Chapter 2 The Goodbye I Never Heard

1407 Words
Lily Hart hated silence. She never knew silence could hurt until Ethan Cole disappeared. Before him, her life had always been noisy. His laughter. His stupid jokes. His habit of stealing food from her lunch box and denying it with a straight face. The arguments that lasted five minutes before one of them started laughing. Now there was nothing. No message. No call. No Ethan waiting outside her gate. Just silence. And questions. So many questions. Lily sat beneath the old oak tree, staring at the road. She had been there for almost two hours. "He said he'd come back." Her voice sounded strange in the empty place. She touched the words carved into the tree. Ethan + Lily. The letters were fading. Just like everything else. Three weeks. That was how long Ethan had been gone. For the first few days, Lily refused to believe anything was wrong. She made excuses for him. Maybe his phone was broken. Maybe his father had sent him somewhere. Maybe he would appear at her door the next morning and laugh at her for worrying. But every morning came without him. And every night ended with the same unanswered question. Where is Ethan? She had called his number until she memorized the message that came after every attempt. The number was unavailable. She had gone to his house. The gate was locked. The curtains were drawn. Nobody answered. Then, one afternoon, she saw Mrs. Cole at the grocery store. Lily almost ran toward her. "Mrs. Cole!" The older woman stopped. For one second, something like fear crossed her face. Then she forced a smile. "Lily." "Where is Ethan?" The smile disappeared. Lily's stomach tightened. "You know where he is." Mrs. Cole looked around before lowering her voice. "Ethan had to leave." "Leave?" "Yes." "Where?" "I don't know." Lily stared at her. "You don't know?" Mrs. Cole looked down. "I am sorry." Lily's eyes filled with tears. "Why does everyone keep saying that?" Mrs. Cole didn't answer. "What happened to him?" "I can't tell you." "Why?" "Because I promised him." Lily froze. "A promise?" Mrs. Cole nodded. "What did he make you promise?" The woman looked directly into Lily's eyes. "That I would never tell you where he went." The words broke something inside Lily. She stepped backward. "He asked you to lie to me?" "He wanted to protect you." "Protect me from what?" Mrs. Cole's face went pale. For a moment, Lily thought she would finally tell her. Instead, she whispered, "Forget him, Lily." Then she walked away. Lily stood in the middle of the store, unable to move. Forget him? How could she forget the person who had been part of almost every important memory of her life? And why did everyone sound afraid? That night, Lily went back to the oak tree. Rain had started falling. She didn't care. She sat beneath the branches, hugging her knees. "Ethan, what did you do?" No answer. She laughed bitterly. "Did you really leave me?" Her voice broke. "You could have told me." She wiped her face. "You promised." For the first time, Lily wondered if she had been foolish. Maybe Ethan had never loved her the way she loved him. Maybe the promise beneath the tree had only meant something to her. She stood up. "If you wanted to leave, you should have said goodbye." Her voice shook. "I would have hated you." She swallowed. "But at least I would have known the truth." She turned to leave. Then she heard something. A branch snapped behind her. Lily stopped. Her heart began pounding. She slowly turned. Nobody. Only darkness and rain. "Ethan?" Silence. She took a step forward. Another branch cracked. This time, she ran. She didn't stop until she reached home. She locked the door behind her and leaned against it, breathing hard. Then she noticed something. A small envelope had been pushed underneath the door. Her name was written on it. Lily. Her hands trembled. She opened it. Inside was a single piece of paper. Stop asking questions. Nothing else. Lily stared at the words. Then another piece of paper slipped out. There was only one sentence. The next person who gets hurt will be someone you love. Her blood ran cold. This wasn't Ethan. This was a warning. Someone knew she was looking for him. And someone was watching. Five years later. Willow Creek had changed. So had Lily. She was twenty-two now. She had left the town after graduation and moved to the city to study architecture. She worked hard. Built a career. Made friends. Created a life that belonged entirely to her. Everyone who knew her believed she had moved on. Maybe she had. At least, that was what she told herself. But every few months, she found herself returning to the old oak tree. Like today. She stood beneath it, staring at the faded carving. Ethan + Lily. "Still here?" Lily turned. Emma stood behind her with two cups of coffee. Lily smiled. "You scared me." "I called your phone three times." "I didn't hear it." Emma handed her a cup. "You always disappear when you come here." Lily looked at the tree. "I just like the place." Emma gave her a knowing look. "You mean you like remembering him." Lily's expression hardened. "I don't remember him." "Right." "I don't." "Then why did you stare at his name for five minutes?" Lily said nothing. Emma sighed. "You never got your goodbye." Lily looked away. "I got one." "A note saying he had to leave isn't a goodbye." Lily's fingers tightened around the cup. "People leave, Emma." "Not everyone leaves without explaining." Lily swallowed. "Maybe he had his reasons." "Do you still love him?" Lily immediately shook her head. "No." The answer came too quickly. Emma noticed. But she didn't push. Instead, she asked quietly, "Then why are you still angry?" Lily looked at the tree. She didn't know. Maybe because anger was easier than admitting she still cared. Across the city, Ethan Cole stood before a wall of windows. The man in the reflection barely looked like the boy Lily remembered. He wore an expensive suit. His hair was neatly styled. His face was harder. Five years had changed him. But one thing had remained untouched. The old photograph on his desk. Ethan picked it up. It showed two teenagers beneath an oak tree. Lily was laughing. He was looking at her instead of the camera. He smiled faintly. "I hope you're happy." His phone rang. He answered. "Ethan, we have a problem." His expression changed. "What happened?" "The Willow Creek project." Ethan frowned. "What about it?" "The board approved your return." He went silent. "Return?" "You're expected there next week." Ethan looked at the photograph again. After five years of avoiding Willow Creek, he was being sent straight back. "Cancel it." "I tried." "And?" "They refused." Ethan closed his eyes. "Who is leading the local side?" There was a pause. Then his assistant answered. "Lily Hart." Ethan's eyes opened. For several seconds, he couldn't speak. "Lily?" "Yes." His hand tightened around the photograph. "Are you sure?" "Completely." Ethan slowly sat down. Five years. Five years of telling himself he had done the right thing. Five years of forcing himself not to call her. Five years of wondering whether she hated him. And now he was going back. But there was something his assistant didn't know. Ethan hadn't left Lily because he stopped loving her. He had left because someone had threatened her life. And the person who made that threat had never been caught. His phone rang again. An unknown number. Ethan stared at the screen. Then answered. "Hello?" A man's voice came through. "You should not go back to Willow Creek." Ethan's face became cold. "Who is this?" "You know exactly who I am." The call ended. Ethan immediately stood. His eyes went to the old photograph. Then to the window. Someone had just reminded him of the past. And suddenly, returning to Willow Creek wasn't just about seeing Lily again. It meant reopening a war he thought had ended five years ago. A war that could put Lily in danger all over again. Ethan picked up his coat. This time, he wasn't running away. He was going back. And if the person behind everything was still watching... They were about to learn one thing. Ethan Cole would not lose Lily twice.
