Huffing, Kai levered his chin from one hand to the other. His elbow was propped atop the bar, his phone taunting him with its unchanging screen no matter how many times he tapped it back to life. Kirin wasn’t answering his phone calls or messages. The drummer had disappeared shortly after the game. He hadn’t even stuck around to congratulate Yoshimi on her team’s hard-won victory. Meanwhile, Yoshimi had dashed Kai’s plans to treat her to something special with a sheepish apology that she and the team would be celebrating over pizza and beer. He was welcome to join them, of course, but without Kirin to provide some backup, he felt too out of his element among a horde of female athletes, so he’d taken a rain check and promised her a treat soon.
