Chapter six

960 Words
Victoria POV     Like a dog, Mathew followed me to my office two steps behind me. I sat down and said, "get out so I can finish, you can wait in the lobby like everyone else." He pouted and asked, "you don't have a back door that you're gonna run out of, do you?"     "I wouldn't tell you even if I did have one."     He chuckled and walked away, purposely swaying his ass so I would look at it. I finished my charts for that day and leaned back in my chair. Was I ready for this? Did I really want to give him a chance? Yes, yes you do. He is mate. The moon goddess chose him for a reason Lia chides at me. I work up my nerve and turn off my computer and lock up my office. Everyone is gone and all the lights are off except in the lobby where Mathew is waiting for me.     "Man, I hoped you might give up after waiting so long, darn!" I tease as wake him up from the nap he was taking. Quickly he stands and makes his way over, "I have already waited years to find you, I can wait a little more." Did he just smolder at me? He definitely did. This man thinks he is just going to sweep me off my feet and I am going to fall head over heels for him. Well no sir, I am gonna make him earn his way into my heart. Mate or not.  Mathew POV     I couldn't tell what Victoria was thinking, I was trying so hard to act cool and collected when I just wanted to hold her in my arms and ravage her. Why was she playing hard to get? We're mates, this shouldn't be a difficult situation. I could care for her for all my days and she would never have to lift a finger again. "Since I am unfamiliar with the area, could you tell me your favorite place to eat?"     "Campfire grill and bar is my favorite and a community favorite to most. Follow me and we can head there."     "Do you always work this late? I would be starving everyday if I got off at this time everyday."     "I keep a snack drawer in my office to keep up my blood sugar throughout the day. But I don't usually work this late. I am trying to get ahead so that I am able to stay afloat, especially with the upcoming battle." We walk to her car and I try to walk over and open her door for her. She beats me to it and motions me to get in the passenger seat. We drive down to the bar in heavy silence. The mate bond palpable in the air.      We get seated in a booth in the corner and the waitress stops by with a flirty look on her face, batting her eyelashes at me. "You're new, would you like hear our specials?" I look at Victoria and say, "I will have whatever she is having."      The waitress finally looks over to Victoria and Victoria says, "John knows my usual, go tell him and get out of his area please." The waitress quickly scurries away with her head down and her cheeks red with embarrassment. "Somebody feeling jealous?" I ask and almost immediately regret it as Victoria stares me down and points her finger at me, "listen mister, I have got on just fine without you for 11 years and I don't need you now. So, don't come prancing in like you are going to save me or swoon me or whatever.  I would much rather be curled up with a book at home than be here right now." I lift my hands in surrender and apologize.     "I have waited a long time to find you as well, please just give me a chance. I don't want to hurt you, please believe me." I could tell she was very stubborn but man did she look cute when she was mad. I just need to find a way to earn her trust somehow. Her shoulders relaxed and she finally leaned back in the booth. "I'm sorry for snapping, its been an exhausting week and I like my life and I'm not sure I want it to change."      "Would you like to get the food to go and then relax at home instead of being here?" I ask her. She thinks for a moment and says, "I appreciate the offer but I would rather stay in public place for now with you so the mate bond doesn't make us rip our pants off too quickly." I chuckle and lean forward, "That does sound tempting, I would like to get to know you, please give me that chance."     "Alright, but you go first because I don't feel like talking yet." Shortly after a waiter dropped two beers off at the table and Victoria looked at the waiter and said, "Keep 'em coming, John." He nodded and left the table. Victoria took her beer and gulped about half of it down, I opened my mouth but she cut me off and said, "No, I am not nervous or something silly like that. I. Am. Exhausted. I'm just trying to relax a little." I shut my mouth quickly and drank my beer and shared about my family, friends, etc. The evening went on really quickly, I felt relaxed so close to my mate. An hour had passed and I said, "Enough about me, I want to hear about you." She yawned very big and stretched her arms behind her and said, "Maybe next time" she winked and pulled cash out of purse and began to walk out the door.
