The following week felt different.
Not because anything had changed between Lily and Ethan.
Because everything had.
They still met at the café after work and the library. They still teased each other over coffee and argued about books. They still took long walks through the park.
But now, whenever their hands accidentally touched, neither of them pretended it meant nothing.
One Friday afternoon, Lily arrived at the café carrying her notebook.
Ethan noticed it immediately.
"You're smiling."
"I finished the first three chapters."
His face lit up.
"You did?"
She nodded proudly.
"I almost gave up halfway through, but then I remembered my promise."
"I knew you could do it."
She handed him the notebook.
"I want you to read it."
His eyes widened.
"Are you sure?"
"I've never let anyone read my writing before."
"I'll take good care of it."
That evening, Ethan stayed awake long after midnight.
He read every page carefully.
He laughed at the funny moments.
He smiled at the hopeful ones.
By the final chapter, he realized something.
Lily wasn't just writing a story.
She was writing pieces of her own heart.
The next morning, he met her at the riverside.
She looked nervous.
"Well?"
He closed the notebook.
"Lily..."
Her heart pounded.
"...it's beautiful."
She blinked.
"You really mean that?"
"I do."
He stepped closer.
"You have a gift."
She let out a relieved laugh.
"I was terrified you'd hate it."
"I could never hate something that means this much to you."
A gentle breeze stirred the trees around them.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Ethan took a deep breath.
"I need to tell you something."
Lily's heartbeat quickened.
"What is it?"
He looked into her eyes.
"Since the day we met in the rain..."
He smiled nervously.
"...I've looked forward to every conversation, every walk, every cup of coffee."
Lily felt her breath catch.
"You've become the best part of my day."
He hesitated for only a second.
"I love you, Lily."
Time seemed to stop.
The river flowed quietly beside them.
Birds sang in the distance.
Yet Lily heard only those three words.
She smiled through tears she hadn't realized were forming.
"I was beginning to think I'd have to say it first."
Ethan laughed softly.
"So..."
She stepped closer until only a few inches separated them.
"I love you too."
Before either of them could lose their courage, Ethan gently cupped her face.
"May I?"
Lily nodded.
He leaned forward and kissed her softly.
It was gentle.
Careful.
Filled with all the feelings they had struggled to put into words.
When they finally pulled apart, Lily rested her forehead against his.
"So," she whispered with a smile, "does this make us an official couple?"
"I was hoping it would."
"Good."
She slipped her hand into his.
"Because I already planned our next coffee date."
Ethan laughed.
"I should have known."
"You'll learn something about me."
"What's that?"
"I always have a plan."
They walked along the river together, hand in hand, smiling at nothing in particular.
Neither of them noticed the email waiting in Ethan's inbox.
An email that would arrive later that evening.
One that could change everything they had just found.
Sometimes happiness arrives quietly.
Sometimes, it is tested just as quickly.
