Chapter Ten Laura had scrubbed the same spot on the kitchen island five times. Jeremy was positive she was now stripping off whatever veneer covered the granite top, and she’d said not one word to him since he’d walked into the house with his dad to find that the sheriff had Alex parked in a chair, the very same chair he was sitting in now that Alex, Wayne, and the sheriff had left. His dad was leaning against the counter, saying something to his mom. It wasn’t so much the fact that she’d said nothing to Jeremy that worried him. It was how quiet she’d become. She wasn’t angry, because that would’ve been something he could handle. He’d never seen his mom this upset before. She was so quiet, as if her anger had an edge of hurt to it, and he didn’t really understand why she would feel that
