Chapter 2: The Forbidden Border

1216 Words
The midnight air was sharp as glass, cutting through the thin silk of my dress, but the burning in my left wrist kept the cold at bay. I didn't take a horse. I didn't take a pack vehicle. If I did, Julian’s border guards would flag my departure before I even reached the outer treeline. Instead, I walked on foot through the thick brambles of the shadow forest, following the ancient game trails I had memorized while organizing the pack’s harvest routes three autumns ago. Behind me, the lights of the Crescent Moon main hall flickered like dying embers. By now, the feast would be in full swing. Julian would be raising a glass of expensive wine with Lady Vance, boasting about the strategic wealth of the Bloodfang alliance. They wouldn't notice I was gone until morning. Not until Julian called for the morning supply requisitions and found an empty desk. Not until the northern patrol commanders realized the treaty renewals hadn't been signed. Let them feast tonight. Tomorrow, the machine I built for six years would start to rust. A low, guttural howl echoed through the trees to my right. I froze, stepping behind the wide trunk of an ancient oak. I pressed my back against the rough bark, breathing quietly through my nose. Through the moonlight, two silver wolves bounded through the underbrush—Julian’s outer perimeter scouts. They weren't looking for a runaway; they were just running their routine midnight sweep. "Did you hear?" one of the guards linked telepathically, his voice leaking through the thin veil of the woods. "The Alpha rejected Nora tonight. Taking the Bloodfang girl instead." "About time," the other scout snorted. "Nora was always too quiet. Never acted like real Luna material. Just spent all her time tucked away in the back rooms with ledgers and maps." "Yeah. Bloodfang brings three gold mines to the territory. What did Nora bring?" "Nothing," the second wolf laughed, kicking up dirt as they trotted north. "Just extra weight." I stood in the shadows until the sound of their paws faded into the distance. My face remained calm, but inside, a dark, icy resolve settled deep into my bones. Extra weight. I had saved their families from starvation during the harsh winter two years ago while they sat in warm barracks, and they didn't even know my name was on the ledger that bought the grain. I pulled my sleeve further down over my left wrist. The golden moon mark beneath my skin was pulsing faster now, reacting to something ahead. Ten minutes later, the lush green pines of Crescent Moon abruptly gave way to a stark, terrifying expanse. The Trees of Ash. This was the border of the Lycan Sovereignty—a vast, brutal territory ruled by the Royal Bloodline. Where pack territory ended, the Blackwood Realm began. No wolf crossed this line without an express invitation from the Royal Court. Those who did were executed on sight. In the center of the clearing stood a massive obsidian stone, carved with ancient runes that hummed with a violent, dark aura. I stopped at the edge of the stone boundary. Across the border lay the pitch-black canopy of the Blackwood Forest. Legend said Alpha King Cassian Blackwood had butchered three rogue packs single-handedly when they attempted to breach his southern borders five years ago. They called him the Sovereign of Blood. He had no queen, allowed no weakness, and felt no mercy. I looked back one last time toward Crescent Moon. There was nothing left for me there. I took a deep breath, lifted my head, and stepped directly across the obsidian line into the Lycan King’s domain. The moment my foot hit the dark soil, a sharp, deafening c***k echoed through the forest. The air around me instantly turned to ice. The wind died completely. The silence was absolute, heavy, and suffocating, compressed by an oppressive authority so immense it felt like gravity had doubled. A Royal Alpha aura. Before I could take a second step, three shadows dropped from the high branches above. They weren't ordinary wolves. They were Lycan enforcement guards—massive, towering men clad in obsidian battle armor, their eyes glowing with lethal gold light. Their swords were unsheathed before they even hit the ground, the steel gleaming under the moonlight. "Insolent trespasser," the lead Lycan growled, his voice a deep, vibrating rumble that made the ground beneath my boots tremble. "You step into the King's woods wearing Crescent Moon colors?" The guard to his left raised a heavy silver blade, pointing the tip directly at my throat. "Speak your business before we hang your head from the border stones." I didn't flinch. I didn't reach for a weapon I didn't have. I stood my ground, staring straight into the lead guard's golden eyes. "My name is Nora Vance," I said, my voice steady and cold in the silent forest. "I have no pack, no Alpha, and no intent of retreat. Take me to King Cassian." The lead guard let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "The King doesn't speak to stray she-wolves. He executes them." He stepped forward, reaching out a heavy, armored hand to seize my shoulder. The moment his fingers touched the fabric of my dress, my left wrist flared with blinding, scalding heat. A wave of raw, ancient power erupted from the hidden mark on my skin, blasting outward in a brilliant ring of golden light. The force hit the three Lycan guards like a physical wall, sending the lead guard staggering back three steps as his eyes widened in absolute shock. The golden light illuminated the entire clearing, casting long shadows against the black trees. From deep within the dark forest, a terrifying, low growl reverberated through the earth—a sound so powerful, so ancient, that even the Lycan guards instantly dropped to one knee, lowering their heads in reverence. The trees parted. Stepping slowly out of the darkness was a man whose presence commanded the very air in the forest. Broad-shouldered, towering, and imposing, he wore a dark velvet coat over silver-threaded armor. His dark hair was brushed back, framing a face cut from granite—chiseled jaw, high cheekbones, and eyes of molten silver that burned through the night. Alpha King Cassian Blackwood. His silver eyes swept over the kneeling guards, then locked onto me. For a fraction of a second, his lethal, impassive expression faltered. His chest heaved as he took a sharp, sudden breath. Deep within his chest, a low, dormant roar rumbled to life—a sound that hadn't echoed in the Royal Court for a century. His Lycan had just awakened. Cassian stepped closer, his heavy leather boots crushing the frost beneath his feet, stopping mere inches from me. The sheer pressure of his power was overwhelming, yet as he looked down into my eyes, my wrist throbbed with a warm, comforting heat. His silver eyes dropped to my left arm, then rose back to meet my gaze. His jaw tightened, a battle raging behind his cold features as he fought against an instinct he had denied his entire life. "Who are you?" Cassian demanded, his deep voice carrying a command that could bring armies to their knees. "And why is my beast calling you mate?"
