~ Lily ~ Sleep was apparently no longer something I participated in. I used to be excellent at sleeping like a log. I had invested heavily in being unconscious. I had routines, expensive sheets, a temperature-controlled mattress, and a bedroom designed by somebody who charged more than most people earned in a year. Now it was two fifty-three in the morning, and I was staring at my ceiling like it owed me money. Beyond the windows, the city glowed beneath the darkness while traffic crawled through the streets below. Somewhere in the distance, sirens wailed, reminding me that Manhattan was a city that never slept. Apparently, neither did I. With a sigh, I rolled onto my side, closed my eyes, opened them again, and checked the clock. Two fifty-four. Wonderful. An entire minute had pass
