Chapter 8: The Festival Begins
The sun rose over Maple Creek Village, bathing the streets in a warm golden glow.
Today was the Harvest Festival.
Colorful ribbons fluttered from every lamp post, children ran through the square wearing flower crowns, and the cheerful sound of music drifted through the crisp morning air.
For the villagers, it was the happiest day of the year.
For Sunflower Café…
It was the busiest.
⸻
Lena pushed open the café door before sunrise.
“We’re going to need every minute we have.”
Daniel followed her inside, carrying two baskets of fresh apples.
“I’ve never seen anyone this excited to work.”
She grinned.
“Ask me again tonight.”
Together, they threw themselves into the morning rush.
Fresh bread came out of the oven.
Cinnamon rolls filled the room with their sweet aroma.
Coffee brewed nonstop as customers lined up outside before the café had even officially opened.
⸻
“Daniel!” Lena called from the kitchen.
“I need more strawberries!”
“They’re already washed.”
“What about the cream?”
“In the refrigerator.”
“The pie boxes?”
“Stacked by the door.”
Lena paused.
She smiled to herself.
Only a week ago, he didn’t know how to carry a tray.
Now…
He knew exactly where everything belonged.
“You’ve become pretty useful.”
Daniel looked at her with mock pride.
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“You should.”
⸻
By noon, the festival was in full swing.
The village square overflowed with music, laughter, and the smell of grilled food.
Sunflower Café had set up a small outdoor stall filled with pastries and fresh lemonade.
Children pointed excitedly at the colorful cupcakes decorated with tiny sunflower petals.
“Miss Lena!” a little boy called.
“I want the biggest cookie!”
She laughed.
“The biggest one?”
He nodded eagerly.
Daniel leaned over and whispered, “He’s been saying that to every bakery.”
Lena tried not to laugh.
“Then I suppose we’ll have to make ours the best.”
The boy beamed as Daniel handed him a giant chocolate chip cookie.
⸻
As the afternoon wore on, the crowd grew larger.
An elderly musician began playing the violin in the center of the square.
Couples danced.
Children clapped to the rhythm.
The entire village seemed wrapped in happiness.
Lena watched the scene with a smile.
“I love this festival.”
Daniel stood beside her.
“I can see why.”
“It’s not about the decorations.”
“It’s about everyone feeling like family.”
Daniel looked around.
For the first time in years…
He understood what she meant.
⸻
Just then, the village mayor stepped onto the small stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen!”
“It’s time for our annual Harvest Festival raffle!”
The crowd cheered.
“The grand prize this year…”
He pulled a card from a wooden box.
“…is a weekend getaway to Silver Lake!”
Everyone applauded.
The mayor reached into the box once more.
“And our lucky winner is…”
He unfolded the paper.
“…Lena Hart!”
The crowd erupted in cheers.
Lena’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Mrs. Parker laughed.
“You finally won!”
Embarrassed, Lena walked onto the stage to accept the prize.
The mayor handed her the envelope with a warm smile.
“Congratulations.”
As she thanked everyone, Daniel watched from the edge of the crowd.
She looked radiant beneath the afternoon sun.
Without realizing it…
He smiled.
⸻
But not everyone in the square was celebrating.
Across the street, a man wearing a dark baseball cap stood beside a black SUV.
He lowered a pair of binoculars.
“There he is.”
He reached into his pocket and made a phone call.
“We’ve found him.”
His eyes never left Daniel.
“He’s in Maple Creek Village…”
“…working at a place called Sunflower Café.”
The line went silent.
Then came a single reply.
“Do not lose sight of him.”
The man slipped the phone back into his pocket.
Hidden among the cheerful festival crowd…
The hunt had officially begun.
