Chapter 12 Put her Down

620 Words
“Amelia, please, jump down. I beg you.” Lucas's words echoed in my mind, and in that moment, I knew he was right. Without much hesitation, I mustered all my strength, climbed to the window, and finally jumped. The next few minutes were a blur, and when I regained consciousness, my body ached all over.   ‘Lucas," I said weakly. My right hand going to my upper abdomen, and my eyes fixated on it. "Is the baby okay?”   Lucas stopped performing CPR and his ecstatic expression faltering as he looked at me. Hearing my question, he looked at my belly and his smile disappeared. I excruciating pain shot through my abdomen. Desperate for reassurance, I reached out to touch Lucas, only to find that my palms were all covered in blood.   I forced a smile and urged him, “Lucas, the baby okay, right?” No response. “Help me up, I don't feel much pain. So, the baby must be fine. Please, Lucas, help me up now.”   As I struggled to stand up, he hugged me tightly. I continued pleading, “You must trust me, the baby will be okay. Help me get up, please.”   “Amy,” he said with a tremor in his voice, “Be quiet. Don't move. The ambulance will come soon.”   His words made me feel cold like I was in an icehouse. At that second, I felt as though I had lost all sense of reality. I was like a broken puppet without a soul. I refused to entertain the dark thought that crept into my mind, and the pain in my body seemed to fade away.   “Amy, don't think like that. The baby may be fine. I'll take you to the hospital,” Lucas repeated, gently picking me up. My mind slowly began to grasp what he was saying, but tears welled up in my eyes. I looked at him and whispered, “My baby will be fine. It must be fine.”   Just then, a cold voice cut through the air, and I turned to see Sebastian standing not far away. Dressed in black against a backdrop of flames, he spoke with a hint of contempt as he stepped closer, “You left me because of this man? The baby is his, right?”   I didn’t hear what he was saying next. He came here to save me, but merely looking at his face and his mouth makes me feel scared and cold. Suddenly his face was closer to mine, and I closed my eyes and tried to shut everything out. Exhausted, I held on to Lucas's shirt tightly and managed to say, “My baby."   “Doctor, how does it feel to hold my wife?” Sebastian looked at Lucas coldly with a fake smile on his face. Lucas was always kind to everyone, like a round jade under the yellow light. But right now he responded coldly, “Sebastian, Amy needs to go to the hospital now.”   “Amy?” Sebastian mumbled the words, a chilling smile playing on his lips as he looked at Lucas. “Doctor, is it a habit for you to refer to another man's wife by nicknames? ” Lucas's eyes also turned colder as he spoke, “Amy is pregnant with your child, and now she's showing signs of a miscarriage.”   Sebastian's gaze shifted to my stained clothes, and he sneered, “So?”   With nothing more to say to this man, Lucas held me tightly and turned to leave, but Sebastian blocked the path and demanded, “Put her down.”   Lucas didn't respond or give Sebastian a second glance. He simply continued walking forward.
