Chapter 1

Beep. Beep. Beep. The heart monitor had a steady rhythm, droning on in the silence of the room. Anise lay in the pack hospital, her face shoulder and back wrapped in gauze. She had been unconscious for 3 days and her wounds weren't healing like they should, thanks to the silver. They had discovered that the rogues claws had not only been coated in silver but wolfsbane and nightshade. These powerful poisons had taken their toll on Anise and her wolf. The long-lasting effects were unknown and wouldn't be known until she woke up. Alpha Jake and Luna Solana had visited her daily. Their pups had been begging nonstop to see Anise and had been caught trying to sneak in more than once. Anises POV Ugh. What is that noise? I wish it would go away so I could get some sleep... No little one, we need to wake up. Follow the noise Anise, wake up. We have slept for long enough. Amara? What happened? Why does my head hurt so bad? Why can't I open my eyes? What's going on. I start to panic a bit amd the steady beeping of the heart monitor rises. Calm down little one! Breathe, we are OK now. We have been asleep for a while. What is the last thing you remember? Focus! I remember we had gone with the Alpha and Luna and their pups to the lake for them to have a family day...Suddenly everything comes flooding back, the weird feeling, the attack, the searing pain and smell of burning flesh, my burning flesh. Yes little one! Now I need you to focus amd open your eyes. We need to wake up now, we need to check on our friends and make sure the Alpha and his family are alright and we need to wake up, I've done as much healing as I can but our injuries were bad. We need to wake up so we can find out how bad it is. Slowly I focus on the beeping of the monitor, I hear voices and smell my father asking the doctor what is going on. I crack my eyes open and immediately scrunch them closed again letting out a groan. D*mn the lights are bright. All sound in the room stops and I feel my mother's hand gently petting my head like she did when I was a little girl. "Wake up Annie, show me your eyes my girl." Hearing my mother's nickname for me and the concern in her voice makes me force my eyes open ignoring the pounding in my head. I see my mother's face with tears in her eyes, my father gripping the bedrail so tightly his knuckles are white and the doctor leaning over me trying to assess me. "Hi." I say weakly and try to smile but immediately regret it when there is a sharp pain in my cheek. I inhale sharply and close my eyes against the pain. "Anise, I wouldn't move your face too much, and don't try to sit up please. Your wounds weren't healing quickly enough and we had to stitch them together. Your wolf has done what she can but we don't know how long it will take to heal." The pack doctor says. "What happened? Why am I not healing?" I ask talking slowly, feeling like my mouth is going to crack open with how dry it is. "You saved our lives is what happened and I will forever be indebted to you." Alpha Jake says as he walked into the room. "Don't let me interrupt doctor, please continue." The pack doctor looks at me and I give him a slight nod before he continues. "Well, we know that the rogues claws were coated is sliver, wolfsbane, and deadly nightshade. I'm actually amazed that you are awake right now as we were expecting you to be in a coma for a while with the various poisons in your body. I would like to do more bloodwork and keep you at least for the rest of the week but maybe longer so we can monitor your wounds for infection since they aren't healing at a normal rate. I will send a nurse to draw blood and we will see about getting you some food and water now that you are awake. I would like to keep visitors to only a few at a time for now if you all don't mind." With a pointed look at the others in the room he turns and leaves. I stare blankly at the door trying to process all of the information just given to me. I look at my mom, dad and Alpha Jake as they stare at me waiting for me to ask questions or talk. My dad has lossened his grip on the bedrail, but only slightly and my mom has silent tears streaming down her face. Alpha Jake is standing at the foot of my bed with gratitude written across his face. I am about to ask my mom to press the nurse button so I can ask to sit up when a nurse with a tray of tube's and needles comes in. She bows her head to the others in the room then focuses her attention on me. "Hi, Anise. I'm nurse Ava, I'm here to draw some blood." I nod at her and manage to croak out "Can I sit up for a bit? I know the doctor said I should try to stay still but I just don't want to lay flat on my back and promise I won't move out of