I stared out the window at the diner Donnie had taken me to, he was talking away but I had no idea what he was saying.
My mind was on the previous night's encounter with Sam.
"Stephi! Are you even listening to me?"
I sighed, "No. Soul broke out and went straight up to that strange guy last night. Didn't attack him or anything."
Donnie frowned, "Excuse me? Here I am, pouring my heart out and you're thinking of some other man?"
I rolled my eyes, "Don't make it sound pervy. It's just strange and it's bugging me."
"You need to get out more, you barely leave that house. Why don't we go out tonight?"
"Donnie, you know that the club thing isn't for me."
"Come one, babe, just this once."
I sighed and turned away, one of the many things I hated about Donnie was that he never took no for an answer.
My eyes fell on the large figure standing with his back against a building wall.
Sam.
"Yeah, sure, whatever, Donnie."
"I'll pick you up at nine."
I was zoned out again, watching Sam as he looked up, his eyes meeting mine.
This time I battled to look away.
What the hell was going on?

As I waited on my porch for Donnie in the dark, I noticed Sam once again passing by.
Possessed by some type of unknown courage I jumped up and went over, slightly wobbly in the heels I wore.
"Hey! Uh, Sam?"
I half expected him to ignore me, but he didn't.
He didn't turn to me either, simply stopped moving.
"Do you stay nearby? You're always walking past."
"No."
"Not very chatty, are we?"
He turned to me and I fought the urge to take a step away.
"Look, I know how the loner vibe works, but if Soul likes you, you can't be as bad as people say."
He let out a humorless laugh, "What are you doing, Stephanie?"
I frowned, and this time I did take a step back, "How... I didn't tell you my name."
"I heard it. At the restaurant."
"Right, of course." I still had a rather uneasy feeling about this.
"What are you doing? Why are you speaking to me?"
I shrugged, "I don't know."
A car pulled up and I groaned as Donnie got out, wishing I had been given more time to speak to Sam.
Sam glanced at him briefly, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Donnie frowned at me as he approached, "Is that what you're wearing? To a club? Really?"
I sighed, there was nothing wrong with my outfit of high-heeled ankle boots, dark jeans, and a tank top.
Donnie glanced up at Sam, even at 6 feet tall, this man-made Donnie look tiny.
"Oh, hey, you're the big guy."
Sam tilted his head slightly and I worried momentarily by the look in his eye.
Donnie seemed to notice it too because he took a step back, "Uh, Steph, come on."
"See you around, Sam." I followed Donnie to the car and got in, feeling Sam's eyes on me the entire time.
"Geez, you didn't tell me that freak is the Hulk."
"He's not a freak, Donnie."
Donnie raised a brow as he started the car, "Really? Are we friends now?"
I sighed and stared out the window as we drove towards the club, already regretting my choice.
I sat at the bar with a drink while Donnie danced on the dance floor with people I didn't know.
My head already hurt from the pounding music and flashing lights.
I turned my back when Donnie came over, not in the mood for him at all.
"Come dance! Loosen up a bit!"

SAM
I stood in the rain, waiting to collect the next soul.
When They banished me to this wasteland called earth, I had known I would have to be amongst these vermin, the one thing that kept me going was that I would be allowed to continue collecting souls.
Unfortunately, I had to do it according to the book.
Which I had been doing just fine until that woman decided to take notice of me.
Now I stood in the rain, awaiting my next soul, knowing that tonight she would be hurt.
I saw it all, I knew what was coming even the when and where.
Do not get involved
I leaned back against the brick wall, closing my eyes, and instantly saw her eyes.
My eyes snapped open and I began involuntarily moving in the direction of the club.
I could feel exactly where she was.
That human male she was with was no good.
His soul was so dark for one of them.
I wondered how much more They could punish me if I took a life whose time had not come yet.

STEPHI
I had just returned to my drink, taking it from Donnie and sitting back at the bar.
About to take a sip, a large gloved hand covered the glass and slammed it down with such force that it shattered.
I yelped, jumping to my feet, to see none other than Sam.
"What the hell are you doing?!"
"It was spiked."
"What? How do you know that? Where did you even come from?"
"You should go home."
I gestured to a very drunk Donnie, "My ride is having the time of his life, I'm stuck here until he decides otherwise."
Sam didn't even glance in his direction, "You need to go home. This place is not safe."
"You are so odd, dude."
Donnie came tumbling over, "Hey! He is following you!"
I rolled my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose, "Donnie, I want to go home now, please."
"But we just got here!"
I sighed, not that he could hear me over the music, "We've been here for four hours!"
Donnie turned to Sam, "Can you take her home for me, man?"
My mouth dropped open, was he seriously asking this huge, strange man to take me home?
Sam seemed to be having some sort of conflict within himself over this before not so subtly grabbing my wrist and pulling me after him.
"Hey! Let go!"
"No. You need to go home, Lili. And it's evident your date doesn't give a shit."
I stopped and pulled my hand from his, "Okay, how the fvck do you know my surname?"
He froze and for the first time, I could see some type of emotion in his eyes.
He looked as if he had been caught out.
He shook his head and pushed me out the club door.
"Do we have to walk?"
He gave me a rather annoyed look before gesturing.
I turned and froze.
It was a large black chopper, with grey whispery skulls, and flames on it.
It looked like the same bike from my dreams.
No, it couldn't be
The rain began to fall harder and I couldn't help but look up at the sky, half expecting to see the winged creatures from my dream.
And that is exactly what I saw, however, it was so far up that I was convinced my mind was playing tricks on me.
I still took an involuntary step back, hitting straight into Sam.
When I looked up, he was staring at me, his face once again blank, his hair falling in a curtain framing him.
"Uh, sorry."
I felt dazed when I got off his bike.
"Thank you."
He barely acknowledged me as he rode off into the night, and this bugged me somehow.
Who was he? Why was he so mysterious? And why did I have this intense need to be nice to him?
