Snap! Caleb lowered down onto the belly of his wolf form. He lifted his snout to scent the evening air.
Prey... his wolf senses told him but the humanity in him knew it was the scent of a human female and something else, something small.
He crept closer, his curiosity perhaps being more that of a cat than a wolf. Soon he could see the woman, she had long dark hair and was trembling as she put a bundle on the forest floor. She looked up and the moon and wailed. It was a long and mournful cry, screaming of heartbreak. She took one last look at the bundle on the floor and pulled out a gun.
Caleb tensed. His hackles raising as the woman pointed it towards the bundle, which by this time, he could see was a baby. Her hands shook as she lifted the gun away from the child.
He knew what she was doing as the barrel of the gun rose higher and kissed her forehead goodnight.
BANG!!!
He didn’t stop her. Why didn’t he stop her? He was frozen on the floor staring at the crimson watering on forest floor. He couldn’t move and it felt like his heart was going to beat put of his chest.
The internal whining of his wolf brought him back to his senses long enough to hear the crying. The baby. The baby was still alive. He could still save the child.
He summoned his change and lifted the bundle. He would be there for it. The child would not perish.
