Isolda's POV
Has weeks passed, the obsidian spires felt warmer than when Rowan brought me.The maids of the court were silent as ghosts when I passed, their eyes darting to the floor, yet their whispers trailed behind me like poisonous smoke. They called me the stolen flower, the mortal blight, the girl who had bewitched the King with a touch of witchroot and a desperate heart. I ignored them, my focus tethered to the warmth of the small, spiked creature that slept curled around my ankles every night. Rowan's messenger had told me that my mother was now well though i still hoped i could see and tell her everything.
Rowan was a storm in human form, unpredictable and devastating, yet he looked at me as if I were the only fixed point in a shifting world. He had promised to show me the kingdom. We spent hours in the library of singing stones, where the books hummed secrets of lost empires, and he would lean over me, his scent of wintergreen and smoke filling my lungs until I forgot how to breathe. Every brush of his hand against my shoulder, every lingering gaze that traced the line of my throat, felt like a slow burn, a fire that consumed the fear and left something more volatile in its wake.
One evening, he led me to the terrace overlooking the Valley of Veils, where the flora glowed with a bioluminescent hunger, pulsing in rhythms that matched the beating of my own heart. The wind whipped through my hair, carrying the scent of ozone and crushed lilies, and Rowan stepped behind me, his chest a solid wall against my back. His arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me flush against him, and I could feel the hard line of his desire pressing into the small of my back. He didn't speak, but his lips found the sensitive curve of my neck, his teeth grazing the skin with a possessive hunger that made my toes curl into the cold marble.
I leaned back into him, my head resting on his shoulder as we watched the silver mists swirl below. The power he wielded was terrifying, a darkness that could swallow the sun, yet in the quiet moments, he was merely a man who was my captor and haunted my dreams. I turned in his arms, my fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw, and for a heartbeat, the mask of the ruthless king slipped. His amber eyes were molten, searching mine for a sign of hesitation, a flicker of the rabbit that wanted to run. I didn't pull away. Instead, I arched my body against his, my palms sliding up to cup his face, inviting the storm to finally break over me.
Rowan groaned, a sound of pure, tortured restraint, before he crushed his mouth to mine. This kiss was not a negotiation or a game of power; it was a collision of desperate needs. His tongue swept through my mouth with a demanding heat, and I met him with a passion that surprised us both, my nails digging into the velvet of his coat. He lifted me effortlessly, my legs wrapping around his hips as he backed me into the shadow of a weeping willow made of starlight. The pup yapped startling us.
"I will not f**k you until you are so deep in love with me that you will willingly and wholly give yourself to me" he growled against my skin, his voice a vibration that echoed in my marrow. He pulled back, his eyes flashing with a hunger that seemed to consume the very moonlight. The restraint in his movements was agonizing, a deliberate torture that left me shaking. He stood, his chest heaving, and for a moment the predatory mask returned, his gaze scanning the trembling line of my body as if calculating the exact moment my resolve would snap.
I involuntarilly reached for him, my fingers brushing the heavy silk of his trousers, my breath coming in jagged hitches. The air between us felt thick, saturated with the scent of our shared arousal and the lingering tang of the star-willow. "Rowan, please," I whispered, the words a fragile plea that sounded like a prayer and yet i didn't know exactly what i wanted. He caught my wrist in a grip that was firm but not cruel, pinning my hand against my chest. He watched my breast heave, the peak of my n****e straining against the thin silk, and a low, guttural sound escaped his throat.
He didn't give in, but he didn't let me go. Instead, he swept me up in his arms, carrying me back toward the obsidian halls. The walk was a blur of silver shadows and the rhythmic thud of my own heart. When he reached my chambers, he didn't toss me onto the bed. He set me down with a slow, deliberate care, his thumb tracing the line of my lower lip one last time. "Sleep, little thief," he murmured, his voice now a velvet caress. "Dream of what I will do to you when the moon reaches its zenith."
He turned to leave, but as he reached the door, he paused, looking back at me over his shoulder. The coldness of the king had merged with the warmth of the man, creating something intoxicatingly dangerous. "The gardens are blooming with night-blooming cereus tomorrow," he said, his gaze softening just enough to make my chest ache. "I shall take you there at dawn, and we will see if you can still find the strength to resist me when the world is waking." With a final, lingering look that promised a thousand different kinds of ruin, he vanished into the corridor, leaving me shivering in the silence, my body still humming with the ghost of his touch.
