I was born in a small, remote town in the south. With so few flights, getting home was always an ordeal. Whenever I asked Gavin to visit my family with me, he became evasive and changed the subject. This time, however, he followed me all the way to the airport. Somehow, he even had a ticket for the same flight. "Your stomach was hurting a lot recently. Has it been any better these past few days?" He pulled out a box of antacids. "Keep these in your purse. Take one if your stomach starts hurting. You can't keep gritting your teeth and waiting for the pain to pass." I turned away and refused to acknowledge him. His concern had come too late to mean anything.
