The Shadow Of Fight

1212 Words
The fires of the battlefield had long since burned out, but their scent lingered in the air like the ghost of death itself. Blood, steel, and smoke. Kael Valerian had long grown used to it, yet tonight, as he stood on the hill overlooking the valley below, he felt a deep unease curling in his gut. His fingers tightened around the hilt of his sword. He could still feel the tremors of battle beneath his feet, could still hear the dying screams of those who had stood against him. And yet, the war was far from over. Selene approached him from behind, her steps nearly silent despite the armor she wore. Her dark hair was wild, streaked with blood—some hers, most not. “You’re quiet,” she said, watching him carefully. Kael didn’t look at her. “She was here.” Selene frowned. “Who?” “Lena.” The name tasted like venom on his tongue. He hadn’t seen her, but he had felt her presence. In the way the enemy had moved, in the way they had anticipated his every strike. She had been there, watching. “You’re sure?” Selene asked. Kael exhaled slowly, forcing down the storm of emotions threatening to rise. “I know her.” Selene’s expression darkened. “Then she was scouting for Edric.” His uncle. The man who had stolen his throne. Kael nodded grimly. “She’ll report back. He won’t wait long.” Selene crossed her arms. “Then we don’t wait either.” She was right. War was coming, whether he wanted it or not. And if Kael was going to reclaim his throne, he needed to strike first. The March to Avelorn By sunrise, Kael’s army was already on the move. The battle had taken its toll, but there was no time for rest. Their next destination: Avelorn. Avelorn was one of the empire’s strongest cities, a fortress of stone and steel. If they took it, they would gain not only resources but also a powerful message—Kael Valerian was no longer a fugitive prince. He was a conqueror. Selene rode beside him, her warriors keeping pace with his men. “Do you think they’ll surrender?” Kael almost laughed. “They won’t.” The governor of Avelorn was a loyalist to Edric. He would rather burn the city to the ground than let it fall into Kael’s hands. Selene smirked. “Good. I prefer a fight.” Kael glanced at her. There was something dangerous in the way she spoke—something almost hungry for war. He had seen it in her before, in the way she fought, in the way she led her warriors into battle without hesitation. Her people followed her not because of duty, but because they believed in vengeance. And vengeance was a powerful force. But he had to be careful. Their goals aligned for now, but if the day ever came when they didn’t… Selene would not hesitate to turn her sword on him. Kael pushed the thought aside. That was a problem for another day. For now, they had a city to take. Avelorn: The City of Stone By nightfall, they reached the outskirts of Avelorn. The city was massive, its towering walls lined with soldiers bearing the imperial crest. Torches burned bright, illuminating the steel tips of their spears. They were ready. Kael studied the defenses. A direct assault would be suicide. But a siege would take too long. Selene stood beside him, arms crossed. “What’s the plan?” Kael’s lips curled slightly. “I know someone inside.” Selene raised an eyebrow. “Another former ally?” Kael didn’t answer. Instead, he turned to his second-in-command. “Send the signal.” A single arrow, tipped with fire, shot into the night sky. For a long moment, nothing happened. Then— The gates of Avelorn creaked open. Betrayal and Bloodshed Kael led the first wave into the city, his warriors moving like shadows. But the moment they stepped inside, he felt it. Something was wrong. The streets were too quiet. Selene’s hand went to her sword. “It’s a trap.” Then— The gates slammed shut. A dozen soldiers emerged from the darkness, their blades gleaming in the torchlight. Kael’s eyes narrowed. He knew who had set this up before he even saw her. And then, from the shadows— Lena stepped forward. Dressed in black, her hair pulled back, she looked the same as he remembered. But her eyes… Her eyes were colder now. Kael’s grip on his sword tightened. “You planned this.” Lena tilted her head, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips. “You always were predictable, Kael.” Selene growled beside him, already drawing her weapon. “I’ll kill her.” Lena barely spared her a glance. “You can try.” Then, with a flick of her wrist— The imperial soldiers attacked. The Battle for Avelorn Kael barely had time to react before the first blade came at him. He dodged, twisting to the side as he drove his sword into the soldier’s chest. Blood sprayed across the cobblestones, but there was no time to stop. Another soldier lunged. Kael caught the strike on his blade, twisting the man’s wrist until the bones snapped. Selene fought beside him, a whirlwind of steel and fury. She moved like a storm, her twin blades cutting through soldiers like they were nothing. Her warriors joined the fight, clashing against the imperial forces in a brutal melee. Screams echoed through the streets. The scent of blood filled the air. Kael’s mind was focused on one thing—Lena. He fought his way toward her, cutting down anyone who stood in his path. But she was fast. Too fast. She moved through the battle with an assassin’s grace, her daggers flashing under the moonlight. She wasn’t just fighting. She was leading them. And for the first time in years, Kael saw the truth. Lena wasn’t just working for Edric. She was his second-in-command. A Warrior’s Choice Kael’s heart pounded. He had always known Lena was dangerous, but this… This was worse than he had imagined. She met his gaze across the battlefield, and for a split second, there was something there. A flicker of the past. A flicker of regret. Then it was gone. She turned away, disappearing into the shadows. Kael’s jaw clenched. He wanted to chase her, to demand answers. But there was no time. The battle raged around him, and his men needed him. So he made a choice. He let her go. And he turned back to the war. The Aftermath By the time dawn broke, Avelorn belonged to Kael. The streets were littered with bodies, the scent of blood thick in the air. Selene stood beside him, surveying the c*****e. “We won.” Kael exhaled, the weight of victory settling on his shoulders. “For now.” Because war wasn’t over. Not yet. Lena was still out there. And as long as she lived, Edric would always know their moves. Kael clenched his fists. This wasn’t just about revenge anymore. It was about finishing what he started. And he would not stop until his uncle was dead.
