MILES APART HEARTS TOGETHER

800 Words
The morning of Ethan's departure arrived far sooner than either of them had expected. The airport was filled with the sounds of rolling suitcases, boarding announcements, and families saying their goodbyes. People hurried from one gate to another, but for Lily and Ethan, it felt as though time had slowed to a crawl. Lily stood beside him, her fingers tightly wrapped around his hand. Around her neck hung the silver raindrop necklace Ethan had given her only days before. She touched it absentmindedly, reminding herself that this wasn't the end of their story. Ethan looked at her and smiled, though there was sadness hidden behind it. "I still can't believe this day is here." Lily forced a small smile. "I've been pretending it wasn't." He chuckled softly. "That sounds like something you'd do." She looked down at the floor. "I'm afraid." "So am I." The honesty in his voice made her eyes sting with tears. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. They simply stood together, trying to memorize every detail of each other's faces. The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal. Passengers for Ethan's flight were invited to proceed to the gate. Lily closed her eyes. "I hate that announcement." "I do too." He gently lifted her chin. "Listen to me." She nodded. "This isn't goodbye." "It's just... see you later." "No matter how many miles separate us, you're still the person I want to tell everything to." A tear rolled down Lily's cheek. "You promise?" "I promise." She smiled through her tears. "Then I'll hold you to it." Ethan pulled her into a tight embrace. "I love you." "I love you more." "I don't think that's possible." "We'll argue about it when you come home." He laughed. "It's a date." Reluctantly, he picked up his suitcase. He took a few steps toward the security gate before turning around. Lily was still standing exactly where he had left her. She raised her hand and waved. He waved back. Then he disappeared into the crowd. --- The first few days were harder than either of them expected. The seven-hour time difference meant one of them was usually awake while the other was asleep. Still, they refused to let distance win. Every morning, Lily woke up to a goodnight message from Ethan. Every evening, Ethan received a photo of Lily's day. Sometimes it was the café where they had shared countless conversations. Sometimes it was the river at sunset. Sometimes it was simply a picture of the page she had written that afternoon. One evening, Ethan called her while walking across the university campus. "You won't believe this," he said excitedly. "What happened?" "I accidentally joined the wrong classroom." Lily laughed. "How?" "I was half asleep." "What class was it?" "Advanced French." She burst into laughter. "You don't even speak French." "Exactly." "So what did you do?" "I stayed for twenty minutes because I was too embarrassed to leave." Lily laughed so hard that tears filled her eyes. "I wish I could've seen your face." "It was probably the most confused face in the room." Their laughter erased the distance, if only for a few minutes. --- Weeks turned into months. Lily continued writing her novel. Ethan threw himself into his studies. Whenever either of them felt discouraged, the other was there with words of encouragement. One rainy evening, Lily sat by her bedroom window, staring at the empty street below. She missed him more than she wanted to admit. Her phone vibrated. It was a video call. Ethan appeared on the screen wearing a thick winter coat. "It's snowing!" he said, turning the camera toward the white-covered campus. Lily's eyes widened. "I've never seen snow before." "I knew you'd want to." He stretched out his hand and caught a snowflake. "It melts almost immediately." "It's beautiful." "It would be even better if you were here." She smiled sadly. "One day." "One day." After the call ended, Lily opened the envelope Ethan had left for her before he departed. Inside was a single handwritten note. No matter how long this journey feels, remember one thing: every day apart is one day closer to coming home. Keep writing. Keep believing. Keep smiling. I'll be cheering for you from wherever I am. I love you. Always. Ethan. Lily carefully folded the letter and placed it inside her notebook beside the first chapter of her novel. Outside, rain tapped gently against the window, just as it had on the day they first met. She smiled. Their story had begun with rain. Now, it was being carried across oceans by hope, trust, and love. Neither Lily nor Ethan knew what the future held. But they both knew one thing with certainty. Some hearts never drift apart, no matter how many miles stand between them.
