Chapter Nine

358 Words
Selena awoke with a start, to the beeping sound of several machines. Clarity came once she turned her head to observe her surroundings. The white walls, slim bed and surrounding monitors told her she was in a hospital. "Honey, you're awake!" Selena's mum rushed to her side from a chair by the side of the room. Her face was full of concern as she squeezed her palm softly. "Oh, honey. Thank goodness you're awake. You took a pretty nasty fall." Her mum leaned in and squeezed her in a relieved hug. "Fall?" Selena wondered. "Where did I fall from?" Her thoughts were still mixed up. She couldn't really decipher where her reality stopped and where her dreams began. There was no way of telling how much of my immediate past experiences were real. "You remember what happened, right?" Her mum asked, looking at her like she was supposed to say something she was yet to say. Selena observed her, not quite sure what the right response to her question was. She remembered a lot of things but wasn't sure which of her memories actually took place in reality. "I'm so sorry about your roommate, Alex." Her mum continued. "So, that bit is true. Alex is really dead." Tears welled up in Selena's eyes, spilling down her cheeks shortly after. She felt like an invisible force was squeezing her heart. Her lungs weren't faring much better either. She felt like the air around her was thinning and she continued to cry her eyes out. Her mum hugged her again, squeezing on my shoulders ever so slightly. "I didn't mean to upset you, honey." She consoled her. Selena blinked several times, trying to dismiss the image of Alex's dead body from her mind. It didn't help. Her vision was beginning to blur, and she heard the monitors beeping faster – but it sounded like the sound came from a distance. Selena heard the muffled voice of someone else in the room but couldn't make out who it was. Shortly after, everything went calm. The hospital scene was gone, and she was back in the 1870s bedroom she found herself before.
