CHAPTER 4

The soft moonlight filtered through the sheer curtains, casting its rays across the bedroom with Emily lying motionless on the bed. She focused her gaze on the ceiling blankly, oblivious of her environment, buried in the thoughts that swirled through her mind like a wild wind. The delicate red, transparent nightdress she wore captured her slender frame in a way that accentuated her boobs with her n*****s pointing outward. The captivating shape of her hips was noticeable and no man could resist its appearance. No matter how she tried to believe that things had worked still turned out well between her and Carter; that he would change his mind about the divorce issue and come to love her, at least a bit, the worries and fears kept creeping back, taunting her with their relentless presence. All she needed was just to be with Carter even if he couldn’t love her now; she believed with time, things would change for good. Was that too much to ask? Her mind traveled back to the moment her parents broke the news of her pregnancy to her. Her gaze was still on the ceiling, she cupped her belly with her both arms, caressing it softly. “It is all gonna be alright, baby,” she muttered. Emily was jacked back to life by the penetrating sound of her husband’s horn as he zoomed into the compound, packing slowly at the packing slot. She moved her gaze to the wall clock. It was some minutes past 11 pm. She shook her head and sighed. “Well, thank God he’s back now. That’s all that mattered to me. I just want to see and to know that he’s okay.” She muttered to herself. Carter entered the house through the seating room, no one to welcome him as before. Usually, Emily had to sit in the sitting room waiting to welcome him home no matter how late, though they fought sometimes because of his late arrival, but Emily still loved him. He staggered upstairs to the bedroom, his footsteps uneven and his gait unsteady. Each breath he gave out left an unmistakable stench of alcohol oozing from his lips. His gaze was stilled on Emily as he staggered in, pulling off his coat, refusing to blink as though if it did, she was going to disappear. Funny huh? For a while, Emily caught shivering inside her, wondering what she had done wrong this time around. Immediately Carter pulled off his trousers left with boxers and started approaching her, it dawned on her that he must’ve been caught by her seductive appearance. Subtle lines drew across her cheeks as she gave out a subtle smile. Emily thought of resisting him, but then she changed her mind. Couldn’t it be that she’s now been attracted to Carter? Could it be that her wish to live happily with him had now been met? She shrugged and hid her emotion. She didn’t want to appear weak to the man who had found pleasure in hurting her feelings. The more Carter stared at his wife, the more the thoughts of Anthony’s words pierced through his heart. He was after all correct. His wife truly is sexy, and right now, he couldn’t resist her appearance, just as Tony described. “You’re beautiful,” he whispered into her ears. The sound of that word made her giggle, resisting the smile that was about to blow off her face. Did he mean what he just said? It had been ages since he looked at her and said that word. Or could it be just a skim to lure me into having s*x with him? Questions besieged her mind as her devourer kept advancing. He placed his two arms on her cheek and cupped a kiss on her forehead, then moved to cup her lips; the pungent smell of alcohol oozing out of his mouth attacked her breath, making her jack back to the pillow behind her. “What’s that stench smell?” she asked. “Don’t worry about that,” he replied, not minding the effect. “Let’s just enjoy this moment, alright?” She hesitantly surrendered. Carter moved his hand from caressing her breasts to fingering her while the other hand held her cheek and his lips inside hers, dominating her mouth in a deep kiss. Emily held her breath, trying not to moan. Carter could feel his rod piercing out of his boxers, long, stiff. He quickly pulled off the boxers, lifted her gown, and pulled it off her. She didn’t wear panties, and that made the blissful journey smoother. She tried to tell him something, but Carter shoved it off. He spread her legs and gently pulled into her, thrusting in and out of her with his weight supported by his both elbows on the bed. Emily finally gave out the moan, her mouth wide open, brows furrowed. She could feel him inside her and didn’t want him to stop. They continued till both were satisfied. It was a beautiful morning, the rays from the morning sun pierced through the curtains; penetrating Emily’s closed eyes as she turned away from the shade. She opened her eyes and yearned, glancing left and right only to find herself alone in the bedroom. “Where is my husband?” she muttered wearily. She pulled away the blanket, took a black gown from her wardrobe, and put it on before leaving for the kitchen. Carter didn’t leave any note. He left very early in the morning. She made a coffee for herself as the housemaid came in and greeted her. She was in the seating room still thinking about last night, beaming and fantasizing about the future of her, her kid, and Carter together when a probing knock at the door sent her back to the present. She went for the door and opened it to behold the presence of Carter’s lawyer. “What’s a lawyer doing in my house by this time of the morning?” she muttered, her brows narrowed and fixed on the gentleman. He was in a tailored suit that raised his shutters in a manner that depicted authority, and his hair was well-dressed. “Good morning, Mrs. Anderson,” the lawyer greeted, giving a beam, a brown envelope held down in his hand. “Good morning, Mr. Bennett,” Emily returned the greeting, giving a fake smile. “What pleasure do I owe this unexpected visit?” The lawyer bit his lips, maintaining his composure. “Your husband said I should deliver this to you.” He handed the brown envelope to her. “Your signature is needed,” he added, waving a hand as he turned and left. With the door closed, she dipped her hand inside the envelope and brought out the papers. Lo and behold, it was a divorce paper, requesting her signature. Deep lines immediately swept across her brow as she frowned. Her shoulders slumped forward, her nostrils flared with anger, and her blood boiled beneath her skin. Doesn’t what we shared last night after our ending fights mean anything to him? Did he take me for w***e to satisfy his s****l urge? This is not right. Something is wrong somewhere. The questions besieged her mind. She moved to drop the envelope on the center table, and there, she saw another shock that that answered her questions with clarity. A piece of white paper held on it by the remote was written on it, “Make sure you take emergency contraceptive pills…” Emily slumped to the floor weightlessly. Her head almost hit the wooden center table. It finally dawned on her that anything connecting her with Carter was over. If he was resolute on not wanting a child with her, then there is no hope or anything left for her to keep staying. Her father was right after all. She deserved better; to be happy. She looked down at her belly, forced out a smile, and then grabbed the papers from the table and penned her signature artfully as she swung into the bedroom. She went for the telephone, raised it to her ear, and dialed some digits. “Mum, I’m coming home.”
