Chapter 9: The Dance Under the Lanterns The Harvest Festival came alive as evening settled over Maple Creek Village. Hundreds of lanterns glowed softly above the square, casting golden light over smiling faces. Music floated through the cool night air while children laughed, couples danced, and friends gathered around long wooden tables filled with homemade food. Sunflower Café had finally sold its last cinnamon roll. Lena let out a tired sigh as she untied her apron. “We did it.” Daniel placed the empty tray on the counter. “We sold everything.” She grinned. “I told you this festival was important.” “And I believed you… eventually.” She laughed. “You’ll fit into village life after all.” ⸻ Outside, the mayor climbed onto the stage once again. “Attention, everyone!” The crowd gradually fell silent. “As tradition demands…” He smiled warmly. “…it’s time for the Lantern Dance!” Cheers erupted across the square. Daniel looked at Lena. “What’s the Lantern Dance?” She smiled. “It’s the oldest tradition in Maple Creek.” “Every year, friends, families, and couples dance together to celebrate another season of hope.” Daniel glanced at the growing crowd. “I don’t dance.” Lena folded her arms. “You also said you’d never carry coffee trays.” “…Fair point.” ⸻ Before Daniel could think of another excuse, Mrs. Parker appeared beside them with a mischievous smile. “Lena.” “Yes, Mrs. Parker?” “Why is your young man standing over here all alone?” Lena nearly dropped the cloth she was holding. “H-He isn’t my—” Mrs. Parker winked. “Then ask him before someone else does.” The elderly woman walked away before Lena could respond. Daniel raised an eyebrow. “Your young man?” Lena groaned. “Don’t encourage her.” ⸻ The music changed to a slow, gentle melody. One by one, people stepped onto the dance floor. Lena looked at Daniel. “Would you like to dance?” He hesitated. “I really don’t know how.” “Neither did you know how to peel potatoes.” “I survived.” “And you’ll survive this too.” She held out her hand. Daniel stared at it for a long moment. Then… He placed his hand in hers. ⸻ They stepped into the center of the square. Lanterns swayed gently overhead. The violinist began to play. Lena guided him through the first few steps. “Left.” “Now right.” “Don’t look at your feet.” “I’m trying not to step on yours.” She laughed. “You’ve already stepped on them twice.” “I was hoping you hadn’t noticed.” “Oh, I noticed.” Despite himself… Daniel laughed too. A real laugh. The kind he hadn’t shared in years. Around them, the villagers smiled. Even Mrs. Parker quietly whispered to another woman, “They look perfect together.” ⸻ As the music slowed, Daniel looked at Lena. She looked beautiful beneath the lantern light. For a moment… The noise around them disappeared. There was only her. Only this dance. Only this peaceful village. He almost forgot the world waiting beyond Maple Creek. Almost. ⸻ At the edge of the festival, a black SUV remained parked beneath the shadows of an old oak tree. Inside, the man in the baseball cap lowered his camera. Click. Another photograph. Daniel and Lena dancing. He attached the image to an encrypted message. Target confirmed. Companion identified. A reply came almost immediately. Do not approach. Watch the girl. The man frowned. The girl? Another message appeared. She may become our leverage. He looked back toward the dance floor. His gaze settled on Lena. A cold smile spread across his face. “Poor girl…” “…you have no idea who you’ve just fallen for.” Far away, inside the Ashcroft Estate, Chairman Ashcroft stood in his private study, staring at a framed photograph of a much younger Daniel. His loyal butler entered quietly. “Sir…” “We’ve received new information.” The old man’s eyes lifted. “They’ve found him.” A mixture of relief and fear crossed his face. “Then pray…” he whispered. “…that our enemies haven’t found him first.” Outside, the festival continued beneath the glowing lanterns. Lena and Daniel smiled, completely unaware that the happiest night of their new life together had already marked the beginning of a far more dangerous chapter.
