Chapter 9

I was back at work, and when Sam came in I had Laura serve him. I wasn't entirely sure why I was hurt by his behavior, but I was. I had thought that we were becoming friends, and then suddenly he had simply shut down again. Laura came back and sighed, "What a weirdo. But, what a sexy weirdo." I rolled my eyes, "Don't you say that about almost anyone who walks in here?" "Don't worry, I'm not trying to move in on your man." She nudged me playfully. "He is not my man, Laura." "But you want him to be." "No." She laughed, "Sure, Steph, whatever you say. Listen, I have some time off from school, why don't we go out and have a good time this weekend, girl time and all of that." "God, Laura, the last time we had a girl's night you almost killed us." "You had fun!" I sighed, "I don't have anyone to look after Soul. He wants to kill anyone aside from Sam." "Great." She walked around the counter. "No! Laura!" But she wasn't listening to me, she walked straight up to Sam. I glared daggers at the back of her head as she spoke to Sam before deciding to go over myself. "Whatever she is asking you, I didn't put her up to it." I shot her a glare. Sam placed his coffee mug down, "I have no problem watching Soul. How long do you need me?" Laura grinned, "Tomorrow night and Saturday night, only the two nights in a row." "That's fine." Laura squealed like a child, "Awesome! Thank you!" I rolled my eyes yet again before walking away. × "Laura, is this really necessary?"I asked for what felt like the hundredth time, my phone on speaker while I rushed around my room in my underwear. "Yes, you need to get out more and I need a good party. Wear something sexy, you may just find a cute guy to take your mind off Mr. Tall-dark-and-broody." I rolled my eyes, "I do not need to take my mind off of anyone. And I am not looking to hook up with anyone." I glanced at the dresses hanging in my closet. "Whatever, just make yourself all pretty." "So you're saying I don't normally look pretty?" I pulled a black dress from my closet and held it against me as I eyed my reflection in the full-length mirror. "No, I did not, don't put words into my mouth. Have you gotten dressed yet? Sam is going to be there at any second, you know." "I can't decide what to wear." Dropping the dress I pulled a short red one out and held it up, it wasn't anything fancy, but it was sexy in a way that wasn't over the top; short and fitting with only a slight bit of cleavage showing. "Getting dressed now." "Okay, I'm going to hang up and fetch you. Is your dog outside?" "Yes, he's outback." "Great, I'll let myself in, see you soon." Getting the dress on, I applied very little makeup before blow-drying my hair and leaving it down in waves. Something Donnie had always praised me on was my ability to get ready so quickly. Slipping on a pair of black heels, I winced, not looking forward to wearing these all night. I eyed my black combat-styled boots for a few seconds, contemplating whether I should instead wear those. But I decided that I would wear those the following night instead. Heading downstairs I saw Laura at my counter and Sam standing next to her. His gaze on me caused me to falter slightly. "Red looks good on you." "Thank you." Laura got to her feet, "Great, let's go." Sam caught my wrist, "Wait, will you both be drinking?" Laura nodded. "How do you expect to get home if you are both drunk? Honestly, none of you even value your own lives," he held out his hand, "Laura, I will drive you there and pick you up, keys." She eyed me before dropping her car keys in his hand. I frowned, "How will you know when to fetch us?" "Call your landline, I'll be here with Soul the whole time." I hated to admit it, but his idea was better than Laura endangering us as well as others on the road. Once we had arrived at the club of Laura's choosing, she had enthusiastically jumped out of the car, but before I could get out, Sam leaned his hand over, keeping the door shut. "If anything happens, you call, do you understand? Even if you're just uncomfortable." I nodded and he moved his hand, allowing me to get out. Laura blew him a kiss before we entered the club, and I winced at how loud it was. I had just walked in and I already wanted to be back at home. Grabbing my hand she made a beeline straight for the bar where we ordered four shots. I was grateful to Sam for offering to drive us because now we could both drink. I had barely finished my second shooter when she dragged me to the dancefloor, our bodies