CHAPTER 2 Marcel was about to start the truck when a car stopped in front of them. Billy Joe and Bobby Joe got out of their car. Lanie sighed, and she and Marcel got out to speak with them. “Are you all right, Lanie?” asked Billy Joe. “We saw your car on the side of the road, and we came to see if you were alright.” “I’m fine, Billy Joe. My car quit on me.” “Where are you headed?” asked Bobby Joe. “They are going to tear down our houses and build condos,” said Lanie. “We have been told to move.” “You know we will help you,” said Billy Joe. Lanie sighed. “I know you would, Billy Joe. I’m alright. I accepted a job as housekeeper from Mr. Black Feather. Sally is going with us, and we are moving to Rolling Fork.” “Black Feather,” said Bobby Joe. “Are you with the family that furnishes racehorses?” “Yes, I am,” said Marcel with a nod. “Oh. It’s good to meet you,” said Bobby Joe. “Your family raises some fine horses.” Marcel grinned. “Yes, we do,” he agreed. “I’m sorry,” said Lanie. “Bobby Joe, Billy Joe, this is Marcel Black Feather. Marcel, this is Bobby Joe and Billy Joe Hall. They are not always drunken asses,” Lanie ended with a smile. “Aah, Lanie, I’m sorry about before. You know I didn’t mean anything. I know you are a lady, and I would never treat you as less than one,” said Billy Joe. “I know, Billy Joe,” said Lanie with a smile. “I’m not sorry I kicked you, though. You deserved it.” Billy Joe grinned sheepishly. “Yeah, I did,” he agreed. “It was nice to meet you,” said Marcel. “But we need to get on the road. We have a long drive ahead of us.” Bobby Joe and Billy Joe each came forward and gave Lanie a hug. Lanie hugged them back and smiled at them. “You take care of yourself, Lanie, and if you need anything, just call us,” said Bobby Joe. “Thanks, guys. I will,” promised Lanie. Lanie turned toward the truck, and Marcel helped her into her seat again. Marcel nodded to Bobby Joe and Billy Joe and went to get in the driver’s seat. Bobby Joe and Billy Joe got in their car, and, with a wave to Lanie, they backed up and drove off. Marcel cranked up and looked at Lanie. “Well, shall we try this one more time?” he asked. They all laughed and started their trip in a much better mood.
