What had he been thinking? Or not thinking, considering he seemed to be digging himself into one hole after another with Tiffy. Instead of taking her for dinner, he’d ordered takeout at the Burger Bar and driven them out to the lake, the same spot where all of this had started: a high school party, a bonfire, some beer, and two stupid teens getting their kicks by the water. Now, three years later, sitting on the tailgate of his pickup about two hundred yards from the said secluded spot, he couldn’t take his eyes from Tiffy, who took careful bite after bite of the house burger and had yet to utter one word.
