Chapter 2: Unfamiliar Threads Luca paced the hospital hallway, his footsteps soft against the cold tile. The flickering lights overhead and the sterile scent of antiseptic made his chest tighten—everything felt painfully still. His hands stayed buried deep in his coat pockets. He had never felt this helpless before. She was a stranger—a woman he could’ve ignored—but when he saw her collapse, he couldn’t. He leaned against Room 204, studying the door. He didn’t belong here, yet now he couldn't stay away. His chest tightened with something he didn’t recognize—concern. Hope. Guilty care. A nurse’s voice broke the quiet. “Sir, she’s awake. We called her grandmother—she’s coming now.” He nodded silently. No parents. No friends. Just her grandmother. That struck him hard. He stepped silently into the room. Aarya lay on the hospital bed. Pale, vulnerable, but breathing steadily. The faint beep of the heart monitor sounded soft in the room. Her eyes fluttered open. She felt the ache—tender limbs, pounding head—but underneath it all, confusion. Fear. She remembered the crash, the voice that steadied her, warm arms lifting her. And then... darkness. She tried to move but pain stopped her. “I’m awake,” she whispered. Luca remained close to the door frame, still keeping his distance. His coat hung over one arm, suit rumpled. Hesitation tugged at him. “Hey,” his voice was low, careful. She turned her head, slowly. She saw him—taller, darker, quieter than most men. “You...” She swallowed. “Thank you.” He moved closer, sitting on a chair by the window. “No thanks needed. You’re okay now.” She glanced toward the door, but saw only an empty hallway. No one else was there. “I thought someone would help me. But you did,” she said softly. He looked surprised at her words. He cleared his throat. “I just couldn’t leave you... not like that.” A door opened gently. An elderly woman entered—Aarya’s grandmother. Her hair was silver, her expression worried and loving. She hurried to Aarya’s side and wrapped her arms around her. “My darling,” she said, voice quivering. “Thank goodness you’re awake.” Aarya smiled, tears in her eyes. “Grandma.” Luca stayed in the background, watching. He didn’t interrupt their reunion. It wasn’t his place. After a moment, her grandmother looked up. She saw Luca and moved toward him. “You... he saved her?” she asked softly. He nodded. Tears gathered in her grandmother’s eyes. “Thank you,” she whispered. She took his hand gently. “Thank you for not walking away.” He swallowed, looking at his own hand in hers. The warmth surprised him. He’d made choices before, terrible choices—but this? It felt different. “She’s all I have,” the woman said. “And you saved her. I’ll never forget that.” Luca nodded again, uncertain how to respond. He returned to his spot by the window. Aarya watched him, taking in his quiet purpose, the tension in his shoulders. “I don’t even know your name,” she said. “Luca,” he replied quietly. Her eyes brightened slightly. “Thank you, Luca.” He looked at her, as though realizing her gratitude meant more than he’d expected. He shifted uncomfortably. “I... should go.” She nodded, studying him. “You don’t have to.” He shook his head. “I don’t belong in your world—not like that.” Her grandmother gave him a gentle look. “But you do matter. You helped me. You helped her.” He swallowed again, then looked at Aarya. She was still fragile, but she met his gaze without fear. “You saved me,” she repeated. He closed his eyes, barely audible. “I know.” Luca stood, smoothing his suit. Aarya’s eyes lingered on him—silent question, silent hope. “I’m glad you woke up,” he said softly. “That’s all I needed to know.” He turned and walked to the door, pausing briefly at the threshold before disappearing down the hallway. Outside, Luca leaned against the wall and took a steadying breath. The corridor lights flickered. He closed his eyes. Her name—Aarya. Her strength, her vulnerability. She was alone but stood firm. The woman who dropped tears of gratitude in his palm had made something inside him shift. He couldn’t let her know who he used to be. But he'd saved her today. And deep down, he knew she had saved him too.
