Chapter 4 – What the Heart Refuses to Forget

626 Words
She didn’t sleep well that night. Every time she closed her eyes, memories returned—his voice, his eyes, the way her heart reacted when she least expected it to. She rolled onto her side, pressing a pillow to her chest, trying to quiet the storm inside her. Why did everything feel so wrong… and yet so right? Morning came too quickly. She got dressed and left her room early, hoping the day would distract her. But distraction was impossible when her mind was already divided. The CEO’s words echoed in her head. Because I couldn’t stop thinking about you. She hated that it still affected her. Hated that after everything—the distance, the coldness, the breakup—he still had this power over her heart. She was halfway down the corridor when she heard her name. “Wait.” She turned. He stood there, leaning casually against the wall, suit flawless as always, expression calm—but his eyes were different. Softer. Unguarded. “Can we talk?” he asked. She hesitated. Every instinct told her to say no. But another part of her—the part that still cared—nodded. They stepped into a quiet corner, away from everyone else. “I didn’t mean to make things awkward yesterday,” he said. “But seeing you with him caught me off guard.” She crossed her arms. “You don’t get to be jealous.” A faint smile tugged at his lips. “You’re right. I don’t.” Then his smile faded. “But I still am.” Her breath caught. “You ended things,” she reminded him. “You made it clear you didn’t want this.” “I was wrong,” he said quietly. Those three words hit harder than any apology. She stared at him, heart racing. “You can’t just say that and expect everything to be okay.” “I don’t,” he replied. “I just needed you to know.” For a moment, the world seemed to narrow—just the two of them, suspended in unfinished feelings and unspoken truths. Then a voice interrupted. “She’s been looking for you.” Her stepbrother stood a few feet away, eyes sharp, posture tense. He’d heard enough. She turned toward him instinctively, and the CEO noticed. The shift was subtle, but unmistakable. “I’ll give you space,” the CEO said after a pause, his gaze lingering on her face. “But don’t forget… what we had was real.” He walked away, leaving silence behind. Her stepbrother approached slowly. “Are you okay?” She nodded, though her heart felt anything but steady. “I think so.” He studied her face, as if trying to read every emotion she wasn’t saying out loud. “You don’t have to face him alone.” She looked up at him. “Why do you care so much?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. He froze. Then, with a quiet honesty that scared her, he said, “Because I always have.” The truth in his voice made her chest ache. This wasn’t just about love anymore. It was about history. About loyalty. About hearts that refused to let go. And standing between them, she wondered—how long before one of them asked her to choose? --- 💬 Author’s Note (A/N) – Chapter 4 Oof… feelings are getting real now 😮‍💨💔 The past is knocking, and the present is pulling hard.
