already there. Standing when I arrived, which I noted as the kind of small
formality that was either genuine or performed and that I would not know which until I knew
him better.
'You came,' he said.
'I came,' I said. 'Don't read too much into it.'
Something moved at the corner of his mouth. 'Of course not.'
We sat down. The evening began.

Chapter Two
Cassian
— 9 — She came in the green dress and sat across from me with the expression of someone who
had thought carefully about being here and decided to be honest about the thinking. I found
this immediately, unreservedly compelling.
Most people I met professionally — and most of my dinners were professional, had been
for a decade — came to the table with an agenda they didn't acknowledge. They were
performing interest, performing consideration, performing the version of themselves they
thought I wanted to encounter. I had become expert at reading the performance and useless at
finding it interesting.
Iris Calloway looked at me across the table and said: 'You were very confident I'd come.'
'Yes.'
'That kind of confidence is either attractive or off-putting.'
'Which, for you?'
She considered. An actual consideration — I could see it, the working-through of an
honest answer rather than the retrieval of a convenient one. 'I haven't decided,' she said. 'Ask
me again at the end of the evening.'
We ordered and talked, and I understood within the first hour that I was in the kind of
trouble that had no clean resolution. She was extraordinary — layered and precise, with a wit
that appeared without preamble and disappeared just as quickly, and a quality of intellectual
engagement that required me to actually think rather than to manage. She disagreed with two
things I said in the first ninety minutes. She was right about one of them and interesting about
the other, and she did not soften either position when I pushed back.
She asked about my work directly, the way people who weren't afraid of the answers
asked questions. Not the careful circling most people did around the specifics of how I had
accumulated what I had — she asked about the collection itself, the logic of it, the vision
behind it. She had clearly done research. She knew about specific acquisitions, about the
Varro Group's arts funding arm, about the foundation.
— 10 — 'The Severini,' she said, somewhere in the second hour. 'When you bought it, what were
you looking for?'
'Not looking for anything specific,' I said. 'I saw it and I understood what it was saying.'
'Which is?'
'That holding something together and it holding together are different things.' I met her
eyes. 'That you can want coherence badly enough to maintain the appearance of it while the
actual thing is already gone.'
She looked at me for a moment with that complete, going-all-the-way-down attention.
'That's a very specific reading.'
'It's the only reading I can find in it.'
'I stood in front of it for four minutes at the auction,' she said. 'Working out the same
thing.'
'I know,' I said. 'I watched you.'
She absorbed that without particular reaction — filed it, added it to whatever she was
building of me. 'How long were you watching?'
'Four minutes.'
'The whole time.'
'Yes.'
'And then you introduced yourself.'
'And then you were done with the painting and I introduced myself.' I paused. 'You
looked like you'd finished what you came to say to it.'
Something shifted in her expression — surprised, I thought, and trying not to show it.
'Most people don't notice when other people are finished,' she said.
'I notice,' I said.
— 11 — We stayed until the restaurant closed around us. Walking out into the November cold,
she stopped on the pavement and looked at me and said: 'Attractive. For the record. The
confidence.'
'Good,' I said.
'Don't be smug about it.'
'I'm not being smug,' I said. 'I'm pleased. Those are different.'
She almost smiled. Not quite. 'Good night, Cassian.'
'Good night, Iris.' I put her in a cab and watched it leave and stood on the pavement for a
moment with the November air cold against my face, and I thought about the shape of the
evening and the shape of what I wanted and the shape of what was possible, and I thought: this
is going to be the most interesting thing I've done in a decade.
I was not wrong. I also was not fully prepared for it, which was unusual enough that it's
worth noting.
