Chapter 6: The Face-Off at the Gate

1013 Words
The iron portcullis of the southern gate rose with a heavy, grinding crunch of chain and stone. Beyond the threshold lay the neutral border expanse, where fifty heavily armed warriors of the Crescent Moon Pack stood in tight formation. At their head mounted on a black warhorse was Alpha Julian Ashbourne. He wore his ceremonial silver armor, his dark cape fluttering in the freezing mountain draft. Beside him rode three guards bearing the banner of Bloodfang—a show of force meant to intimidate. Then, the iron doors fully opened. Julian’s horse stirred nervously, snorting frost into the air as Alpha King Cassian Blackwood stepped out into the light. Cassian wore no heavy battle armor, only his dark coat and the royal crest across his chest. He carried no drawn blade. He didn't need one. His sheer, suffocating Alpha aura rolled across the snowy clearing like a tidal wave, causing several of Julian’s front-line guards to instantly bow their heads, their horses champing at their bits in fear. I walked half a pace behind Cassian, clad in a sleek obsidian dress given to me by the court tailors, my arms folded loosely over my chest. High Commander Vance and twenty Lycan executioners stood behind us, silent as shadows. When Julian’s eyes landed on me, a mixture of shock, fury, and possessiveness flashed across his handsome face. "Nora!" Julian called out, reining his horse forward three paces before Cassian’s aura forced the beast to a hard stop. Julian looked at Cassian, tightening his grip on the reins. "Your Majesty. I have come to resolve an internal pack matter. That female is Nora Vance, a rogue who fled my territory after stealing classified trade records." Cassian didn't break his posture. He stood tall, his silver eyes fixed on Julian as if studying a bug on a windshield. "You speak in my realm, Alpha Ashbourne," Cassian said, his deep voice carrying effortless, vibrating power. "Choose your next words with extreme care." Julian swallowed hard, the muscles in his jaw twitching as he felt the crushing weight of the Lycan King's presence. He tried to project Alpha authority, but compared to Cassian, he looked like a child playing dress-up in his father's armor. Julian shifted his gaze back to me, his tone dropping into the familiar, patronizing register he had used on me for six years. "Nora, stop this ridiculous charade," Julian said, offering a tight, forced smile. "I know you're hurt about the coronation. I know you walked out to prove a point. But taking refuge with the Lycan King and holding the pack's trade vouchers hostage is crossing the line. Come home. We will settle this in private." I stared at him. I didn't yell. I didn't sneer. My expression remained entirely neutral, my eyes as cool and vast as the frozen mountain lake behind the Citadel. "Which home, Julian?" I asked softly. The simplicity of the question seemed to hit him like a physical blow. Julian blinked, his smile slipping. "What?" "Which home?" I repeated, taking one measured step forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Cassian. "The administrative office where I worked eighteen-hour days so your pack wouldn't starve? Or the clerk's desk you offered me after rejecting me in front of five hundred guests?" Julian’s face flushed red with embarrassment as his own border guards shifted uncomfortably behind him. "Nora, be reasonable!" Julian snapped, his composure cracking. "The pack is in chaos! The eastern merchants are refusing our gold! The northern grain suppliers won't release the harvest shipments without your seal! Do you have any idea what you've done?" "I haven't done anything," I replied smoothly, tilting my head. "I simply allowed you to rule." A low, deep rumble of satisfaction vibrated deep within Cassian’s chest. The Lycan King stepped forward, placing a heavy, protective gloved hand lightly on the small of my back. The heat of his palm burned through the fabric of my dress, sending a clear, dangerous message to every warrior in the clearing. "Julian thought he discarded a burden," Cassian said, his silver eyes locking onto Julian with absolute, lethal dominance. "Instead, he delivered his greatest strategist to his strongest rival." Julian gasped, his eyes darting to Cassian’s hand on my waist, then back to my face. He saw no fear in my eyes. He saw no regret. "She is my betrothed!" Julian yelled, his beast clawing at his throat as desperation took over. "By pack law—" "By pack law, you publicly severed your betrothal at your coronation," I interrupted, my voice razor-sharp and calm. "You chose the Bloodfang gold mines, Julian. Go eat your gold." Julian’s face went pale. He opened his mouth to order his guards forward, but before he could utter a single command, High Commander Vance stepped forward, drawing his massive greatsword and slamming the tip into the icy earth. "Any step across the border line will be treated as an act of war against the Lycan Sovereignty," Vance announced, his voice booming over the clearing. "Return to your pack, Alpha Ashbourne. While you still have one." Julian looked at me one last time—searching for the quiet, compliant girl who used to balance his ledgers without complaint. He found only the High Strategist of the Lycan Court. With a harsh yank of the reins, Julian turned his horse around, shouting a bitter order to his men as they beat a rapid, humiliation-filled retreat back into the shadow forest. As the dust settled in the snow, I turned to look up at Cassian. His silver eyes were burning down at me, filled with an intense, unyielding light that made my pulse jump. "You handled him well," Cassian murmured, his hand lingering on my waist for one second longer than necessary before stepping back. "He made it easy," I replied softly. "He will be back," Cassian warned, turning his gaze toward the dark treeline. "And next time, he won't bring words. He will bring the Bloodfang army." "Let him," I said, a small, confident smile touching my lips. "I've already mapped their march routes."
