John Boulder had decided Paul was safest if he remained on the Reservation. Since no one else knew where he was, Paul agreed. He had no idea of where else he might go, anyway. So, after a sorely needed breakfast, Boulder gave Paul a tour of the Reservation. After driving for nearly an hour, Boulder pulled over to the side of the road in front of a yellow sign advertising a deer bounding across the street, which promptly reminded Paul of the warning given by the now deceased trapper named Norm Dillman, and the near miss on Ely’s main street only a few hours later. Boulder pointed to a path to the right of the sign. Paul followed him into the woods. Paul’s knee was still swollen from the night before, but the pain had eased enough to where he barely noticed.
