The post I'd just liked vanished seconds later.
A message from Gavin appeared almost immediately.
Gavin: Where are you? When will you be home?
He clearly wasn't sure whether I'd seen the post.
The message was nothing more than an attempt to test the waters.
I let out a bitter laugh and typed back.
Madeline: On my way.
After a brief pause, another message appeared.
Gavin: You got off work early today? I thought you had a reception tonight. Did you go home early to get ready?
I didn't reply.
Another message followed.
Gavin: I've been thinking about meeting your parents. Let's postpone it. You're too important to the company right now, and going public could hurt your career. I can't be that selfish. You understand, don't you?
I had long since stopped expecting anything from him. I typed back calmly.
Madeline: Don't bother. We're done.
He had said things like that before, and I used to believe he genuinely had my best interests at heart.
Now I knew they had all been excuses.
The truth was that another woman mattered more to him, so he'd never given me a real place in his life.
I hung up and switched my phone to airplane mode.
From then on, nothing Gavin did had anything to do with me.