bed." I use my best puppy eyes and she returns a sympathetic gaze. "Let me run out really quick and see if I can catch the doctor. If he says it's ok then I will grab another nurse and be right back in to help you." With a grateful sigh I thank her as she walks out the door. I look at Alpha Jake and ask, "Are Luna Solana and the pups ok? Everything is still a bit fuzzy from the attack." "Yes they are fine! The pups are a little shook up and worried about you, they've even tried to sneak in a few times to see you but the doctor didn't think that was a good idea until you woke up. They will be very happy to hear you are awake but I have a feeling they won't stop asking to see you for the rest of the day. Solana and I agreed that we would keep them at bay for a day or two longer when the doctor linked us and told us that you were showing signs of waking. We wanted to give your family time to see you and spend time with you first before you are bombarded with questions from 3 unruly 5 year olds." He smiled with the corners of his eyes crinkling thinking about their antics and I couldn't help but smile back, even though it hurt a bit. "Alpha Jake, I think they have waited long enough to see me. And I don't think Amara and I will be able to properly rest until we see them, though I think maybe not today. Could someone bring them to visit tomorrow? I would love to see them and I know they will be nice, they aren't that unruly...most of the time." I chuckle a bit and Aplha Jake laughs. "I suppose Solana and I can bring them after school tomorrow. They will be very excited to see you. Now just rest and we will see you then. Beta Kyle, Bridgette." Nodding at my parents Alpha Jake walks out the door and I hear him say something to someone in the hall as Nurse Ava amd another nurse come in. "Good news Anise!" Ava says, "The doctor says that you can sit up, just no standing for now and no sitting up without assistance from one of us nurses, ok?" I nod at her and prepare myself to sit up. My parents move out of the way and Ava and the other nurse each take a side and grab under my arms and around my shoulders. "OK, Anise. We are going to do most of the work and sit you up, if it hurts you just yell out and we will stop, OK?" I nod and grit my teeth. Avan looks at the other nurse and counts to three. There is pain as I am sat upright but I grit my teeth against it and breathe. The nurses adjust the bed so it is sitting up and lay me against the back gently. The other nurse leaves and Ava checks my vitals and starts to draw my blood for hlthe tests. As she gets ready to leave she asks, "Is there anything else you need or that I can help with Anise?" I go to asl for some water and food when my stomach growls loudly. I feel my cheeks turn pink as Ava giggles and says she will bring me some food and something to drink. Later that day: I sit in the hospital bed bored out of my mind. Ava had brought me some word finds and coloring books to help me pass the time but I just wanted to go home. I knew that I most likely wouldn't be going home for a few days but I just want to be able to be in normal clothes and sit on my couch in my room if I wanted to. I wonder when we will be able to get back to training....maybe in a few days. Absolutely not! Amara practically yelled in my mind You will listen to the doctor and follow orders or I will not speak to you ever again! Come on Amara, I am fine! I'm almost healed as it is and I feel fine. I could practically feel her roll her eyes as she said That is because you almost died and were unconscious for almost a week! You still have silver, wolfsbane and deadly nightshade coursing through your system and yet you continue to claim that you're fine. You need to rest and let us both heal. I wasn't able to close the wounds and now I'm not sure that they will ever fully heal! I feel her cringe as soon as the last sentence was spoken. I sit there in silence for a second before asking, Amara, what do you mean they may not heal? I can feel her hesitation before I hear her quiet response, I mean I may not be able to heal them and they will scar...like a human would. I feel the color drain from my face as I sit there in stunned silence. I gingerly touch my face and try to swallow past the lump in my throat. I'm about to lose myself in thought when the door bursts open and the triplets rush in and bounce around my bed all babbling at me at once about their day. "Sorry!" Luna Solana says as she follows her children inside, "They took off running when we told them you were awake and didn't stop until we were here." I give her a sympathetic look and turn my attention back to the children, pushing what Amara told me to the back of my mind.
