Mathew POV I ran hard until I found the little cottage. My mate’s scent was all over the place but it was faded and the Buick she pulled away in was nowhere to be seen. I paced around her house agitated that she wasn’t there. Even in the small amount of time I saw her I knew she was perfect. I howled and waited an hour or so hoping she would come home. Finally it was dark and I decided to run to the pack house, dejected that my mate had not returned.
I went in to the pack house, Raphael saw me and said, “Mathew, my good friend and beta, why do you look so forlorn? Training went very well! Where have you been?”
“The pack doctor.. she’s my mate but she ran very quickly from me after we discovered it. I went to track her down but she did not go home like Aidan said she would. So I returned here instead.” I replied to him.
Raphael wrapped his arm around my shoulder and we began walking to the rooms we were provided with. “Ah do not worry, we don’t need doctors anyways. She surely cannot resist the mate bond for long, you will find your way back to each other. In the meantime just rest, maybe I’ll break your other arm on purpose just to give you an excuse to see her.” I chuckled and we parted ways. I slept horribly, tossing and turning. Wishing desperately to smell the scent of my mate once again.
Victoria POV When I arrived home, I could just barely smell the mistletoe scent of my mate. My heart dropped, was he here? If so, where was he? The smell is to faint, he is gone. Lia said dejectedly. Good, I thought to myself, I needed more time before I was ready to face him again. We will see him most likely in a couple days when we battle the rogues, Lia, don’t worry. I immediately crashed in bed after the exhausting day.
I woke up the next day refreshed and scared that I might run into my mate again. My days was booked with patients back to back so the likelihood was small for today. I decided to keep myself distracted as possible.
About midday, Crystal came up to me and said the last patient had rescheduled and they had to fill the opening with an emergency. Apparently something happened to Diamond Lake’s Beta. I shrugged and said “not a surprise.” I got through my day when the Beta was next, I learned that his name was Mathew. I just hoped he didn’t blow me off as quickly as his alpha did or I would very quickly kick him out.
I opened the door after reviewing his chart, apparently he broke his leg in training. Immediately the mistletoe hit my nose and I was stopped in my tracks. I looked and felt disgusting after a long day of patients and I just didn’t have the strength to deal with this now. “Please don’t rush out so quickly this time” Mathew says to me as I close the door behind me. “Only if you tell me you didn’t purposefully break your leg to have an excuse to find me” I reply quickly while assessing his leg. He winces as I line everything up properly. “Now,” I tell him as I feel the magic in his muscles and bones realigning and healing. I truly love what I do and wouldn’t give it up for the world.
“Wow, thank you doc. Your hands sure know what they’re doing.” Mathew says coyly as he sits up. I take off my gloves and roll my eyes. “Well I do have quite a bit of experience doing this.”
I’m just barely out of arms reach and I notice my palms are beginning to sweat and my heart beat is beginning to pick up pace. “Please walk for me, I must assess everything is working properly” Mathew jumps up from the bed and stretches his arms up and I see the deep V from his muscles going down to his grey sweatpants. He walks back in forth in the exam room, "good as new" he says then smiles a thousand watt smile at me. He walks over in front of the door and turns around toward me, blocking the way out. "Don't want you running out on me again without letting me formally introduce myself. I am Mathew, Beta of the Diamond Lake Pack." He holds out his hand and I bite my lip nervous. I shake his hand and say, "Victoria, pack doctor of Blood Moon pack." I feel the sparks at his touch and my breath catches.
"No need to be nervous, we are mates after all." He drops my hand and starts to walk toward me. I step back out of instinct, "I'm not nervous, its been a long day of patients and I am ready to go home. You seem to well healed, you are free to leave and return home. If you will excuse me I have to finish my responsibilities." He put his hands in the air in surrender and said, "at least let me take you to dinner and show you I'm not really an asshole."
"If I say yes, will you let me leave my exam room?"
"Maybe."
I rolled my eyes and mumbled, "fine" as I brushed past him to go to my office. Feeling the faintest spark as I did so.
