Chapter seven
I pack up my essentials, making sure I'm taking only necessities when my little sister catches me in the act. I yelp at her standing there, knowing she scared me half to death.
"What are you doing?" She asks and I dread telling her, knowing that she's too smart and she'd figure it out in an instant.
"I have to go," I tell her. "Please don't tell mom... at least not yet."
"Why? Where are you going?" She asks, innocently, although I know the motive behind her question.
"You can't tell mom, Maury. She would flip if she ever knew I left." I tell her and my sister looks at me a long while.
"Alright," she replies and I sigh of relief. "As long as you tell me where you're going."
"I can't," I tell her and she looks at me. "I can't because I know mom can pry it out of you. And she can't know where I'm going, she would kill me after she kills you."
"Why would she kill me?"
"For allowing me to go."
"You're older, what-" I interrupt her.
"Forget it, Maury. It's not important," I tell her and I wrap around her for a hug.
"At least let me know it's not going to be dangerous, I don't want mom to kill me too."
I laugh, knowing it's dangerous but I can't tell a 10 year old that.
"It's not dangerous," I lie. "I just need to do a quick errand, mom won't even know I'm gone."
She nods, bouncing her way out of my room and I'm left with my thoughts. I hear the cheers of the fighting continuing, planning my escape. My mom usually doesn't leave the games until they're finished, I can't even imagine what she must have gone through to enjoy so much violence and death. I pack up the rest of my essentials, knowing I'll have to come up with some excuse to get past the guards to the entrance of our realm.
My mom always told us stories of the outside world, how dangerous and cruel it is. The vampires are heartless savages and I need to find some way to stop them. It won't be long until they turn to fey for their food source, once you've had a taste of the good stuff, you never want to go back. The monsters prey on the witches, they're still part human but they're also part fey. Faeries are the only ones with magic, I guess you could also say that vampires are magical. But they're only magical because they're demons, they have no soul which means they feel no remorse for their victims.
Humans may not be magical but they still clutch to their humanity. The witches have fey blood running through their veins, they can't fly or have any other faerie abilities, but the magic in them allows them to do things humans can't. The power flowing through them makes them a target, I can only imagine what the vampires will do when they find a whole litter of magical beings that are full fey.
I grab my things, making my way quietly through the halls to the exit. I find the doors, oddly unguarded and slip through. I close the doors behind me and I'm enveloped in a tunnel of darkness. The tunnel continues on until I see a tiny white light at the end, it takes me a while before I reach it. When I finally do, there's a watery barrier in front of it. It looks like some sort of protection spell my mom talked about in my youth, I touch it and my hand goes through it.
The feeling of it sends tingles through my hand and I quickly pull my hand out, the feeling is strange and makes me want to avoid it too. It's not painful, but uncomfortable. I take a deep breathe, knowing I have to go through it and feel the tingling but I decide to put on a brave face. No one ever said this journey would be easy. I take a deep breathe and soldier on, I walk through it and my entire body is wrapped in the tingles. I feel myself shudder until the feeling is gone and I'm out in the open sunlight. It's a bit blinding at first but my eyes adjust.
I look around at my surroundings, seeing a white but wet substance on the ground. My feet are freezing as well as my entire body since I'm only wearing a summer outfit, in my realm, it's only warm weather all the time. My mom talked about the seasons in the human world, how it gets cold sometimes in some places and hot in others. I'm guessing it's the cold season. I remembered to pack some clothes for cold weather, I pull them out and put them on. The cold doesn't seem to be as much of a bother anymore and I trudge through the white stuff on the ground until I come across a wooden structure in the distance.
There are humans playing outside, laughing and I see two other larger humans laughing with them. I'm guessing the larger ones are the parents and the smaller ones are their children. I wonder what it's like to be like with my mom and sadness washes over me. I start to realize how I look, their skin seems to be a white color and mine is a shimmering dark green. I decide to use my magic to transform myself. I make my skin similar colors as them and determine which hair color I should choose. Every fey has midnight black hair and since I'm trying to look human, my hair color won't really fit into the look. I set on tree bark brown, humans seem to have similar colors like that.
I don't recognize the tongue they use much since my people have our own language we use, human words seem to complicated to learn. My mom would teach us some words but my native dialect seemed more natural to me. I elect to use my magic to allow me to blend more into society, knowledge flows into my head like water and it seems a little overwhelming at first but I get used to the words. I make my way through the forest, I hide behind trees so I'm not seen because I prefer to avoid interaction with humans. I'm still not as comfortable using human language and I prefer to steer clear of using it.
I hear the laughter way behind me and I come across a road, big metallic things zoom past me and I fall to the ground, afraid of what just passed me. I get back up on my feet and stop at the edge of the road, a bit of a distance ahead, I see a girl holding her hand out. Her thumb pointed to the sky, I decide to copy her and point my hand out. I'm afraid that the things racing by me might cut my hand off but I see her holding her hand out and it stayed where it is as the machines rush in front of her and I keep my hand out.
One of the things slows down, picking up the girl and stopping in front of me. The girl is in the back, giving me a smile and another woman in front of her, sitting in a chair rolls down a clear thing in front of me. I'm shocked at what just happened and I hear her speak.
"Need a ride?"
