CHAPTER 5
THE NEXT MORNING
The conference room on the 42nd floor of Kane Tower was built for power. A table of polished black marble stretched twenty feet. A screen the size of a movie theater hung at the wall.
Alex sat at the head beside Thomas, who was arranging folders.
The door opened. Diane Williams entered first. She saw Alex and froze.
"What is he doing here?"
Thomas stood. "Mrs. Williams. Mr. Carter is here at my invitation. You may sit, or you can excuse yourself through the door."
Diane's jaw clenched for a while before taking her seat at the far end of the table.
Emma entered with Ryan's hand possessive on her back. She wore black. Her eyes found Alex and widened.
"Alex? Why are you here?"
Ryan's face went red. "That's the con artist from last night—"
"Sit. Down." Thomas growled.
They sat. Lauren came in looking miserable and mouthed sorry to Alex before sliding into a chair.
Then Logan Kane walked in, expensive suit, confident stride. He saw Alex and faltered.
"Wright." His voice was tight. "Why is my father's charity case sitting at this table?"
"Everything will be explained. Please sit, Mr. kane."
Logan sat across from Alex, staring like he could make him disappear.
Board members and lawyers kept pouring in. Finally, a technician gave Thomas a thumbs up. "We're live in five."
Diane straightened her jacket. Emma smoothed her hair. None of them understood what was about to happen.
"We're live."
Thomas looked at the camera. "Good afternoon. I am Thomas Wright, executor of the estate of Richard Kane. This reading is being broadcast globally to an estimated 2.3 billion viewers. What you're about to witness is unprecedented."
He paused.
"Richard Kane passed away two weeks ago, leaving an estate valued at $1.2 trillion. His will contains... unconventional provisions. For the past three year, an experiment was conducted at his direction. A test of character for his biological son, Alexander Carter."
Every head in the room snapped toward Alex.
Emma's lips parted. Her voice came out barely audible. "Alex... you're his son?"
"The test," Thomas continued. "Was simple... could a man raised with nothing, endure cruelty, maintain his integrit? The footage you're about to see document three years of Alex's life. Every moment was recorded. What you will see will determine who inherits the kane fortune."
The lights dimmed and the screen flickered.
First image: Alex standing in a kitchen, eating alone. Through the doorway, the family sat at a dinner. Diane's voice: "Don't you dare bring that garbage near us. You eat where the help eats."
Emma looked away from the screen.
The footage continued. Alex on his hands and knees scrubbing floors. Curling into a thin blanket in the garage. Diane's insults. Emma growing distant. Ryan appearing at dinners while Alex served. The anniversary party. The blessing ceremony. The pregnancy announcement. Alex's belonging on the lawn.
Silence filled the room.
Then a new footage appeared. Diane at a bank accepting a check. The date stamp reads three years earlier. A voice-over played: "Yes, I understand. I'm to house him as part of executive screening purposes."
Diane lurched forward in her chair. "That was a legitimate arrangement! I was told this was—"
"You were paid fifty thousand dollars monthly. Thomas muttered. "By Richard Kane's estate. But you were never told to destroy his son! Were you?.
Diane kept mute instantly.
More footage. Ryan in a lawyer's office, signing papers. The lawyer's voice: "Your startup will be funded entirely by kane industries subsidiaries."
Ryan's face went slack. "I built my company from nothing—"
"You built nothing, Mr. Fletcher. Every dollar in your account came from Richard Kane."
Emma turned to stare at Ryan like she'd never seen him before.
New footage. Three years ago. Richard Kane's office. Logan sat across the desk from him.
Richard's voice was measured and clear. "Logan, you have a brother. His name is Alexander. He's undergoing a three-year character test. If he maintains integrity throughout, he will inherits everything. Your role is to stay silent. Do nothing to help or hurt him."
Logan on screen, voice bitter: "Yes. I understand."
The footage jumped forward. Different dates. Logan in an office watching surveillance monitors. All showing Alex suffering. Logan watching it all, his face was expressionless.
Present-day Logan stood on his feet. "I was told to stay out of it! I followed instructions exactly!"
"You watched your brother suffer for three year,"
Thomas's voice carried across the room. "You Knew the truth who he was, and you chose silence because you hoped he'd fail. That is the measure of your character, Logan."
Logan sank back into his chair.
The screen went dark.
Thomas turned to face the cameras again. "For three year, Alexwas pushed past human endurance. He had every justification to steal, to lie. Instead, he worked honestly. He remained faithful to a wife who betrayed him. He helped others despite having nothing himself. Never compromised his principles. That is why he inherits. Not because of his bloodline."
He picked up the will.
"Alex demonstrated unwavering integrity. He passed every measure."
Thomas looked at Alex.
"Therefore, I hereby declare Alexander Carter the sole heir of the Kane estate. All assets, companies, properties. One point two trillion dollars. Effective immediately."
For a brief second, there was only Silence.
Then chaos.
Diane flared up. "This is fraud! I'll contest this in every court—"
"You'll pay back the $600,000 you owe, Mrs. Williams. That monthly payment was structured as a loan. It's due immediately."
The color drained from her face.
Ryan stood, voice rising. "Then my company is still mine—"
"Your company dissolves today, Mr Fletcher. You built nothing."
Emma didn't stand. She just stared at Alex, her voice breaking. "You knew. Last night at the club. You already knew what I'd thrown away."
Alex spoke for the first time since the footage began. His voice was quiet and calm.
"No, Emma. I found out yesterday. One day after you told me I'd never be enough. But you know what? The man you married three years ago would have forgiven you. That man died on our anniversary." He met her eyes. "I'm someone else now."
Emma's face crumpled.
Alex stood. "Are we finished here?"
"We are, Mr. Kane."
Alex walked toward the door. At the threshold, he looked back.
"I was tested to see if I'd stay human. You were tested to see if you had any humanity when you taught no one was watching." He paused. "I passed. You didn't. That's the only difference that matters."
He walked out.
Behind him, Diane's voice rose to a scream as she grabbed at lawyers. Ryan paced the room, phone pressed to his ear, making desperate calls. Emma sat frozen in her chair, tears running silently down her face. Logan stared at the table, watching his entire world crumble.
Outside in the hallway, Thomas caught up. "How do you feel?"
Alex thought about Emma's tears. Logan's shame. Diane's panic. Ryan's desperation.
"Free," he said.
And for the first time in three years. He was.
