Chapter 11: Into the Flames
The thick column of black smoke rose into the clear afternoon sky.
Villagers rushed out of their homes, pointing toward the distant country road.
“What happened?”
“Was that an explosion?”
Lena watched Daniel sprint toward the smoke without hesitation.
“Daniel!”
He didn’t stop.
She took off after him.
“Daniel, wait!”
⸻
By the time they reached the scene, several villagers had already gathered.
A black sedan had crashed into a large oak tree.
The front of the car was engulfed in flames.
People shouted for water.
Someone called the village clinic.
Daniel froze.
His eyes immediately recognized the vehicle.
Samuel’s car.
“No…”
Without thinking, he ran toward the burning wreck.
“Daniel!” Lena screamed.
“The car’s going to explode!”
He ignored her.
A farmer grabbed his arm.
“Young man, don’t!”
Daniel pulled free.
“There’s still someone inside!”
The heat burned against his skin as he reached the driver’s door.
It wouldn’t open.
He grabbed a large rock from the roadside and smashed the window.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The glass finally shattered.
Ignoring the flames licking at the edges of the seat, Daniel reached inside and unfastened Samuel’s seatbelt.
The elderly man was unconscious, blood running down the side of his face.
Daniel pulled with all his strength.
Just as Samuel fell into his arms—
BOOM!
The engine exploded.
The force threw both men onto the grass.
Lena gasped.
For a moment…
Everything went silent.
⸻
Daniel slowly opened his eyes.
His ears rang.
His arms were covered in small cuts from the broken glass.
But he didn’t care.
He turned to Samuel.
“Samuel!”
The old man coughed weakly.
His eyes fluttered open.
“You… shouldn’t have come back…”
Daniel knelt beside him.
“Save your strength.”
Samuel grabbed his wrist with surprising force.
“They’re… here…”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who?”
Samuel struggled to breathe.
“The people… chasing you…”
His voice became weaker.
“They’ll use…”
His gaze shifted toward Lena, who was hurrying toward them.
“…the girl…”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
Samuel pressed something into Daniel’s hand.
A small silver key.
“The locker…”
“Station…”
Before he could finish—
His hand fell limp.
The village doctor rushed forward.
“Move back!”
He quickly checked Samuel’s pulse.
After a long moment…
He looked up sadly.
“I’m sorry…”
“He didn’t make it.”
Silence swept over the crowd.
Daniel lowered his head.
His grip tightened around the silver key hidden in his palm.
He had lost one of the few people he could still trust.
⸻
Lena walked over quietly.
She noticed the grief in Daniel’s eyes.
Without saying a word…
She placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
“I’m so sorry.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He hadn’t realized how much he needed someone beside him.
⸻
Several meters away…
Hidden behind the trees…
The man in the baseball cap lowered his binoculars.
He smiled coldly.
“Mission accomplished.”
He picked up his phone.
“The messenger is dead.”
A voice answered from the other end.
“And Daniel?”
“He’s still in Maple Creek.”
The voice paused.
“Good.”
“Phase Two begins tonight.”
The call ended.
The man looked once more toward Sunflower Café.
Then he disappeared into the forest.
⸻
As the villagers slowly returned home, the cheerful spirit of the Harvest Festival was gone.
An uneasy feeling settled over Maple Creek.
That night, Daniel stood alone outside Sunflower Café.
He opened his hand and stared at the small silver key Samuel had died protecting.
On one side was a tiny engraving:
Locker 27.
Daniel whispered to himself,
“What did you leave for me, Samuel?”
From the upstairs window, Lena watched him in silence.
She knew he was carrying a burden far heavier than he had ever admitted.
And she made a quiet promise to herself.
No matter what secret Daniel was hiding…
She wouldn’t let him face it alone.
