Chapter 6

We had finished our meals and were leaving the strange restaurant when Sam went back to speak to the strange waiter, leaving me at the door for a few minutes. The conversation appeared to be rather heated from what I could tell. Glancing around the restaurant, I once again thought how strange it was. The heat from the fire seemed more intense than a normal flame, the air was warm, humid almost. Looking closely at the gold lining over the red walls, it appeared the gold was liquid, which I knew was impossible, but still, it did not look like any paint I had ever seen. Glancing over I noted that Sam still appeared deep in conversation, so I turned back to the wall, placing my hand against it. My finger went straight through the gold. "What the fvck?" I breathed out. My fingers that went through the wall felt warm, warm enough to cause discomfort without causing pain. "Stephanie!" I jumped at how loud Sam's voice had become, spinning to look over at him, sneaking a glance down at my hand which had gone through a wall. He walked over, "What are you doing?" "I, uh," I glanced back at the wall, "Was taking a closer look at the pain, I love the gold." I lied, I didn't want him to think I was crazy. "Let's go." I nodded, giving my surroundings one last look before following him out. The first thing I noticed when I stepped outside was that the rain had stopped. "Thank God the rain is gone." He mumbled something that sounded like, "Don't need to give Him all the credit." Glancing at him he smiled, "My bike is here, I can give you a lift?" "Sure, I think that's a better option than walking." Following him over to his bike, I'm sure my whole face scrunched up in confusion at the black cat sitting on it. "Why is there a cat on your bike?" "She's mine. She follows me some nights." "Isn't that... dangerous for her?" "No. She is well trained." This man just got stranger and stranger, that was for sure. Getting on the bike behind him, the cat perched herself between us and we left. The cat remained on the bike as Sam walked me to my door, greeting Soul as I opened it. And then the rain began to fall once again. "At least it waited for me to get home," I joked, "Do you want to come in till it eases up?" "No, it's fine. Have a good night." I nodded before going inside, suddenly extremely tired. I took a quick shower and got into bed, Soul curling up at my feet as I dozed off. The heat was close to unbearable, I stood in the strangest place. The ground was dry cracked earth, hot molten ran between the cracks. I crouched to inspect this, my white dress pooling around me. Wait. White dress? Since when did I even own a white dress? I stood, looking around I saw nothing but empty land. I heard a screech above and when I looked up, I wished I hadn't. Above me flew pitch-black creatures, shadows almost, it looked as though they were long and winding, their legs more like tails. And suddenly one stopped high in the sky, tilting its head to look at me. Its almost hollow eye sockets will only have a small red dot in each of them. It opened its mouth in a grotesque smile and flew down at me. A shrill scream escaped my mouth as I ran. I somehow knew that this creature had a speed I could never match, yet I still ran, I could do nothing else but run and hope that it would not catch me. I tripped and as I fell to the ground, my face inches from the burning liquid within the ground, I turned over onto my back to avoid the crack in the ground. And I saw the creature was right above me, now only a few inches away from me. And then I heard a roar, it seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at once, the ground shook at the sound and I shuddered in fear. The creature before me froze, red orbs darting left and right before it shrank back, and I realized that if this monster feared the sound of the roar, I did not want to be around to see who it belonged to. As I shakily stood and turned around, I saw the figure and instantly knew that had been the source of the terrifying sound. He was too far for me to see his face, but he stood tall, taller than any human I had ever seen. Something about his long dark coat looked familiar. And then it clicked in my brain why this new creature looked familiar. I jumped up in bed, drenched in sweat and his name was the only thing I could mutter, "Sam." The large creature in my nightmare looked just like Sam. I glanced over at Soul who sat upright at my window. My now open window. I had closed that window. Getting out of bed, on shaky legs I walked over to the window, the curtain blowing in the wind. And when I looked out, I saw none other than Sam, walking slowly away from my house. "What the hell? Was he in here?" I asked as if somehow something would respond to me. My phone buzzed and I jumped, yelping in fright. "God, Stephi, get a grip!" I snapped at myself as I walked over to get my phone, "Hello?" "S-Stephi!" I rolled my eyes in annoyance and walked back over to the window, "Donnie, what the fvck do you want?" I could tell by his laugh he was drunk, "I miss you." "I don't care, Donnie." My eyes were firmly on the street, watching from my second-story window for any signs of movement. "Then why did you answer my call?" "Because I didn't check the caller's I.D." "You sound dis-, uh, sis-sacred. Distracted." "I am, go away." I cut the call and switched my phone off, throwing it over onto the bed. Glancing down at the street again I chewed on my thumbnail, there didn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary, but I still felt as if someone was watching me. Glancing down at Soul I noted that his eyes were also glued to the street below, but he did not seem threatened by whatever he saw, which automatically made me think that it was Sam he was seeing. Why is he always around when I have a nightmare? I wondered silently. Closing and locking my window I returned to my bed, sitting down with my back against the headboard, I let out a sigh, knowing I would never get back to sleep now. I decided that I would call in sick to work later, I wanted to try and get some rest instead of working while exhausted.
