CHAPTER 7 — THE KEEP THAT WATCHES

1176 Words
Aria woke before sunrise. For a long moment she lay still, staring at the faint light spilling across the ceiling, trying to understand why her heart was already racing. Then memory hit her like a fist: Kael’s mouth on hers. His hands on her skin. The bond flaring like fire in her bones. She dragged a hand over her face. “Stupid. Stupid bond.” Her lips still tingled. And that was the problem. A soft knock sounded, and Mira slipped into the room with a tray. “You’re awake early.” “I couldn’t sleep.” Mira’s eyebrows lifted just slightly. “The Keep tends to have that effect on newcomers. It watches you.” Aria swallowed. “Watches?” “You’ll understand soon.” Mira set the tray down. “Eat. The King expects you outside.” “Why?” “For training.” Aria blinked. “Training?” Mira nodded. “He wants you ready. The Keep isn’t kind to the weak.” Aria’s jaw tightened, but she didn’t argue. She dressed quickly in the fitted black tunic and boots Mira provided — practical clothing, not court silk. She followed Mira through winding hallways until they stepped into the main courtyard. The Keep looked different in daylight. Brighter. Sharper. Less forgiving. Wolves trained in the open rings, claws clashing, muscles flexing, bodies shifting mid-movement. Aria’s heart raced at the intensity of it. Kael stood in the center ring, arms crossed, watching two warriors spar. He didn’t look at her at first. He didn’t need to. She could feel the moment he sensed her—his aura brushed against hers like a warm, dangerous wind. When he finally turned, his golden gaze swept over her quietly, lingering a little too long on her collarbone, the place his mouth had been last night. Heat crawled up her throat. “Come here,” he said. Not a command. A pull. Aria stepped into the ring, ignoring the curious stares from every direction. “Why am I training?” she asked. Kael’s eyes stayed on hers. “Because the Keep will test you. I’d rather you not die.” “Oh. Sweet.” A flicker—almost a smile. “Shift.” Aria stiffened. “Here? In front of everyone?” Kael stepped closer, voice lowering. “You shift beautifully. And you need control.” Her wolf stirred beneath her skin at his tone. Aria swallowed hard and let it rise. The shift came fast—bones reshaping, fur pushing through skin, senses sharpening. When her eyes opened again, the world was sharper, clearer, louder. She could smell Kael from six feet away—forest, fire, something darker that made her wolf’s tail lift unconsciously. Kael crouched in front of her wolf form. “Good,” he murmured. “Again.” She lunged at him. Instinct. Pressure. Frustration. Kael moved like smoke—sidestepping, redirecting her, teaching her without striking her. She attacked again. And again. Each time he caught her, flipped her, nudged her away. Not cruel. Controlled. On the fifth attempt, she shocked him—twisting midair and nearly knocking him off balance. His eyes flashed bright gold. “Better.” Aria’s wolf panted, chest heaving, fur bristling. Her pulse was wild. Because training with him wasn’t just physical. It was something else too. Something that made her wolf ache. “Shift back,” Kael said quietly. Her wolf hesitated. Bond fire rolled through her veins. She forced the shift, skin replacing fur, body trembling. Kael was already stripping off his coat and wrapping it around her shoulders, blocking the view of the courtyard. His hands stayed there for a beat too long. Aria’s breath hitched. “Your control is improving,” he murmured. “You flipped me like a pup.” “You flipped me back.” “I didn’t flip you.” “You almost did.” She swallowed. “Almost isn’t—” Kael stepped closer, voice dropping to a soft, dangerous edge. “Almost means it’s coming.” Her heart slammed against her ribs. Before she could respond, a smooth voice interrupted: “Well. This is… intimate.” Aria stiffened. Seraphine. The woman from court. Red lips. Silk voice. Threat wrapped in beauty. She approached slowly, gaze unreadable. “My King,” she said politely, then turned her eyes on Aria. “I thought I’d meet the famous mate again.” Aria didn’t flinch. Kael didn’t look at Seraphine. Not once. “State your purpose,” he said. Seraphine smiled tightly. “I came to welcome her. The Keep can be overwhelming.” Aria lifted her chin. “I’m managing.” “Are you?” Seraphine asked sweetly. “Highstone doesn’t forgive mistakes.” Kael’s aura darkened instantly. “Leave,” he said. Seraphine didn’t move. “You were never territorial before her.” Kael finally turned his head. The entire courtyard went still. “This is not territorial.” His voice was absolute. “This is warning.” Seraphine’s smile faltered. Kael stepped slightly in front of Aria—protective without touching her. “If you insult her again,” he said quietly, “you’ll find out the difference.” Seraphine bowed stiffly and left. Aria exhaled shakily. “You didn’t have to do that.” Kael looked at her then—really looked—with something fierce and unguarded under the gold of his eyes. “Yes,” he said simply. “I did.” Aria’s pulse stumbled. His gaze dropped to her wrist beneath the cuff. “Your wolf reacts faster when you’re angry.” She pulled the coat tighter around herself. “My wolf reacts faster around you.” His jaw flexed. “Good.” “Not good,” she whispered. Kael stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek with his thumb. The touch was soft. Dangerous. “You think feeling me is weakness.” “It is.” “No,” he said. “It’s instinct.” Her breath trembled. He leaned in—not kissing her, but close enough that she felt the words against her skin. “Instinct keeps you alive. Feel it. Use it.” Her throat tightened. “Kael…” He stepped back just a fraction. “Training is done for now,” he said. “Come. There’s something I want to show you.” “What?” “The Keep’s oldest wing.” Aria frowned. “Why?” His eyes darkened. “Because your mark reacted to it last night.” Her skin went cold. “My what?” “The sealed wing,” Kael continued. “It’s tied to old blood. Old magic.” He held out his hand to her. Not a command. A choice. “Come with me, Aria,” he said quietly. “Let me show you what this place remembers.” Her heart thundered. Her wolf pressed against her skin. And Aria placed her hand in his. Because whatever waited in that sealed wing… it was tied to her. And Kael knew it.