shoved together in a mix of so many. We had only danced for a few minutes before we returned to the bar to order more drinks. I could tell that Laura planned this strictly to get drunk. Turning back to the dancefloor, I felt my mood dampen as my eyes landed on Donnie. I downed my drink and joined Laura on the dancefloor again, hoping that alcohol and dancing would allow me to forget my dislike for my ex. After a few hours and a lot of drinks later, I was beginning to believe that I had drunk more than Laura. And a tad too much. My eyes weren't focusing correctly and my feet no longer felt attached to my body as we attempted to make our way outside to wait for Sam who Laura had already called. I had smoothly forgotten my home number in my drunken state. As usual, I was currently swearing off alcohol. I didn't drink much and hated that I had allowed myself to lose track tonight. This was extremely embarrassing. "Hey." Of course, it would be Donnie. I glared at him, sitting down on the small wall and concentrating on keeping my balance. "Jesus, Laura, why did you let her drink so much?" "She's a big girl, Donnie-boy." "Look at her! This is ridiculous. Let me get her home." Now, I may have been drunk, but I knew this was not normal behavior for Donnie. "You didn't care when we were together why now?" Laura lit a cigarette, "Sam will be here any moment now." "Ah, so you've moved on already then." If my head wasn't spinning I would have had a wise remark to shoot back. "Here he is now," Laura said as her car pulled up. I heard the door slam and glanced up to see Sam storming around the car. "What the fvck is this?" Donnie held up his hands, "I had no involvement with this." Sam extended his hand and helped me to my feet, opening the car door for me to get in. I heard him saying something to Donnie before he got in, but couldn't be sure what. "Laura, I do not know where you stay." He said curtly as she got into the back seat. "GPS is a thing, you know. Drop me off and take my car back to Steph's. I'll get it after our next round tomorrow." "I sincerely hope that you won't be drinking this much again." I chuckled, "No, I won't be drinking at all tomorrow." I heard Laura chuckle before I began to doze off. I woke up as Sam dropped me to my bed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." He was still so close to me, leaning over me that his long hair hung down around my face. I smiled (at least I think I did) and tugged at a strand of his hair, "I think you're hot. But you confuse me." Jesus drunk me had zero filters. "I don't mean to confuse you, Stephi. You make me feel things that I didn't know I was capable of feeling, and it scares me." I stretched out, laying my arms above my head, and he stood, making me pout that he wasn't close to me anymore. I fell asleep for a few seconds and woke up, not seeing any sign of Sam, I began tugging at my dress. "Hey, whoa, what are you doing?" I jumped, noticing him in the corner for the first time. "It's hot! I can't reach my zip." I was beginning to get extremely whiny. He came over to the bed, "Where are your, um, sleeping clothes?" "Drawer." He went over to the drawer and then returned, helping me to my feet, he turned me so my back was to him. He placed his hands on my shoulders and paused for a second before I felt him unzip the dress, his movements slow against my skin. He cleared his throat before handing me my shirt and turning away. I dropped the dress to the floor and put the shirt on, "You can look, I'm covered. How long was I asleep for?" "About thirty minutes," his eyes dropped to my bare thighs, my oversized shirt covered me, but it also showed a lot of legs. "You should sleep." I nodded, but unfortunately being drunk was making me stupid. And flirty. I toyed with the hem of my shirt, watching as his eyes once again found my legs, watching the movements of my hands. What in God's name had gotten into me? "Stephi." His voice held warning to it, not that I cared at this point. I took a step closer to him and he tore his eyes away to stare at my face, "What are you doing, Stephi?" I smiled and placed a hand on his chest, I wasn't sure if I was imagining it, but I was sure I felt him shudder slightly. So I leaned up on my tiptoes and planted my lips against his, slightly surprised that he returned the kiss, his hands clutching at my back. And then I ruined it all by running over to the bathroom, making it to the toilet just in time for the alcohol to come rushing back. Fvck my life.
