The word hung in the freezing night air, heavy and lethal.
Mate.
The three Lycan guards remained on their knees, their heads bowed so low their foreheads nearly touched the frost-covered earth.
None of them dared to move, breathe, or speak. In the century since Cassian Blackwood took the throne, the Sovereign of the Lycan Realm had never claimed a woman, let alone acknowledged a mate bond.
I looked up at him, refusing to lower my head under his crushing aura. Up close, Cassian was intimidating—a man carved from winter and stone. His silver eyes burned with an intense, predatory focus, tracing every detail of my face, my bare collarbone where the silver Luna crest had hung hours ago, and finally resting on my left wrist.
My wrist pulsed again, the hidden golden mark humming in harmony with the sudden, violent heartbeat thundering in his chest.
Cassian took a half-step back, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched along his sharp jawline. The silver in his eyes flashed, wrestling for control against the golden hue of his Lycan beast.
"Get up," Cassian commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.
The three guards scrambled to their feet instantly, their eyes wide with disbelief as they looked between their King and a lone, silk-clad she-wolf from a mid-tier pack.
"Your Majesty," the lead guard stammered, his voice shaking slightly. "She crossed the boundary stone without authorization. The law of the realm demands—"
"I know what the law demands, Commander Vance," Cassian cut him off, his voice flat and dangerous. "I also know when a boundary line has been breached by ancient blood."
He turned his gaze back to me. The warmth that had briefly flickered in his aura was gone, replaced by an impenetrable wall of ice.
"You are Nora Vance," Cassian said, stating it not as a question, but as a fact he had already analyzed. "Former intended Luna of the Crescent Moon Pack. Discarded tonight at Alpha Julian’s coronation."
I didn't express surprise that he already knew. The Lycan King’s intelligence network reached every corner of the northern territories.
"I was not discarded," I replied, my voice calm and even. "I relinquished my position and walked away."
A faint, sharp smirk touched the corner of Cassian’s lips—gone as fast as it appeared. "Semantics. You were rejected by a foolish boy who trades strategy for shiny trinkets. And now you walk into my woods, carrying a light that hasn't been seen in these lands for five hundred years."
He stepped closer, reaching out a leather-gloved hand. With two fingers, he hooked the hem of my left sleeve and pulled it back, exposing my pale wrist.
There, glowing faintly beneath the skin, was a golden crest shaped like a crescent moon wrapped in ancient, woven thorns—the mark of the Moon Queen's royal bloodline.
Commander Vance gasped softly behind us. "The Sovereign Mark..."
"The blood of the original matriarchs," Cassian murmured, his thumb brushing over the warm skin just above the mark. The physical contact sent a jolt of liquid fire straight up my arm, making my breath hitch.
Cassian felt it too. His eyes darkened, his Lycan growling low in his throat, demanding he pull me into his arms and sink his fangs into my shoulder to seal the bond.
Instead, Cassian abruptly let go of my wrist and took two steps back, putting distance between us.
The cold air rushed back in, making the sudden absence of his heat ache.
"I do not believe in fate, Nora Vance," Cassian declared, his voice dropping into a stern, authoritative register. "Fate makes men soft. It gives weak Alphas an excuse to rely on magic rather than strength. My beast may recognize your blood, but I rule this kingdom with my mind, not my instincts."
I adjusted my sleeve, covering the glowing mark once more. "I didn't come here seeking a husband, Your Majesty. I came here looking for a territory that respects power over politics."
Cassian studied me for a long moment. He was looking for fear, desperation, or tears—the usual reactions of a woman whose mate bond had just been shattered, only to be rejected by fate's replacement.
He found none of it in my eyes.
"You have no pack," Cassian noted. "You have no status. If Julian realizes what blood runs in your veins, he will bring his entire army to my border to drag you back."
"Julian doesn't know," I said smoothly. "He spent six years looking at my ledgers and never once looked at me. And if he comes to your border, his pack will collapse before your guards even draw their swords."
Cassian’s silver eyes locked onto mine, a subtle glint of interest replacing the ice. "Why?"
"Because I took the trade routes, the winter supply keys, and the grain contracts with me in my head," I said, offering a small, cold smile. "In three weeks, Crescent Moon will have no grain. In two months, their northern border guards will desert because their pay wasn't authorized. Julian traded a strategist for three empty gold mines that require two years of excavation before they yield a single coin."
Silence fell over the clearing.
Commander Vance and the two guards stared at me as if I were a ghost.
Then, Alpha King Cassian Blackwood did something his guards had likely never seen him do.
He threw his head back and let out a low, deep laugh that resonated through the dark forest.
"Calculated. Cold. Ruthless," Cassian said, stepping toward me once more. He didn't look at me as a mate, nor as a helpless stray. He looked at me as an equal. "You didn't just leave his pack. You executed it."
"I simply allowed him to carry the full weight of his own decision," I replied.
Cassian nodded slowly, his posture shifting into that of a ruler making a business deal.
"Very well, Nora Vance. I will not claim you as my Queen. I will not surrender my realm to a bond dictated by the stars. But I have an empire to run, and my logistics commanders are incompetent."
He extended his gloved hand toward me.
"You want protection from Julian? You earn it. You will serve as the High Strategist of the Lycan Royal Court. You fix my eastern trade routes, and I give you sanctuary, a fortress, and immunity from every Alpha in the continent."
I looked at his outstretched hand, then up into his molten silver eyes. The mate bond between us pulsed softly, a quiet promise of something deeper waiting beneath his cold armor.
I reached out and placed my hand in his.
"Deal, Your Majesty."
