Chapter 15: The Man Behind the Name
The station platform fell into an uneasy silence.
The echo of the gunshot still lingered in the air as Sheriff Brooks and his deputies handcuffed one of the attackers who hadn’t managed to escape.
Lena stood beside the injured stranger she had known as Daniel.
Her hands trembled as she wrapped a clean cloth around the wound on his arm.
“You should be at the clinic,” she whispered.
“I’ll be fine.”
“No,” she said, looking into his eyes. “You’re not.”
For the first time since they had met…
She saw fear in them.
Not fear of the men who had attacked him.
Fear of losing her trust.
⸻
Sheriff Brooks approached, his expression serious.
“I think it’s time someone explained what’s going on.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He had spent weeks hiding behind a borrowed name.
Running.
Lying.
Pretending.
He was tired.
Slowly, he looked at Lena.
“I owe you the truth.”
She remained silent.
He took a deep breath.
“My name…”
“…isn’t Daniel.”
Lena’s heart skipped a beat.
“My real name is Thomas Ashcroft.”
The name hung heavily in the air.
The villagers exchanged confused glances.
But Sheriff Brooks stiffened.
“Ashcroft?”
He stared at the young man.
“As in Ashcroft Group?”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
“I’m Thomas Ashcroft.”
“The grandson of Chairman William Ashcroft…”
“…and the sole heir to Ashcroft Group.”
Silence.
Even the wind seemed to stop.
Lena could hardly believe what she was hearing.
“You…”
Her voice cracked.
“You’re the missing heir they’ve been talking about on the news?”
Thomas lowered his head.
“Yes.”
⸻
For a long moment, Lena couldn’t find the words.
Then the questions came rushing out.
“So… Daniel was never your name?”
“No.”
“You came here under a false identity?”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me from the very beginning?”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Each answer felt like another crack in her heart.
Tears welled in her eyes.
“I opened my home to you.”
“I trusted you.”
“I defended you.”
“And all this time…”
“I didn’t even know your real name.”
Thomas’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“But if I had told you the truth…”
“You would’ve been in danger from the very first day.”
Lena laughed bitterly through her tears.
“I’m in danger anyway.”
His shoulders slumped.
She was right.
⸻
Sheriff Brooks folded his arms.
“Start from the beginning.”
Thomas nodded.
“My grandfather discovered that someone inside Ashcroft Group was working with a powerful criminal organization.”
“They were stealing company secrets, laundering money, and arranging murders to protect their interests.”
“I found evidence that could expose them.”
“The moment they realized I knew the truth…”
“They tried to kill me.”
“So I disappeared.”
“I left everything behind.”
“My name.”
“My life.”
“My family.”
“And I ended up in Maple Creek…”
He looked at Lena.
“…where someone offered a stranger a meal instead of asking questions.”
⸻
Lena’s eyes filled with fresh tears.
“So every smile…”
“Every laugh…”
“Were those lies too?”
Thomas answered without hesitation.
“No.”
“Not one of them.”
“The name Daniel was a lie.”
“My past was a lie.”
“But every moment I spent with you…”
“Every cup of coffee.”
“Every laugh.”
“Every dance.”
“They were real.”
His voice broke.
“You made me forget what it felt like to live in fear.”
“You made me feel like an ordinary man.”
“And I fell in love with you.”
The confession left everyone speechless.
Lena’s breath caught.
He had finally said the words neither of them had dared to speak.
⸻
She looked away, trying to steady herself.
“I don’t know who you are anymore.”
Thomas nodded sadly.
“I know.”
“And I don’t expect you to forgive me today.”
“But everything I feel for you…”
“It’s real.”
A tear rolled down Lena’s cheek.
“I need time.”
She turned and slowly walked away.
Thomas watched her leave, unable to stop her.
For the first time since arriving in Maple Creek…
He truly felt alone.
⸻
That evening, Thomas returned to the small room above Sunflower Café.
The room that had once felt like home now felt unfamiliar.
He placed the black metal box on the table.
With a deep breath, he unlocked it.
Inside were three items.
A thick file stamped CONFIDENTIAL.
An encrypted flash drive.
And a handwritten envelope.
On the front, in elegant handwriting, were the words:
To My Grandson, Thomas. Read Only When You Are Ready.
Thomas stared at the letter, his heart pounding.
Whatever his grandfather had left inside…
Had cost Samuel his life.
And outside, hidden in the darkness across the street, a pair of cold eyes watched the upstairs window of Sunflower Café.
A voice spoke quietly into a phone.
“Target confirmed.”
“Thomas Ashcroft has revealed himself.”
The reply came instantly.
“Good.”
“Tell the others…”
“…the hunt is over.”
Thomas had finally stopped running.
But he had no idea that revealing his true identity had placed everyone he cared about—especially Lena—in greater danger than ever before.
