The city breathed below them, unaware of the storm slowly gathering on that forgotten rooftop. Elara hadn’t said a word since Kairo’s question. Not because she didn’t want to—because if she did, everything might collapse. He had looked at her like he meant it. Like she wasn’t just a title, a last name, or a role to perform. She was a person. A girl. Someone worth asking What do you want, Elara? But in her world, wants were dangerous. They came with headlines, bodyguards, consequences. Kairo finally broke the quiet. “You don’t have to tell me.” “I want to,” she whispered, surprising them both. “But I don’t know how.” A breeze swept her hair over her face, and he reached out to gently move it aside. His touch was warm—anchoring. “I’ve been invisible in my own life,” she said slowly, her voice cracking. “Smiling when I’m told. Standing where they place me. I don’t even know what I want... I just know this—” she gestured around the rooftop, “feels more real than anything else.” Kairo didn’t respond with words. He simply sat beside her, letting the silence stretch like a comforter, not a cage. But that moment was shattered by a loud buzz from Elara’s pocket—her father’s private number. She stared at it like it burned her. “You should answer it,” Kairo said, his voice tight. “I don’t want to.” “You might not get another chance like this.” She looked at him. “What if I don’t want another chance like this? What if I just want this moment to last?” His eyes searched hers. “Then stay.” But the phone kept buzzing. Elara stood, conflicted, heart racing. “If I go now... it’s over, isn’t it?” He didn’t answer. But his eyes said everything. She pressed Decline.
