Two Alphas

"WHERE IN ALL THE HELLS HAVE YOU BEEN, BRUJA?!" I cringe at the volume of which my best friend just shouted into the smartphone in my hand. After giving them my analysis of our situation, Joey finally handed me his phone, much to the outrage of Eric. Thanking him quickly, I ignored the both of them, walked into the adjacent room, and began to dial Cassie's number. It's one of those living room plus dining room plus kitchen areas, but the amount of space in it could fit two of each. Remembering the glass shattering sounds and feeling the soles of my bare feet on the slightly worn carpet, I stayed clear of the kitchen and went to lean against the back of a large sectional. That way, I could keep an eye on the two guys while waiting for my friend to pick up. Eric has started cleaning up what looks like a broken mug, and Joey just sat down on a stool that had been knocked over earlier. They are also keeping their eyes on me, but I'm more focused on my ringing eardrum at the moment. "I know, I know. I'm really sorry that I-" "You know I actually thought you drove off the road and died in a ditch alone somewhere?!" Called it. "Again, I'm really sorry. I know I've been missing for three days-" "Yeah, THREE WHOLE f*****g DAYS!! Do you know how close we were to calling a search party on you?! Why didn't you call us?" Again, called it. "My phone died, and I just woke up, so Joey gave me his phone-" Two identical growls from across the room remind me I'm not alone. Well, if they didn't want me knowing their names, they shouldn't have kept saying them out loud. I roll my eyes at the morons, but my focus is brought back to the device in my hand when Cassie asks "Joey? Who's Joey?" Fuck. What do I even tell her? I just wanted her to know I was alright, but now I need some time to come up with a story that is believable. I look at the two guys as they stare at me; Joey's gaze is unreadable, while Eric's is a truckload of emotions, mainly anger. How can two guys be so different and yet so similar? "Ali? You still there?" Right. Back to the issue at had. "Yeah, sorry. Listen, do you think your fam would mind me coming over tonight? Then I can explain things to everyone at the same time while getting your help trying to make a plan on what to tell my father." The boys stiffen and Joey stands up. "Absolutely not. You can't leave-" I stop him with a finger and continue my conversation. "I'll be bringing two guys who can also fill in a few holes, if that's okay." "Ali, why do you even ask? Of course my family wants to see you. Mom's been worried sick, just like me. And you know Dylan has been sulking and panicking. When do you wanna come by?" While finalizing plans with Cassie, a glaring match continues between the three of us. A tense aura fills the room, almost like a suffocating fog, and I know they aren't happy. But I have to do something, and it seems the compromise of them come along has appeased them enough to let me finish the call. They probably were just worried I'd bolt without helping fix this and leave them in the state they're in. Trust me, I don't want these things on my shoulders any more than you two do. Once we have details sorted out, and Cassie makes sure I'm okay a few hundred times, I say my goodbye and hang up. Apparently, that was the cue Mister Hothead was waiting for. "Are you serious right now?" Eric immediately shouts. "We're going over you friend's house and fixing your problems, but not ours?! How selfish are you, you freaking bi-" I was fully prepared for his retaliation, but him stopping from calling me a b***h surprised me. Is that cause of the bond? Whatever it is, it pisses him off enough that he growls loudly and throws another mug at the opposite wall. Guess there's more glass now. Trying to relax a bit, I sigh and explain my reasoning. "I just wanted to make sure my friend and her family weren't freaking out anymore. Getting help tonight on how to confront my father and boss with being MIA for three days is a plus, but one I would've dealt with eventually. I needed to buy some time so we can come up with a plausible story for the Santiagos, as I'm pretty sure you don't want me telling people you were trying to kill me when we met, and you don't want me out of your sight until we fix this, so that was the best I could do." Once I'm finished, I sigh and look back at Eric. "So, what about you two?" Furrowing his brows a little, he asks "What about us?" I roll my eyes and snort. "You guys have been missing for three days too, haven't you? I doubt you left me alone or with someone else while I was out. How do you wanna handle your disappearances?" Eric is stunned and looks down at the floor almost instantly, a little red coming to his cheeks. It's Joey that answers my question. "Actually, although we have been here this whole time, our Betas have been handling everything for us." They had mentioned something like that while they were talking before I slammed the door. But I shake my head, still not understanding. "What are Betas? And what do they have to do with you guys being AWOL? Are they your bosses or something?" "Wow, you really don't know anything about werewolves, huh?" Eric scoffs at me once again. I squint at him, but he just rolls his eyes. "Werewolves have ranks, just like real wolves. Most werewolves are just your standard wolf, but there are some that are more or less powerful because their wolf gene is weaker or stronger. "There are Omegas. They are barely werewolves, and super weak. But because of that, they don't really feel the chain-of-command that all other wolves do. It makes them hard to control. Very few Packs have any as members, and if they do, they only make up a small fraction of their numbers. "Then there are Betas. They are the opposite of Omegas. They are stronger, and super loyal to their Packs. They're like the protectors and immediate enforcers of order. This makes them annoying, sometimes, but they really are a huge help." "And then," Joey begins, continuing where Eric left off, "There are Alphas. Werewolves that have so much of the wolf gene that others can't even hope to disobey them. Whatever they say goes. They are the true leaders of the Packs, and they are very territorial. Because of that, most Packs only have one Alpha leading at a time. All others either remain submissive to the main Alpha, or they're banished from the Pack." I look between the two of them, feeling that I understand what Joey means by his explanation. But I have to know for sure. "You said 'most'?" Eric walks over to Joey and puts his arm around his waist, which Joey matches perfectly. It's so smooth, so easy, that I know deep down inside it has been done countless other times. "That's cause our Pack is different. We're the two Main Alphas of the Dual Pack."
