Adrian’s POV
BACK TO THE PRESENT
Five months.
That was how long I tried to make things work out with Evelyn.
Five months of pretending.
Five months of planning dates, forcing conversations and affections.
I couldn’t do it anymore.
“But you promised we’d make things work out”.
Her voice echoed in my head.
My mind went back to the night we broke up.
She cried her eyes out.
She trembled because of crying.
I watched her cry, I couldn’t do anything.
I don’t love her.
And I don’t blame her.
I caused her pain.
I look down at the pile of papers on my desk waiting to be signed.
I leaned back on my chair and pressed my temples with my hand.
“Today is going to be a long day”. I sighed.
Beep, beep
My phone rings and I pick it up to see my best friend's name flashing across the screen.
“Bro, how are you?”. My best friend, Nicholas says from the other end.
“I’m okay, I’ve just been busy all morning”
“Tomorrow is your birthday. Any plans?” Nicholas asks.
“You know I don’t really care about my birthday”.
“I know, but you turn 31 tomorrow. It should be celebrated”.
“I don’t kn..”
“We are going to the club tomorrow whether you like it or not”. Nicholas cuts me short.
I roll my eyes.
He can be very persistent.
“Fine, whatever”. I finally agree.
“Good. I’ll talk to you later bro”. He says before he ends the call.
My birthday has never meant much to me.
It was just another day to remind me that my life belonged to everyone but me.
But this year it was different.
Maybe because I was finally free from Evelyn.
Or so I thought.
LATER THAT EVENING
I sat across from my dad at the dining table where he discussed business as though it were a birthday party.
“You’ve been doing so well in the company lately”. My dad praised me.
“Oh, thank you dad”.
“But there’s still one more issue”. My dad said with a frown on his face.
“What’s that?”
“Marriage”.
I sighed.
I knew that’s what he was going to say.
He always finds a way to bring it up.
“Dad, I'm not ready for marriage”. I roll my eyes as I stab my steak with my fork.
“The board thinks it’s time you get married”
“What’s my business with what the board thinks?”
My dad takes a sip of his wine.
“Adrian, you are thirty-one. You’re not getting any younger”.
I leaned back on my chair.
“You saw how things ended with Evelyn”.
“I know and there are other girls out there”
My jaw tightened and I clenched my fist.
“Dad..”
“You can’t make decisions solely based on your emotions”.
I roll my eyes.
“I’ve heard that speech before”.
“And you still don’t want to listen”.
I stood up.
I’m tired of always having this conversation.
“I’ve had enough”.
“Sit down!” My dad’s voice echoed in the room.
“Honey, please calm down”. My mum tries to calm my father down.
“Catherine, listen to what your son is saying. He doesn’t want to get married”. My dad says furiously.
My mum turns to me with a sad look on her face.
“Son, I think your dad is right”
“Mum please, I don’t want to talk about this”.
“Sit down now!” My father orders again.
I sigh and have my seat.
As much as I hate listening to my father, he was still my father.
But I’m not ready for marriage.
The room was quiet for some time before my father broke the silence.
“Any plans for your birthday tomorrow?”
“I’m going to the club with Nicholas”. I simply replied.
“And how did he convince you to do that?”. My dad laughed.
I rolled my eyes and laughed with him.
THE NEXT DAY
It was the night of my birthday and I was getting ready to go to the club with Nicholas.
“Bro, don’t wear that shirt. You’re not going for a business meeting”. Nicholas said as he saw the shirt I brought out.
“Are you going to tell me what to wear on my birthday?”. I asked with one of my eyebrows raised.
“Whatever”. He says as he rolls his head.
We stepped out of my house and entered my car.
“Driver , take us to Noir Lounge and Club”. I instructed my driver and he simply nodded in response.
Noir Lounge and Club was one of the most expensive clubs in the city.
As we got closer to the club, I began to rethink my decision.
I hate public places.
Especially places with loud music and drunk people.
We finally got to the club and we made our way to the private booth we had already reserved.
“You need to get laid,” Nicholas says bluntly.
I nearly choked on my drink.
“I don’t want to get laid”
“When was the last time you slept with a woman?”. Nicholas asked me.
I couldn’t answer.
I haven’t slept with anyone since I broke up with Evelyn.
“You can’t even answer”.
“Anyways, let’s make a toast”. Nicholas continues as he raises his glass.
“Toast for?” I ask as I also raise my glass.
“Cheers to being single”. He says and clicks his glass with mine.
I roll my eyes.
“You’re not single”. I say.
“Yes, but you are”. He laughs out.
I roll my eyes again for the one millionth time today.
I watched as the strippers danced and moved their bodies.
They were good.
I couldn’t lie about that.
They wore clothes that were made to catch the attention of people.
But one in particular caught my attention.
She had wavy black hair and hazel colored eyes.
I watched her make her way to the pole.
She moved according to the rhythm of the music.
Everyone was looking at her.
Including me.
“Do you like her?”. Nicholas asked me.
I ignored him.
My eyes remained fixed on her.
She was beautiful.
"Pole dancing never felt better "
I said to myself...
I sat in the private booth, with my gaze fixed directly on the lady on the pole moving effortlessly like she owned the stage.
"And of course she does" I thought.
"I have seen thousands of strippers but this one feels different " I muttered.
Something in me had awakened.
Lust?.
It felt so, because the hair on my body stood like they were waiting for something.
I was already thinking of my d**k sliding into her wet p***y as her body moved beneath the dim red light.
I felt something I have never felt before.
"This is the first time I have felt like this in a long time".
I want her.
I turned towards Nicholas.
"I want her".
"The dancer".
Nicholas followed my gaze and immediately shook his head.
"Adrian, Strippers aren't allowed to sleep with clients, they have other women for that".
I looked at her again.
"An exception must be made for me," I said to my friend sitting beside me.
Nicholas stood up and headed towards where he'd talk to the people in charge.
I looked back at the stage as soon as Nicholas stood up.
She was still dancing.
But this time, I noticed something.
She wasn’t looking at the crowd.
She wasn’t looking at the men throwing money at her.
She was looking at me.
Our eyes met.
And they were the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen.
I stared directly into her hazel eyes and it felt like the world suddenly stopped moving.
