"Are you sure?" Kaila asked.
"Yes, I'm sure. It's a dinner to celebrate your mother's birthday, we should honour that," Samuel replied.
"But... I'm not sure, Simon. They're bound to cause trouble," Kaila said worriedly.
"Calm down, as long as we're together, everything will be fine," Samuel reassured Kaila.
A simple lower middle class car was parked in front of a modern semi-minimalist-style house. It was Kaila's parents' house. As the two of them had discussed, it was Kaila's parents' birthday today. To honour and celebrate, Samuel had the idea of joining them for dinner and giving his mother-in-law a present.
Samuel rang the doorbell and soon a young girl appeared who was none other than Kaila's sister. Seeing the two of them arrive, Kiara was astonished for a moment, almost not recognizing who the beautiful woman standing before her was, but on closer inspection she realized that it was Kaila with her perfect figure.
"K-Kaila? Is that really you?" Kaila asked.
Kaila turned to Samuel, then looked back at Kiara and nodded. Seeing this, Kiara was even more shocked.
"Why did you come here?"
"Can't we come and celebrate Mum's birthday? In case you've forgotten, I'm still Mum and Dad's daughter," Kaila said, half annoyed.
Samuel stroked his wife's arm to calm her down, while Kaila just grunted and opened the door a little wider.
"Don't eat any more, we've measured it out just right," Kiara said without embarrassment.
Samuel just smiled understandingly and tried to reassure his wife, they had already been there and it would be a shame to go home. The only thing on his mind was in case his in-laws improved their behavior, although that would be naive.
When Samuel and Kaila arrived in the dining room, everyone in the room looked dumbfounded. Kaila's uncle and aunt were also there. The gathering was a little more crowded this time for some reason.
"Kiara, did you invite your friend?" Kaila's mother asked.
Kaila was silent and made an insulted face, but she tried to control herself for the sake of her husband's pride.
"She is the daughter you married off a few weeks ago," Kiara said, sitting down immediately.
"What? I mean... Really? God, mommy's just pretending to forget. Please don't take offence, Kaila," Kaila's mother said, pretending to be friendly.
Samuel let out a short sigh. He was very sad about the ugly manner of Kaila's family, which he found very unreasonable. How despicable was Kaila to be treated like this.
Kaila's mother and father immediately whispered to each other, glancing at Samuel and Kaila several times, and soon Kaila's mother came over and asked them to sit down.
“Kaila, what kind of treatment did you have to get your face back so quickly?” Kaila's mother asked.
"It's all thanks to the treatment my husband gave me, he's a very talented man," Kaila said, praising Samuel to boost her husband's self-esteem.
Kaila's parents, on the other hand, were sceptical about their daughter's answer. How could a person of modest means do such a thing? They thought it was impossible.
"haha, don't brag. How much does your husband earn?" Kaila's mother asked, pretending to smile kindly, but it was a form of mockery.
"What do you mean?" Kaila asked emotionally.
Kaila felt guilty and couldn't stand Samuel, only Samuel treated Kaila well, but Kaila's family made Samuel look like he had no self-respect.
"Hey, lower your voice with your mum. It's true what your mother said, Simon is just an average poor guy. Stop glorifying him," Kaila's father said angrily.
"Ah, that's OK. Actually... I just wanted to test Simon by getting you two married. I know you've made enough sacrifices, I'll make up for it. I have set my beautiful daughter up to marry a famous medical company owner worth tens of millions of dollars. It's okay, I have five hundred thousand dollars to compensate you for the treatment you gave Kaila. I think that's enough to continue your antique business," said Kaila's mother.
Kaila, who could not bear to hear this, hit the table and stood up. "Nonsense! You're all crazy! What a stupid thing to say! No matter what you say, I will be with my husband! A family of traitorous hypocrites!"
Kaila's mother stood up and almost slapped Kaila, but Samuel quickly held back his mother-in-law's hand. He wasn't angry about the bullying, but he wouldn't allow Kaila to be hurt again by her family.
"Are you brave, Simon? I'll make you a bargain. Five hundred thousand dollars is no small sum for you. Don't be naive," Kaila's mother said emphatically at the end.
Samuel smiled with a knot. "That doesn't apply to me. I will only let go of my beautiful wife when I am bored, there will be nothing to separate us except for that reason."
Kaila looked up and stared at Samuel, dumbfounded by the rather insulting statement, Kaila's extended family members who were there also looked at her with judgmental eyes, Kaila's sister smiled wryly as if she had guessed it and so did Kaila's parents. They thought that Samuel was not as sincere a man as Kaila thought he was, and they were waiting for Samuel to agree to the marriage-for-money deal.
"But that will never happen. I never get bored when I'm next to Kaila, even to the end of the world, the last thing I want to see and hug is my wife. So you're wasting your time offering me that deal," Samuel said with a confident look on his face.
Kaila's parents chuckled angrily as they looked at Samuel. They could not accept that their offer had been so flatly rejected by their son-in-law.
"Keep your hands off from our daughter," Kaila's father said as he snatched Kaila away from Samuel. "Kaila will still marry the man of our choice! We've planned a lavish wedding with a wealthy man for her!"
Samuel just stared coldly at his father-in-law as Kaila struggled to keep her hands off him.
Kaila's mother said. "Don't touch my daughter after this. I don't want a poor son-in-law like you. Shameless, even though I was kind enough to offer you compensation."
"Such change is not worth our marriage and love. And I don't need your little money." Samuel said in a cold tone and deep voice.
Kaila's mother spat and gave Samuel a smug look. "Not worth it, you say? Hoho alright. You talk like you're a rich, powerful poor man. Then prove that you can form a business partnership with the Antama Corporation with a minimum investment of 50 million dollars in shares and ownership of a branch of the company as part of that partnership, and you can take Kaila back with you. If not, don't expect her to come back with you! I'll only give you 7 days, let's see how much an arrogant fool like you is capable of."
Kaila struggled and was about to return to Samuel's side but she was restrained by Kaila's father and dragged away to another room by the security guards at Kaila's house, Samuel who saw this was furious, he was very angry to see Kaila being used as a tool of trade and business by this family.
"You should be careful with your nonsense. You're already playing it. No need for 7 days, just shorten the time to one day. And enjoy the remaining day to breathe free air before your life is ruined. Wait for me until tomorrow, exactly 24 hours from now, and you will pay for your foolishness."
