rthur’s P.O.V. (Continued)
I didn’t get the time to think about a way to communicate with her. Colton told me that one of the nurses tending Skye’s wounds could read lips and succeeded in conversing with Skye a few times during the changing of bandages.
But I neither know lip-reading nor do I know sign language.
I looked at the bowl and frowned.
It was just a simple chicken soup. She was recovering from severe injuries, heavy blood loos, a high concentration of wolfsbane in her stream, and that suppressant.
Was it enough to nourish her body and give her extra nourishment?
It seems that my mother was still taking my anger lightly.
“Did you eat anything else?” I asked her, noticing her tightening her grip on the bowl.
She shook her head negatively.
I raised my hand in her direction.
“Give the bowl to me,” I asked her calmly, trying to keep my voice as gentle as I could, but it was difficult for me now.
She stiffened again but slowly raised the bowl in my direction.
I took the bowl from her hand. Our fingers brushed slightly.
That was just a fraction of a second, but I felt that faint and strange sensation again.
Almost imperceptible, but it was real.
It was like something slipped inside my skin, but vanished before I could grasp it.
It only brought an unsettling thought to my mind, but I brushed it off.
But didn’t let that sensation slip away.
I felt them when I pulled her up into my embrace that day. They vanished in the same way that day too, but now was the time to find out why I was on the edge.
I sat down at the edge of the bed beside her knees.
She was now clasping her fingers tightly on her lap, her head still hanging low.
“Is the soup not tasting good?” I asked her, looking at the soup and then back at her.
I needed to talk to Colton about her meals, but not now.
She glanced at me but immediately lowered her eyelashes again.
I tilted my head while waiting for her answer.
She lifted her hands hesitantly and made an okay gesture with her fingers.
“Colton said that you are healing faster than he had anticipated, yet you need to take light meals. Heavy meals can mess with your stomach, and hence, there can be a delay in your recovery,” I spoke calmly while raising a spoonful of soup to her mouth.
She shot up her eyes, widening them in surprise.
I gestured for her to drink.
She blinked a few times, processing what I asked, but slowly opened her mouth. I fed her the spoon gently.
“We didn’t find your phone. So, I asked William to bring a new phone and a new SIM card for you today. He will bring that around lunch.” I told her in the same calm manner, keeping the conversation going.
It was still one-sided, but it was better than thick tension in the room.
She slowly lifted her hands and then drew something on her palm with her finger.
I knitted my brows, not understanding what she wanted to say to me.
She sighed and then drew again.
This time, I paid more attention and understood both letters.
It was TY.
“Thank you?” I asked her while raising my brow slightly.
She immediately nodded in agreement, a faint and innocent smile creeping on her lips.
This was still better than nothing.
Way better than that constant unspeakable tension.
Something tightened in my chest.
If she had so many things to be sure with anyone….
Fenrir was silent, and I didn’t disturb him.
“Do you have any particular hobby that can help you pass your time while recuperating?” I asked her while feeding another spoonful of soup.
Her eyes immediately lit up…
A raw, pure, and genuine reaction.
She immediately closed her hands and then opened them like she was opening the book.
“Books?” I guess, and she immediately bobbed her head furiously, grinning foolishly.
“What kind of books?” I asked her again but continued feeding her.
I didn’t know when I was this relaxed, but this change was freshening.
She gulped down the soup hurriedly and then rolled her eyes as if she were thinking how to answer me.
Then she made a gesture with her index finger and thumb.
A very common gesture for money.
“Finance?” I asked her in surprise, and she once again bobbed her head furiously in the same manner.
I was really surprised.
My timid fiancée was interested in finance?
But it also made me realize how little I knew about her.
“Okay, then I will send you a few books that I have on finance and some other supplies,” I told her, and she gave me that foolish grin that pricked my heart in a very different way.
By now, she had finished her soup, looking genuinely happy.
I put the bowl on the nightstand and gave her some warm water to drink.
She drank obediently.
“Rest for now. I will send you books after I go to my office. William will feed his number, my number, and Colton’s number on your phone. If you need anything, just message William or me. I may not reply instantly, but I will whenever I get the time. If there is an emergency, just dial my number,” I instructed her calmly, and she nodded happily.
I felt a slight tug at the corner of my mouth, but I masked it immediately.
I walked out of the room and was about to close the door completely when I heard something.
“Yessss.”
I narrowed my eyes slightly; the door was still ajar.
Nothing came up again, but I was sure that I heard a very faint, almost a whisper, coming from inside the room.
This was the second time.
One time can be an illusion, but the second time????
Nope…
“Interesting,” Fenrir mumbled in amusement.
“Yeah…. Very.” I replied and closed the door without making a sound because it could alert her if she was the one who spoke that word.
I walked towards the other side of the corridor to go to my office while taking my phone out.
I needed information on my fiancée, but I didn’t want to get anyone’s help here.
It can alert the people who killed those five innocent girls before.
Skye’s biggest advantage was her muteness, which made her unworthy to all the people, but this was the only reason that she was still alive.
Or else they would have killed her too.
I was sure that the second party who paid ransom to those rogues must be the people behind the death of those girls.
“You want to use her as bait to lure them out?” Fenrir asked me, and I took a deep breath.
“Her life is still in danger, and I want to save her. I have to do this.” I replied calmly.
“Then train her first. Let her be strong enough to save herself instead of attempting suicide by jumping off the cliff,” Fenrir demanded.
I pursed my lips but couldn’t deny that he was right.
Skye needed to learn to fight.
“Alpha.” I stopped in my tracks when I heard Thomas, my gamma, calling me.
I waited for him to reach me. He had a serious expression on his face.
“Alpha Winfred is here,” he told me in a grim tone.
My jaw locked, but there was something more than that.
"He brought his younger daughter, Gloria Ashford, too," he added in the same tone.
"They are with your parents, and from what I heard, it seems that they are here to discuss your marriage with Gloria Ashford instead of Luna Skye." My expression darkened immediately.
"How did they get entry?" I answered him coldly.
"It.... it's your mother," he answered cautiously.
I tightened my fists, closed my eyes for a few seconds, and then opened them again.
"Lead the way," I asked him coldly, suppressing my fury, but it was hard to do when it came to a leech like Winfred Ashford, Skye's father, and my mother.
Thomas immediately started walking beside me and took me to the main building.
"They are in the main living room, Alpha," Thomas told me, and I just grunted in response.
"Send three guards to guard my room. Instruct them that no one can enter my room until I order." I instructed him coldly and entered the living room, where I heard Winfred talking to my parents.
