My flight had a long layover in Bellmere.
Bellmere was a popular tourist city known for its nightlife.
With more than 10 hours before my connecting flight, I decided to hit a bar.
Once inside, I found a seat in a quiet corner and turned on my phone.
The screen was filled with missed calls and unread messages.
I ignored Gavin's calls, blocked his number, and called back a coworker I was close to.
"What happened, Madeline? Did you quit because of the bonus? People are saying you left because of Mr. Carter and Abigail. Is that true? Money can be earned again, and there are plenty of other men out there. How could you just leave without saying anything? I'm worried about you."
I didn't know how to respond, so I gave a few vague answers and ended the call.
Then my landlord called.
"Ms. Ross, Mr. Carter came by today and paid your rent for the next 10 years. He told us to keep the apartment ready because he didn't know when you would be back, and he arranged for cleaners to come by regularly. Did you two have a fight? He looked terrible."
'How can we be fighting when there is nothing left between us?'
The thought almost made me laugh, but I couldn't.
I was about to ask someone to join me for a drink and let loose for once.
Then I looked up and found Gavin standing at the entrance to my booth, glaring at me.
