Chapter 4 The Truth He Was Afraid To Tell

1418 Words
Lily Hart had spent five years imagining what it would feel like to see Ethan Cole again. In some versions, she slapped him. In others, she walked away without looking back. Sometimes, she imagined him begging for forgiveness while she stood there completely unaffected. She had always pictured herself as strong. She had never imagined that one look at him would make her feel seventeen again. Angry. Confused. Hurt. And worse of all— Loved. She hated that last part. "Lily." Emma's voice pulled her back. They were sitting inside the little café near the town square. The same café where Lily and Ethan used to spend hours after school. Lily stared at the untouched coffee in front of her. Emma pushed the cup closer. "Drink." "I'm not thirsty." "You've been staring at that coffee for twenty minutes." Lily sighed. "I saw him." "I know." "I mean... really saw him." Emma leaned forward. "And?" Lily looked out the window. "He looked different." "Different how?" "Older." Emma smiled. "Well, five years will do that." Lily ignored her. "He looked like someone I don't know." "But?" Lily said nothing. Emma's smile disappeared. "But he still looked like Ethan." Lily finally looked at her. "Don't." "I'm not saying anything." "You are." Emma leaned back. "Fine." For a few seconds, neither spoke. Then Emma asked softly, "Did you still love him?" Lily's chest tightened. "No." The answer came too quickly. Emma didn't challenge her. She simply nodded. "Okay." Lily hated that gentle response. It made lying feel worse. She picked up her coffee. It was cold. Just like the coffee she had carried to the oak tree five years ago. She put it down. "I'm here for work." "I know." "That's all." Emma nodded. "Then let's hope you can convince your heart." Lily looked away. She wasn't sure her heart had received the message. Ethan sat alone in his office. A project report had been open on his desk for almost an hour. He hadn't read a single word. He kept seeing Lily's face. The coldness in her eyes. The way she called him Mr. Cole. The way she told him she had waited. He deserved her anger. But knowing that didn't make it easier. A knock sounded. "Come in." Daniel entered with a folder. "The revised schedule." Ethan took it. "Thanks." Daniel didn't leave. Ethan looked up. "What?" "You saw her." Ethan sighed. "Everyone seems to know." "You're not exactly hiding it." Ethan looked down. "I thought I was ready." "Were you?" "No." Daniel pulled out a chair. "You need to tell her." "I can't." "You've been saying that for five years." Ethan's expression hardened. "You don't understand." "I understand enough." Daniel leaned forward. "She thinks you abandoned her." "I know." "She thinks you stopped loving her." Ethan looked away. "That's better than knowing the truth." Daniel stared at him. "Is it?" Ethan didn't answer. His phone suddenly vibrated. He looked at the screen. Unknown number. His entire body went still. Daniel noticed. "Is that them?" Ethan stood. "Leave." Daniel hesitated. "Ethan—" "Now." Daniel walked out. Ethan answered the call. "What do you want?" A man's voice came through. "You've seen her." Ethan's jaw tightened. "Stay away from her." "You should be the one staying away." "You threatened her once." "And you ignored the warning." Ethan's grip tightened around the phone. "She has nothing to do with this." "She became involved the moment you returned." Ethan's heart sank. "What do you want?" A quiet laugh. "Leave Willow Creek." "No." "Then she gets hurt." Ethan closed his eyes. "You won't touch her." "You can't protect her forever." The call ended. Ethan stood there, breathing heavily. He had spent five years believing the danger was gone. He had been wrong. And now Lily was standing directly in the middle of it. The next morning, Lily arrived at the estate early. She wanted to work alone. It was easier that way. She walked through the old west wing, studying the damaged walls. The estate was beautiful beneath all the dust. She took measurements and made notes. Then she heard footsteps. She turned. Ethan. "You're early." "So are you." "I couldn't sleep." Lily looked back at her drawings. "Not my problem." He winced. "Right." They worked in silence. After a few minutes, Ethan noticed Lily rubbing her wrist. "Your scar." She immediately covered it. "What about it?" "You still have it." She looked at him. "Some things don't disappear." He knew she wasn't talking about the scar. "Lily..." "Don't." "I want to explain." "You've said that." "I mean it." "Then explain." Ethan went quiet. She stared at him. "That's what I thought." She gathered her papers. "Lily, wait." She stopped. He took a breath. "I didn't leave because I stopped loving you." She slowly turned. "Then why?" He struggled to speak. "There was a threat." Her expression changed. "What kind of threat?" "Against you." Lily stared at him. "You expect me to believe that?" "It's the truth." "Then why didn't you tell me?" "Because I thought you would be safer if you hated me." She laughed bitterly. "You made me hate myself instead." Ethan's face fell. "What?" "I spent years wondering what I did wrong." "You did nothing." "Then why did you make me feel like I wasn't worth staying for?" He had no answer. Lily wiped her eyes. "You should have trusted me." "I was trying to protect you." "You made the decision for me." She walked toward the door. Ethan caught himself before reaching for her. "Lily." She stopped. His voice was barely a whisper. "I never stopped loving you." She closed her eyes. Those words were the ones she had dreamed of hearing for five years. Now they hurt. "Don't say that." "Why?" "Because I still want to believe you." She walked away. That evening, Lily went to the oak tree. She needed air. She needed somewhere that didn't feel like the estate. Instead, the memories followed her. She touched the old carving. Ethan + Lily. "You really ruined everything." A voice came from behind her. "I know." She turned. Ethan stood there. She wiped her cheek quickly. "You shouldn't be here." "I know." "Then why did you come?" "Because I need to tell you something." Lily crossed her arms. "Go ahead." Ethan stepped closer. "The night I disappeared, my father received a threat." Lily's expression changed. "What threat?" "They knew about you." "Who?" "I don't know." "You're lying." "I'm not." "Then tell me everything." Ethan looked away. "I can't." Lily laughed. "Of course." "I need to keep you safe." "I don't need you to protect me." "I know." "Then stop deciding what I can handle." Ethan looked at her. For a moment, neither spoke. Then he said, "My father didn't leave Willow Creek voluntarily." Lily's eyes widened. "What happened to him?" Before Ethan could answer, his phone rang. He looked at the screen. His face went pale. Lily stepped closer. "Who is it?" Ethan didn't answer. The phone kept ringing. Finally, he answered. "Hello?" Silence. Then a distorted voice spoke. "You have five minutes." Ethan's face hardened. "Five minutes for what?" "To decide whether Lily lives peacefully or becomes part of your family's unfinished business." The call ended. Lily stared at him. "What did they say?" Ethan looked at her. For the first time, she saw something she had never seen in his eyes before. Fear. Not for himself. For her. "Go home," he said. "No." "Lily." "I'm not leaving until you tell me the truth." "You don't understand." "Then make me understand." He looked toward the road. A black car was parked in the distance. Its lights were off. Ethan's voice dropped. "They found us." Lily's heart began pounding. "Who?" Ethan took her hand. This time, she didn't pull away. "The same people who made me leave you five years ago." A car door opened in the darkness. Ethan immediately pulled Lily behind him. Someone stepped onto the road. Then another person appeared. Lily held her breath. She couldn't see their faces. But Ethan could. His expression changed instantly. "No..." Lily looked at him. "Who is that?" Ethan stared at the approaching figure. His voice broke. "My father." Lily's eyes widened. "But you said—" "I know what I said." The figure stopped beneath the streetlight. And for the first time in five years, Ethan's father looked directly at his son. Then he said four words that made Ethan's blood run cold. "You should never have returned."