My body was betraying my mind, i simply wanted to go back to my mother in Elmhallow and live the life i was born in and used to, not be in some magical world with its king doing forbidden things to my body. I lay in the bed for hours, tossing and turning, my skin still humming from where his hands had touched me. The sheets felt like ice against my thighs, and every time i closed my eyes, i saw the amber fire of his gaze. The pup, now a permanent shadow in my life, climbed onto the duvet and let out a soft, rattling purr, licking my cheek with a tongue that tasted of ash. I looked at the moon, its pale light filtering through the obsidian window, and felt a surge of longing that terrified me. I was no longer just a captive. I was a woman starving for a man who treated my desire like a game of chess.
When the first sliver of dawn touched the spires, Rowan was already there, leaning against my doorframe with a predatory stillness. He wore a robe of midnight silk that clung to the broad expanse of his shoulders, his eyes tracing my form as i sat up, my hair a tangled mess across my shoulders. He didn't speak for a long moment, just watched the way the morning light played across my skin. Then, he stepped forward, the scent of crushed wintergreen filling the room, and pressed a single, searing kiss to the center of my forehead. "The gardens await," he murmured, his voice a low vibration that made my stomach flip. "Do not make me wait a second longer, Isolda."
He led me through the winding corridors to the hidden terrace, where the night-blooming cereus were just beginning to fold their petals. The flowers were ethereal, ghostly white blooms that smelled of vanilla and old secrets. As we walked, Rowan's hand slid into mine, his fingers interlacing with mine in a grip that was surprisingly tender. He stopped before a cluster of the flowers, the dew clinging to the petals like liquid diamonds. He turned me toward him, his gaze dropping to my lips, and for the first time, i saw something other than hunger in his eyes. It was a raw, aching vulnerability that mirrored the void in my own chest.
"You are a dangerous thing, Isolda," he whispered, his hand moving to cup my cheek. "You make me want things that a king should not crave." I leaned into his palm, my heart hammering against my ribs. Before i could answer, he pulled me flush against him, his mouth descending upon mine with a ferocity that felt like a reclamation. For the first time the kiss was slow and deep, tasting of salt and desire, He lifted me, pressing me back against the cool stone of the garden wall, my body craved his touch but i knew better than to give in to the desires of the flesh, who knew how many fae women he had taken to bed and here i was responding to a touch that would take my virginity and my heart.
Rowan groaned against my lips, his hand sliding beneath my gown to find the heat of my thigh. He paused, his breathing ragged, as he felt the dampness of my arousal. "You want this," he murmured, his voice a dark caress that vibrated through my skin. "You want me to rip this silk away and mark you as mine." I gasped, my head falling back against the stone, my fingers digging into his shoulders. I wanted him with an intensity that frightened me, a hunger that blurred the lines between love and obsession. I felt the rough texture of his palms against my skin and the world outside the garden ceased to exist.
He didn't stop there, his lips traveling down to the slope of my breast, nipping at the peak of my n****e through the thin fabric until i was arching into him, a soft cry escaping my lips. His hand moved higher, his fingers teasing the edge of my panties, his touch electric and demanding. "Tell me," he growled, his eyes flashing like molten gold. "Tell me you belong to me, and i will give you everything." The air was thick with the scent of blooming cereus and raw lust, the tension between us stretched to a breaking point.
I looked into his eyes and saw the monster and the man entwined, a beautiful chaos that called to the wildness in my own soul. "I am yours," i breathed, my voice a shattered whisper. "I am not yet ready" i said looking down. i wanted to be sure before i did something i would regret though i knew i didnt have much of a choice. " But i am yours."
Rowan's expression shifted, a flash of something that looked almost like respect crossing his features. He didn't push further, but his hands didn't leave me, holding me in place with a possessive warmth that anchored me to the earth. He pulled back just enough to look at me, his thumb tracing the curve of my lower lip. "A cautious little bird," he murmured, his voice like velvet over stone. "Very well. We shall let the hunger grow. It will make the feast all the more exquisite."
He stepped back, the sudden absence of his heat leaving me shivering despite the morning sun. He reached out and plucked a single, ghostly petal from a cereus bloom, pressing it delicately against the hollow of my throat. The petal felt cold and wet, a stark contrast to the fire he had ignited in my blood. "You are the only thing in this kingdom that does not tremble before me, Isolda," he murmured, his voice thick with a strange, melancholic pride. "It is a trait that will either be your salvation or your ruin." He turned and walked away, his stride slow and regal, leaving me leaning against the garden wall with my breath still ragged and my body aching for a completion he had promised but denied.
