Chapter Eight: She's Coming

886 Words
Victor Kaine prided himself on one thing above all else control. Control of the market. Control of the board. Control of every rumor, every whisper, every secret buried deep in the city’s veins. But tonight, as he watched Ava Sinclair no, “Ms. Phoenix” stride away after outbidding him without breaking a sweat, he felt something he had not felt in years: A warning. A cold, unmistakable threat. The chandelier above the auction hall flickered as if reacting to the sudden shift in atmosphere. Victor set down his champagne glass, jaw tight. Whoever she was, she hadn’t come to this auction to buy art. She’d come for him. A Puzzle With Too Many Missing Pieces Victor slipped away from the crowd and entered a quieter hallway, pulling out his phone. “Find everything you can about the Phoenix Heiress,” he snapped to his assistant. “Background, history, investments I want it on my desk tonight.” A pause. “Sir,” the assistant replied, voice uneasy, “we’ve tried before. There is no history before three years ago.” “I don’t care,” Victor hissed. “Everyone has a past. Dig deeper.” “She may not have one,” the assistant whispered. “Not one that exists on record.” Victor ended the call. The silence in the hall pressed on him. Something wasn’t right. He had seen that look in a person’s eyes only once years ago when Ava Sinclair stood in her father’s office begging for time, for mercy, for a chance to save the company he was helping destroy. He shook the memory off. Ava Sinclair was dead. But the way Ms. Phoenix lifted her chin… The calm fire in her gaze… The exact shade of defiance she carried… It was hauntingly familiar. “Impossible,” Victor muttered. But doubt, sharp and persistent, curled around his mind like smoke. Ethan’s Interference He turned to head back to the main hall—only to find Ethan Blake blocking the hallway, hands in his pockets, eyes colder than usual. “Running away already?” Ethan asked. Victor stiffened. “You looked like you needed space from your… guest.” Ethan’s stare sharpened. “Stay away from her.” Victor scoffed. “Since when do you protect investors you barely know?” “Since she started looking at you like she knew exactly who you are.” A dangerous silence stretched between them. Ethan was right. Ava no, Ms. Phoenix hadn’t shown fear or awe or interest. She had shown recognition. That was the most dangerous thing imaginable. Victor forced a smile. “Relax, Ethan. She’s just another new face trying to climb the social ladder.” “No,” Ethan said quietly. “She’s something else entirely.” Victor watched Ethan walk away, a knot tightening in his stomach. Ethan Blake rarely misread people. And if the woman unsettled him too… Who exactly was she? The Warning Later that night, as the auction continued, a waiter approached Victor discreetly. “A message for Mr. Kaine,” he said, offering a sealed envelope. Victor frowned. He never received messages at public events. Not unless something was wrong. He tore the envelope open. Inside was a single black card with elegant silver handwriting: You destroyed a family once. This time, the fire comes for you.'' A'' Victor felt the blood drain from his face. He looked up sharply, eyes scanning the room for her. There she was. Ava stood by the balcony, the phoenix pendant glowing like molten flame against her skin. She raised her glass slightly, meeting his stare from across the hall. Not a smile. Not a threat. Just… acknowledgment. Recognition. A silent promise. Victor’s throat tightened. His fingers trembled around the card. It couldn’t be Ava Sinclair. He had seen the reports. He had heard the rumors. But the fire in her eyes… He swallowed hard. “What have I done?” he whispered to himself A Memory He Wanted Buried As the night went on, the past clawed its way back. He remembered the night Ava’s father died how the Sinclair empire collapsed under the weight of debts, forged contracts, and shareholder votes Victor himself helped orchestrate. He remembered Ava’s face the last time he saw her. Tear streaked. Desperate. Begging for mercy he never gave. He ran a hand through his hair, suddenly unable to breathe in the crowded hall. If she was alive… If she remembered… If she had come for him… Victor Kaine was no longer the hunter. He was prey. The Realization When he finally stepped outside for air, the cool night breeze hit his face like a slap. He clutched the black card tightly. He turned it over and froze. On the back, written in the same elegant script, were the words: Do you remember the wedding? I do. Victor staggered backward. The wedding. The one that ended the Sinclair legacy. The one Ethan Blake orchestrated. The one where Ava disappeared forever. A cold horror seeped into him. If Ava Sinclair was alive… If she had risen from the ashes… Then her vendetta wasn’t just against Ethan. It was against everyone who had helped destroy her family. Including him. Victor Kaine finally understood. Ava wasn’t coming for revenge. She was coming to ruin them.
