Chapter 1: The First Encounter Alina never believed in love at first sight, but that was before she met Damian Blackwood. It had started like any ordinary evening. She was attending a charity gala, forced to dress in a gown that felt too tight and heels that made her question every life decision she had ever made. As the assistant to one of the event’s organizers, she wasn’t meant to be noticed—just another shadow in the crowd, ensuring everything ran smoothly. But from the moment she stepped into the grand ballroom, she felt an inexplicable shift in the air. And then she saw him. Damian Blackwood. He stood on the other side of the room, effortlessly commanding attention. Tall, broad-shouldered, and devastatingly handsome, he was the kind of man who could silence a room with a single glance. His tailored black suit accentuated his chiseled features, and his stormy gray eyes scanned the crowd with a sharp, assessing gaze. There was an air of danger around him, a presence so intense it sent shivers down Alina’s spine. Her pulse quickened as their eyes met across the room. He tilted his head slightly, as if intrigued by her presence. Alina swallowed hard, tearing her gaze away. She had no business staring at a man like him. He was out of her league—out of anyone’s league. He was the kind of man women lost themselves in, the kind that left destruction in his wake. And yet, she couldn’t ignore the magnetic pull between them. As the evening wore on, she did her best to avoid looking in his direction, but she could feel his gaze burning into her. Every time she dared glance his way, he was already watching her. It was unnerving, thrilling, and entirely too intoxicating. “Alina,” a voice snapped her out of her daze. It was her boss, Marianne. “Table seven needs another bottle of champagne. Can you handle that?” “Of course,” Alina replied, grateful for the distraction. She made her way toward the bar, weaving through the crowd, but as she reached for a bottle, a deep, velvety voice sent a chill down her spine. “You’re very good at avoiding people, aren’t you?” She turned sharply, her breath catching as she came face to face with Damian Blackwood himself. Up close, he was even more devastating. His presence was overwhelming, his cologne a heady mix of spice and something dangerously alluring. “I wasn’t avoiding anyone,” she said, surprised by the steadiness of her voice. His lips curved into a slow, knowing smile. “Lying doesn’t suit you.” Alina’s heart pounded. He was too close, too intense, and she needed to get away before she lost herself in those piercing gray eyes. “I have work to do,” she said, stepping back, but his hand caught hers gently. “One dance,” he murmured. It wasn’t a question. She hesitated. Everything in her screamed to walk away, to run. But there was something in his eyes—something dark, something irresistible—that held her in place. “Just one,” she whispered, and he led her onto the dance floor. The moment his hand touched her waist, a fire ignited within her. He moved with effortless grace, his grip firm yet careful, as if he was holding something precious. The air around them crackled with tension, and for the first time in her life, Alina felt completely and utterly consumed. “Tell me your name,” he said softly, his lips brushing against her ear. “Alina.” “Beautiful.” Her breath hitched. She should have pulled away, should have put distance between them, but she couldn’t. He was a storm, and she was caught in the eye of it. As the song ended, he didn’t let go. His fingers tightened slightly around hers, his eyes burning into her. “I want to see you again.” Alina knew this was dangerous. A man like Damian Blackwood didn’t simply want—he took. And yet, against all reason, she found herself nodding. “Tomorrow,” he said. “Seven o’clock. I’ll send a car.” Before she could respond, he lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a lingering kiss against her skin. Her entire body shivered at the contact, and when he finally released her, she felt as though the ground beneath her had disappeared. He turned and walked away, leaving her breathless, shaken, and completely unraveled. Alina had always thought love at first sight was a fairytale. But maybe… just maybe… it was real. And maybe, just maybe, it was the most dangerous thing of all. She exhaled shakily, forcing herself to move. The gala continued around her, people laughing, glasses clinking, conversations flowing, but it all felt muted. As if she had stepped into another world the moment Damian had touched her. Jessica, her best friend and co-worker, appeared at her side, eyes wide. “What the hell was that?” she hissed. Alina blinked, trying to steady herself. “What?” Jessica grabbed her arm. “Don’t ‘what’ me! That was Damian Blackwood! The Damian Blackwood. And he just looked at you like you were the only woman in the room.” Alina swallowed hard. “It’s nothing, Jess. Just a dance.” Jessica arched a brow. “Yeah? And did your soul leave your body too? Because that’s what it looked like from here.” Alina shook her head, willing her heartbeat to slow. “I need to get back to work.” Jessica wasn’t convinced. “Fine. But you better tell me everything later.” Alina forced a smile and turned back to her tasks, but no matter how much she tried to focus, her thoughts kept drifting ba ck to one thing. Damian Blackwood. And the dangerous game she had just stepped into.
